My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. My mom ran a tiny shop at a flea market near my school and collected second-hands to sell for the money we needed.
Once during elementary
school, it was a field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me? There were so
many people around! After throwing her a hateful look, I ignored her and ran out. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me “Your mom only has one eye?" and they taunted (奚落) me.
I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. I said sharply to my mom, "Why donˈt you have the other eye?! If youˈre only gonna make me a
laughingstock(笑柄), why donˈt you just disappear? “My mom did not respond. I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, it felt so good to have said what I wanted to say out of
anger. Maybe it was because my mom hadnˈt punished me, but I didnˈt think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.
All I was thinking was to get away from my one-eye mom and our desperate
poverty. I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Finally to my great satisfaction, I got accepted by the Seoul University which I had been longing for.
Then I got married there. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. I enjoy the life there because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door. It was my mom! When she stood by the door. My little son ran away, scared of my mom’s eye and my daughter screamed. I yelled at her for coming over uninvited, “Who are you? I don’t know you! How dare you come to my house and scare my children!”
