I have a neighbour we call"Happy".I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a bad word to anyone or about anyone.
Happy and her husband Ben,70,have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it.Most of the neighbours watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben's beans,we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market,Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard.
Last month,Happy and Ben invited most of the neighbours over for an"all-day food fest(聚会)".We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn't know what was about to take place.

By Charles Dickens One Christmas Eve,old Scrooge and Bob were working busily in his office. It was a cold, foggy day.The fog was so thick that the houses opposite were like ghosts. It was only three o'clock in the afternoon, but it was already quite dark.
              "Merry Christmas,Uncle!"cried a happy voice.It was Scrooge's nephew(侄子).
              "Bah!"said Scrooge,"Humbug(骗人的话)!"
"Christmas is a humbug?Surely you don't mean that,Uncle."said his nephew.
              "I do,"said Scrooge."Merry Christmas!What reason have you got to be merry?You're poor."
"OK,then,"replied the nephew cheerfully."What reason have you got to be sad?You are rich.Don't be angry,Uncle!"said his nephew.
"What else can I be?"answered the uncle,"I live in a world of fools!Merry Christmas! What's Christmas time to you? It's a time for paying bills without money?!It's a time for finding yourself a year older, but not richer.
Everyone who goes around saying‘Merry Christmas'should have his tongue cut out.Yes,he should!"
"Uncle! Please don't say that!"said the nephew."I've always thought of Christmas time as a good time,a
kind, and a charitable(慈善的)and happy time. And so,Uncle,Christmas has never put any gold or silver in my pocket, but I think it has done me good. And it will do me good.I'm sure."
Bob,standing in the corner of the room, applauded. He realized his mistake very soon, and went quickly
back to his work, but Scrooge had heard him.
"One more sound from you,Bob Cratchit,"said Scrooge,"and you'll celebrate Christmas by losing your job!"
"Don't be angry with him,Uncle.Come and have dinner with us tomorrow."said Scrooge's newphew.
              "No."said Scrooge.
              I'm sorry you don't want to celebrate Christmas.But I do.So a Merry Christmas,Uncle!"
              "Good afternoon!"said Scrooge.
"And a Happy New Year!"said his nephew.
              "Good afternoon!"said Scrooge again.
His nephew left the room.He stopped to wish Bob a Merry Christmas. And Bob replied,"A Merry

Death Valley, one of America's great national parks,is a place of stiange and silent heauty. As beautiful as this place is, its name provides evidence(迹象)of very real danger. Death Valley is a land of beautiful yet dangerous extremes. There are mountains that reach more than 3,000meters into the sky. "There is a place called Badwater that is the lowest area of land in the Western Hemisphere. If there were water there,it would be 86meters below the level of the ocean.
Death Valley can be dangerously cold during the winter months. Storms in the mountains can produce sudden flooding on the floor of the Valley. The air temperature during the summer has been as high as 57℃. The sun can heat the ground so that the temperature of the rocks and soil can be as high as 74℃. The extreme heat of Death Valley has ever killed people. It will continue to kill those who do not honor this extreme climate. Death Valley does not forgive those who are not careful.
Death Valley is a good example of the violence(暴力)of nature. It contains evidence of several ancient volcanoes that caused huge explosions. Evidence of one of these explosions is called Ubehebe Crater. The explosion left a huge hole in the ground almost a kilometer and a half wide.
In many areas of Death Valley it is easy to see where the ground has been pushed up strongly by movement deep in the Earth. This movement has created unusual and beautiful rock formations. Some are red. Others are dark brown, gray, yellow or black. Other areas of rock look as if some huge creature heavily broke and twisted the Earth to create unusual, sometimes frightening shapes.
In other parts of Death Valley there are lines in the rock that show clearly that this area was deep under an ocean for many thousands of years. Much of the、alley is flat and very dry. In fact, scientists believe it is the driest place in the United States.

①Do you know any 9-year-olds who have started their own museums? When Theodore Roosevelt was only nine, he and two of his cousins opened the "Roosevelt Museum of Natural History". The museum was in his bedroom. It had a total of 12specimen(s标本). On display were a few seashells, some dead insects, and some birds' nests. Young Roosevelt took great pride in his small museum.
