Waste can be seen everywhere in the school. Some students ask for more food than they can eat and others often forget to turn off the lights when they leave the classroom. They say they can afford these things. But I don’t agree with them.

Waste can bring a lot of problems. Although China is rich in some resources(资源), we are short of others, for example, fresh water. It is reported that we will have no coal(煤) or oil to use in 100 years. So if we go on wasting our resources, what can we use in the future and where can we move? Think about it. I think we should say no to the students who waste things every day. Everybody should stop wasting as soon as possible.

In our everyday life, we can do many things to prevent waste from happening, for example, turn off the water taps when we finish washing, turn off the lights when we leave the classroom, try not to order more food than we need, and so on. Little by little, everything will be changed. Waste can be stopped one day, if we do our best.

You may not realize it,but you are doing much more than just studying when you are at school.School is also the place where you learn to get on well with people. But this is not always easy. What can you do if you just don’t like one of your classmates?
If you discover that you have problems getting on with your classmates or friends, the most important thing to learn is tolerance.Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect the differences in others. We can not change the way that other people do,so it is important to learn to live happily with them.
Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other.Getting to know someone may help you understand why they do things differently.Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad.Tolerance teaches us to keep atemperate and open mind.
You need to remember an old saying,“Treat others how you want to be treated”.If you tolerate something,it does not mean that you have to like it.No one is asking you to change who you are or what you believe in.Tolerance just means that you should respect the differences in others and not try to make them change.
It is important to practice tolerance, because it will make everyone’s life easier.Learn to accept people for their different abilities and interests. The world is very different, and practicing tolerance in your own school and city can help make a difference.

What can you think of when we talk about elephants? Maybe most of us just know they are the largest animals on land. But-I think there are many other things you should know. For a long time, they are very helpful. They carry big trees, take people from place to place, and are even used in wars. Some people think it's not easy to hurt an elephant because its skin is thick and hard. In fact, that's wrong. Sometimes, a needle (针) can also be very dangerous for the elephant.

People say elephants are afraid of mice. This is wrong, too. In fact, elephants have very poor eyesight, so they usually can't see a mouse even if one comes very close to them. If a person has a good memory, people will say that he has an elephant memory. However, up to now, no study shows that elephants have a better memory than any other animal.

People also believe that when it is time for elephants to die, they will hide themselves in a so-called "elephant graveyard". Often, hunters try to find such places to get ivories, but few people really find places like that. In fact, when elephants are old or get sick, they will stay in deep and secret caves (洞穴) until they get better or die.

              (1) Elephants can help people a lot EXCEPT (除了) ________ .

              A. to carry heavy trees

              D. to help people fight in the war

              (2) Why do some people think it isn't easy to hurt an elephant?

              A. Because the elephant is too big.
              B. Because its skin is thick and hard.

              C. Because the elephant can kill people.
              D. Because people can't get close to it.

              (3) What is the possible meaning of the underlined word "graveyard" ?

              A. A place where elephants are safe.

Could the students from less developed areas in central and western China get the same educational chances as those in big cities in the east? Could the children in poor rural (农村) areas develop as well as those in rich cities? Maybe the answers were “No” in the past. But now, China is trying to change the situation.

In order to help rural students grow taller and stronger. China’s Nutrition(营养)Improvement Program started in 2011. According to the program, a lot more money was spent improving students’ meals. More than 36 million students from 134,000 primary and junior high schools in poor rural areas have benefited from the program. They are provided with healthy food like eggs and milk from Monday to Friday at school. And the result of a survey shows that the students in those areas are much taller and stronger than before.

It is true that there were differences between less developed areas and developed areas in education before. Recently, The Guideline for Popularizing High School Education(2017-2020)has come out. According to the guideline, above 90%students from all over the country will go to high schools by 2020. What’s more, the schools in central and western areas will get more support to improve their education.

Students from rural and poor areas also get more chances to receive higher education. A special college program makes it possible for more students from those areas to go to key (重点的) colleges and universities. The number will be increased by 10%in 2017.

Many people like reading books because it is a good way to pick up new vocabularies ,see grammar in action and develop your understanding of a language.

The key to success is choosing the right book for yourself.

For beginners, I would recommend starting with something short and simple. Chi-ldren’s books are a great place to start .Dr Seuss’s books can make you laugh. Dr Seuss writes his books in rhyme(韵文)and they are all very funny—The cat in the Hat is probably his most well—known book. Starting with something like this means you are easier to finish the book and want to read more.

For more advanced learners, you could try The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien. The book isn’t too long and if you’ve seen the film, it may be easier to follow.

If you’re not quite ready to read a full book, why not try Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes? This book contains lots of short stories, all written in rhyme. Or ,try a very short story book—like one from Roger Hargreaves’s Mr Men and Little Miss series. Although they are intended for young children, they are a good way to pick up some more basic vocabularies.
