The romance novel Me Before You tells a story that you might never forget. It is the latest bestseller by British writer Jojo Moyes. The book has been made into a movie. British actress Emilia Clark and actor Sam Caflin play the lead roles in the movie.

There are two main characters in this book. One is Louisa Clark, or Lou, a girl who has lost her job at a cafe. The other is William Traynor, or Will, a young man who has become disabled after a motorcycle accident.

Lou ends up taking a job where she has to take care of Will. At first, they donˈt like each other very much. However, they gradually become good friends. But this happiness only lasts a few days.

While I read the book, I couldnˈt help but notice its language. There were a lot of descriptions to show what the characters are feeling. There are also many detailed descriptions of the environments around the characters. For example, Moyes writes "I saw it was bigger than I had imagined, red brick with a double front…",describing how surprised Lou is when she sees Willˈs house for the first time.

At the end of the book, Will writes "Just live well, just live" in a letter. This short line is the last thing that Will writes to Lou. It shows Willˈs deep feelings about life. He wants her to live life to the utmost(竭尽全力)-the very thing he had wanted to do before he had his accident.

To our dearest students from Grade Nine,
Three months later you will have the high school entrance exam. Before you take the exam there is something very important for you to know:
This exam does not show all of what makes each of you excellent and unique. The people who score(给分) this exam don't know that some of you love to sing, are good at drawing or can teach others how to use a computer program. They have not seen the way that some of you can dance beautifully or speak confidently to a large group. They do not know that your friends trust you and come to you when they are sad. They do not know that you take part in sports, help your mom and dad or play with your little brother, sister or cousins. They do not know that you do your best, beause these things cannot be tested.
The scores you get from this exam will tell you how you did on that day, but they will not tell you everything. They can't tell you that you have improved on something that you once found difficult. They can't tell you that you brighten up (放晴) your teacher's day. They can't tell you how special you are. So come to school ready to do your best for the exam and remember there is no one way to "test" all of the wonderful things that make you, YOU!
              Kind regards
All your teachers in Grade Nine

              (1) This letter is written to ______ .

              D. in high school
              (3) The teachers wrote this letter in order to ______ .

              C. ask the students to get ready for the high school entrance exam

A public primary school in the USA has stopped giving its students' homework.
Principal Jane Hsu wrote a letter to parents last month, explaining that after more than a year
of analyzing (分析) studies, the school had decided that students' after-school time would be better spent on activities like reading at their own pace (步伐) and playing instead of working on homework.
Hsu's letter says that many studies show that there is no connection between homework and academic (学业的) success. Some other studies also show that the connection between homework and success is dubious at the primary school level.
Harris Cooper, a social psychologist who researches education, found that doing homework makes students perform better in school as they grew older. In later grades, students who did homework performed increasingly better than students who did not. In 2006, Cooper published a study that analyzed 15years' worth of data on the influence of homework. He found that homework had a good influence on students as they aged.
Some parents are not happy with the decision to give up homework. "I think they should have homework. I want my daughter to have fun, but I also want her to be working towards a goal," Daniel Tasman, the father of a second-grader at the school, said to the reporter.
"Students have to do homework in order to gain. Students have to do homework because they may not be able to understand everything in school," Sharon Blake, a student's grandmother told ABC news.

              (1) Jane Hsu wrote a letter to parents to explain ______ .
              A. how students should read at their own pace
              B. why the school gave up homework recently
              C. what activities students could take at home
              D. how important the homework is for students
              (2) The word " dubious" in Paragraph 3probably means "not ______ ".
              A. real
              B. public
              C. clear
              D. special
              (3) Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? ______
              A. Cooper found homework had a bad effect on students as they aged.
              B. Some parents are worried about their children if there is no homework.
              C. Some students are not happy with the decision to give up school homework.
              D. Daniel Tasman wanted his daughter to have fun instead of working to a goal.

The purpose of students who come to school is to study. But studying needs right ways, or we would waste the time or the money. The followings are ways for studying. The best time for reading is morning. Because in the morning, the air is fresh and our minds are clear. For that reason, we can get good results. When we study we must be patient. If we don't understand a text well, we must read it again. We should not read the next until we have learned the first one well. When we are studying, we must put our hearts into the book. We cannot read absent-mindedly(心不在焉地), or we could get nothing from, the book while we are reading. We must always ask "why".If we can't understand well, write it down and ask our teachers or parents, brothers or friends, in any possible ways. We must know it completely and then our knowledge can be used well. Though there are many ways for studying, however, the above mentioned(提到的) will be helpful if we can keep them in heart.

              (1) Morning is the best time for reading because ______ .

              (3) If we don't understand a text well, ______ .
              A. we should read it again till we understand it
              B. we should copy others' answers
              C. we should give it up and read the next one
              (4) Which of the following is NOT true? ______
              A. The purpose of students who come to school is to study.

I love my laptop computer as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. But I know that there are times when I need to move away from three devices and truly communicate with other.
Once, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule -- no laptops, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in the class, some of them were not happy.
Most students believe that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There's a bit of truth to that. Some students think that I am anti-technology. There's no truth to that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can teach my students well.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly exchange ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for outstanding ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently.
I've been teaching my history class in this way for many years and students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
I'm not saying that I won't ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I'm sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free conversation is just too sweet to give up.
              (1) The writer's rule for his History Matters class is ______ .
              A. discussing historical ideas deeply
              B. studying and discussing the materials
              C. leaving technology out of the classroom
              D. making right use of the technology in class
              (2) Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with ______ .
              A. he course material
              B. Others' misuse of technology
              C. the writer's class rule
              D. discussion topics
              (3) The underline prefix "anti" in Paragraph 3probably means " ______ ".
              A. to change
              B. to oppose
              C. to accepts
              D. to improve
              (4) According to the writer, the use of new technology in the classroom may ______ .
              A. Help students to better understand historical topics
              B. Encourage students to have deep conversations
              C. Keep students from doing independent thinking
              D. Lead students to misuse the technology
              (5) We can learn from the last paragraph that the writer ______ .
              A. Thinks highly of technology0free conversation in his class.
              B. Will change his teaching plan soon
              C. Will give up teaching history
              D. Won't hold on to his belief
              (6) The writer wants to tell us that ______ .
              A. Technology has different influences in different classes in college
              B. Technology makes it difficult to have true communication in class

An astronaut’s work may sound exciting, but living in space isn’t as fun as you think. The website www.space.com lists the disadvantages of living in space. Here are some of them.

When astronauts work outside the station during spacewalks, they have to wear special gloves. The gloves are very tight. They can hurt the astronauts’ fingernails(手指甲) and even make them fall off.

In space, you don’t have many choices in what you eat. It’s hard to get fresh fruits and vegetables. It is not OK to eat bread because it leaves crumbs(碎屑). Crumbs could fly around everywhere.

In space, it is impossible to have a good shower because water can fly all over the ship and break the machines. Astronauts have to use a special water-shooting(喷水) gun and a washcloth.

Astronauts lose their bone strength quickly during their stay in space. So far, there is no way to solve this problem. They do exercise while they’re in space to try to keep their bones strong as long as possible.

Perhaps the hardest part of life in space is the feeling of loneliness. Astronauts sometimes have to spend weeks and even months away from Earth. They miss their friends and families.

Chuck Wall teaches management and human relations at Bakersfield College. He walked into class one day and told his students that their homework was to perform one act of random(任意的) kindness. His students did not understand the homework and didn’t know what to do, but the professor would not answer their questions. He encouraged his students to work it out for themselves.

One week later, the students entered the classroom excited to share their stories. One student told of giving away blankets to the homeless. Another reported on helping a dog to find its owner, and another student had been trying to find a long, lost friend. Students were energized (给予活力) by the homework assignment(任务) and wanted other people to be kind too. With the support of local businesses, the students made stickers (张贴物) to put on cars that invited people to do something kind for others. They sold the stickers and decided to donate the money to a center for the blind——not surprising as Professor Wall is blind.

Since then, similar kindness activities have been started in schools around the world. Many schools organize a Random Acts of Kindness Week, around November 13th, to celebrate World Kindness Day. Some schools use each day of Random Acts of Kindness Week to perform a different kind act, such as making a new friend, helping someone, doing community service, or raising money for a charity. Students learn to consider other people and thank about how small actions can make the world a better place.

              C. to spend time helping others

              B. the students didn’t do Chuck’s homework
              C. Chuck Wall is an unusual teacher

When we ask readers, teachers and students what their biggest problems are in reading English newspapers, almost everyone immediately answers “vocabulary”! It is true that some readers are probably to find many new words, but that is not really a “problem”. We hope to show you a good way to increase your vocabulary.

One way to do this is, of course, to make a great effort to learn new vocabulary by using your dictionary. Look up a large number of new words you meet in the newspaper. That is not the method (方法) we are going to talk about, however. In fact, overusing the dictionary is not good for your understanding of the stories. It slows down your reading speed so much that it is difficult to see how ideas fit together. Instead, we are going to suggest very useful ways for increasing your vocabulary and your reading comprehension (理解) at the same time.

One of the fastest way to build your vocabulary through the newspaper is on a “topic by topic” basis (基础). You can do this by reading stories with similar topics. You can also follow an interesting story for several days or more. You will begin to see a group of words commonly associated (有联系的) with the topic.

The other way we suggest is to use context to learn vocabulary. Sometimes you can guess the meaning of the new words with the help of the sentences around them. Also, some newspapers are made to be understood easily. Stories are written for general audience, not for experts. And there are also several photographs besides the stories.
