I think it is safe to say that snakes are not popular among most people. It would be hard to find a person who is neutral(中立的),or simply doesn’t care one way or the other. What I wonder is why something even without legs causes such great fear.

Snakes are quite useful, but that doesn’t seem to matter.Snakes help control the population of mice.Withoutsnakes, perhaps we would find mice everywhere. Most of us,however, would rather see a mouse than a snake.

The poison argument(毒性的争论)is a strong one. Some snakes are poisonous, and this causes people’s death. However, the poisonous snakes are only a small number. We can’t say all the snakes are bad just because of a few dangerous ones.

And what do we do with the people who really like snakes? They like snakes even more strongly than we dislike them. These people learn about them, find them out,and watch them carefully. Why? The only reason I can think of is that these people are open-minded.They are able to put aside differences and welcome the snake as a friend.

Whatever the reason for our like or dislike, snakes do something good in the circle of life. They would prefer to be left alone, and that is what we should do.If you’re lucky, you might not run across more than a few of them in a lifetime. That would be fine with most of us.

              (1) How does the writer describe the appearance of snakes?

              A. Something even without legs.
              B. Something not popular among people.

              C. A person who is neutral.
              D. A person who cares about nothing.

              (2) Which of the following shows that most people dislike snakes?

              A. They welcome snakes as their best friends.

              B. They would rather see a mouse than a snake.

              C. Theywonder why snakes can cause great fear.

              D. Theylearn about snakes and watch them carefully.

              (3) Although some snakes are poisonous,

              A. they cause many people’s death
              B. they control the population of mice

              C. they are not dangerous to people
              D. they are only a small number

              (4) People who really like snakes are open-minded because they

              A. are able to put aside differences

              B. think all the snakes are poisonous

              C. are able to deal with poisonous snakes

              D. take part in the poison argument

              (5) The last paragraph seems to tell us that the writer

              A. dislikes snakes
              B. has the best luck

Do you often talk with your parents? Here is some advice on how to talk with them.
Try to start your talk with something fun. This will make talking easier. For example, ask them questions about their day. How's work? They love this.
Make it clear what you want to tell your parents. If they have an opinion, let them finish it and don't stop their talking. Ask them to do the same for you.
Show them respect(尊敬) by listening to them carefully. Look them in the eye.
Be honest. Honesty builds trust(信任). Life is good when your parents trust you.
If your parents don't understand you, that's OK. It doesn't mean they don't love you. Sometimes you have to explain the things to them again.
When you finish the talk, thank them for listening. Say something like, “thanks, that helped”. It will let them know this is important to you, and make them want to do it more often.

Creating good study habits is necessary for success in school. The following tips will help your child create the actions that will help him in school, college and throughout life.

◆Homework comes first. When my children come home from school, we talk about their day on the way home. Once inside the house, I offer them a snack and they sit down to do their homework. Homework should get done before after-school sports or surfing the web. Finishing their homework first allows my boys to enjoy their activities without worrying about their homework.

◆Deal with the problem before asking for help. Many parents make the mistake of doing their children’s homework for them. This doesn’t help your child learn how to deal with problems. When your child runs into a problem he cannot solve, rather than giving him the answer, teach him methods for dealing with it and show him how to work it out step by step.

◆Use available (可用的) resources. Rather than giving your child the meaning of a word, tell him to look it up in the dictionary. The act of looking up the word will help him learn it. If you give him the meaning, he will forget it easily. Although it’s important to share your knowledge, your role as a parent is to teach your child how to use all the resources that are available to him.

◆When your child has finished his homework, help him check over it for mistakes. When the job is done, rather than saying,“Good job!” ask him how he feels about what he has achieved. This will help him to become more confident.

Following the tips above will help improve your child’s study habits. They can benefit (得益于) a lot from such habits.

              Our Needs

People are different, but they all have the same needs. Needs are things people must    have to live. Our bodies need food and water. We also need air to breathe. We need a place     to live to keep us safe. We need clothes to keep us warm. If we did not have these things,     we could not survive.

Needs may be different for people who live in different areas. If you live where it is     cold, you may need special clothes to keep you warm. If you live where it is hot, you may   need more water.

People have found new ways to meet their needs. Farmers grow food that people eat.   They used to plant seeds by hand. They used to pick plants by hand. Now they have     machines that do this work.

                 Our Wants

Wants are things people would like to have but do not need to live. Suppose you hope to  get a football for your birthday. A football is a want. You can live without it.

Sometimes we might want something so much that it feels like a need. We have to make choices, though. If you need a new coat for winter, you might not be able to get the football  you want. We must choose what we need over what we want.

Sometimes we must make choices between things we want. Suppose you want to go to a birthday party for your uncle. That day, a friend asks you to go to a movie. The movie is at    the same time as the party.

If you choose to go to the party, then what would you give up? What would you give up   if you went to the movie?

It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted(接受)by all people.

Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and math need not be taught in detail(详细地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all take an interest in the world.

I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.

Today we find that school students hardly ever spend much time on sports. Is it because they aren’t interested in sports? No, they often say they have other more important things to do.

Why don’t the school students have much time to play sports? Exams! They have to spend much time on all kinds of exams at school. So many of them almost become bookworms(书呆子).Books stop them from going out for sports. Because of the pressure (压力) from their parents and teachers, the students have to work harder and spend most of their time on books. As for the students, they want to get good grades so that they can improve (提高) their studies. So it is necessary for them to give all of their free time to their studies and stop their school sports.

In fact, studies can’t go without enough exercise, because a quick mind hardly goes along with a weak (虚弱的) body. If you don’t have a strong body, you can never get anything or any great success in your life.
