In recent years, more Chinese people have been travelling at home and abroad, but some of them don't have good manners.

For example, on Tiananmen Square in Beijing, there is chewing gum (口香糖) in almost every corner. And newspapers show photos of a child peeing (撒尿) outside a restaurant at Hong Kong Disneyland. In foreign countries, things are sometimes even worse.

Some hotels in Singapore are upset with Chinese tourists. This is because some of them spit in their rooms and smoke in bed.

Some of them even took off their shoes, and one coughed loudly without covering his mouth. Lots of other travelers moved away from them.

"Bad manners hurt China's' international image (形象)”, explained Zhai Weihua, a Chinese government official.

A young man went to the boss of a logging crew (伐木队) and asked for a job.

"That depends," replied the boss."Let's see you fell this tree."

The young man stepped forward, and skillfully felled a great tree.

The boss was amazed and said: "You can start Monday.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday went by, and Thursday afternoon the boss went to the young man and said: "You can pick up your wages (薪水) on the way out today."

The young man was very surprised, He replied: “I thought you would pay on Friday."

"Usually we do," said the boss.“ But we’re letting you go today because you’ve fallen behind. Our daily felling charts(日程表)show that you've dropped from first place on Monday to last place today."

              B. Health is the best treasure a man can have.

              C. Hard work can make up for lack of intelligence (勤能补拙).

              D. Taking time to “sharpen the axe” can make us more effective.

Primary and junior high school students in France will no longer be allowed to use mobile phones in school.

On Dec10,2017, France’s Education Minister(教育部长)Jean- Michel Blanquer said that mobile phones will be banned from schools in France. This rule will go into effect(实施)in September 2018.

Children will be allowed to bring their phones to school, but will not be allowed to use them at any time until they leave school, even during breaks and lunch time.

“These days, the children don’ t play at break time anymore. They are just all in front of their smart phones and from an educational point of view that’s a problem,” Blanquer said.

The number of children who own a cellphone has greatly increased in France over the last few years. More than 8 in 10 teenagers in France had smartphones in 2015, compared to 2 out of 10 in 2011.

While some people have welcomed the rule, a great number of teachers, students and parents are questioning it. Some schools plan to put all the studentsˈ phones in one place and give them back at the end of school. But it’s not easy to do this. Valerie Sipahimalani, the deputy head of a French teaching union, pointed out that many schools have no space to keep the phones and teachers donˈt have the right to search students. You may not realize it,but you are doing much more than just studying when you are at school.School is also the place where you learn to get on well with people. But this is not always easy. What can you do if you just don’t like one of your classmates?
If you discover that you have problems getting on with your classmates or friends, the most important thing to learn is tolerance.Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect the differences in others. We can not change the way that other people do,so it is important to learn to live happily with them.
Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other.Getting to know someone may help you understand why they do things differently.Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad.Tolerance teaches us to keep a temperate and open mind.
You need to remember an old saying,“Treat others how you want to be treated”.If you tolerate something,it does not mean that you have to like it.No one is asking you to change who you are or what you believe in.Tolerance just means that you should respect the differences in others and not try to make them change.
It is important to practice tolerance, because it will make everyone’s life easier.Learn to accept people for their different abilities and interests. The world is very different, and practicing tolerance in your own school and city can help make a difference.

              Feeling left out?

A reader wrote in to say that she was feeling lonely at break because her best friend wasn’t around. Here’s our advice to her, and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.

It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around. Maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends. but how do you make them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.

Start by looking around your classroom. Think about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for time to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation(欣赏)to them. Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to kids you want to play with. act friendly, and say “Hi,can l play, too?” or just join in. If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind and friendly. Share and offer to help. Pretty soon, you’ll have one or two, even more new friends.

You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before she left. You can introduce her to your new friends.

Do you love taking photos with a camera? People who always take photos may actually be harming their memory, because they’re not concentrating on the event itself.

“People so often take out their cameras almost mindlessly (不费心思地) to catch a moment, and they are missing what is happening right in front of them ,” said Linda Henkel, from the university. Henkel and her team decided to perform an experiment. They wanted to find out whether taking photos in a museum weakened a visitorˈs memory of what they had seen. So they simply told a group to look around the museum, and either take photos of the items on display, or try to remember them. The next day, the group was tested.

People who took photos in the museum were less likely to remember what they had seen. In addition, the amount of detail(细节) they remembered was worse than those who didnˈt take photos. “These results show how the mindˈs eye and the cameraˈs eye are not the same,” said Henkel.

But donˈt put your camera down just yet. Other studies have found that looking back at old photos helps us remember an event, compared to just taking a photo and forgetting about it. So next time you’re thinking of taking a photo, just think: is it better to look at the beauty around you with your own eyes, or behind the eye of the camera?

              C. People who didnˈt take photos did better in the experiment.
              D. People who took photos in the museum could remember more details.
              (4) Where can we probably read this passage?

On a family vacation in Washington D.C., there was a homeless man down the street. My family  (1)  with our eyes at our feet. On our final day in the city, when my parents went for an evening walk, I ran out of our hotel room  (2)  and ran down to the street to the homeless man.

He looked at me curiously, surely not  (3)  anything from a middle school girl. I asked him what he would have for dinner. He replied he would have hamburgers.

I ran into the grocery(杂货) store down the block and  (4)  five hamburgers and many other foods. I ran back with a grin(咧嘴笑) on my face and  (5)  the grocery bags full of food to him. His  (6)  has been in my mind since then.

I ran back to the  (7)   as soon as possible. When my parents  (8)  , my dad told me he had a story for me. He asked if I still  (9)   the homeless man down the street from our hotel and I shyly nodded. He then told me, with a grin on his face,  (10)  they were returning from their walk the homeless man was  (11)   grocery bags full of food with other homeless people around and they were all smiling and laughing when they  (12)  . I smiled at my dad but never to this day have told him the  (13)  story of the homeless man.

I still haven’t forgotten that man’s smile but I wish I had the  (14)  to do this often. One small  (15)  act by a middle school girl can begin a series of effect of smiles and dignity(尊严). So please, share a smile and give some dignity to the homeless.
