Youth, friendship and love are the main themes of this year’s Chinese movies, such as So Young(《致青春》) and American Dreams in China(《中国合伙人》). Tiny Times(《小时代》), one of the most popular movies this summer, also has the same features.

The movie was based on author and director Guo Jingming’s novel of the same name. It tells a story about four girls who come from different backgrounds and of different personalities.

Since it was shown on June 27, Tiny Times has made 483 million yuan at the box office. The sequel(续集) of it was shown on Aug 8 and it has also been a big box office hit.

Cao Yuhan, 13, a high school student at Beijing Jianhua Experimental School, is a big fan of the movie. “I’m deeply touched by their friendship,” Cao said. “When Nan Xiwang is in trouble, the other three girls try their best to help her, even running barefoot in the snow.                              However, not everyone has had good things to say. The people’s Daily said that the film went too far in encouraging youths to become materialistic(物质至上主义的).

Film commentator Raymond Zhou wrote on his online blog that “Buying luxury goods (买奢侈品)seems as a way to express love or friendship, and the word ‘money’ is repeated over and over again.

Song Kexin, 14, a high school student at Zhida Middle School in Taiyuan, Shanxi, shows a typical example of a fan’s attitude(态度). And that’s to look for the positive value. “That movie is a little far from our daily life. My friends and I are not having parties every day,” Song said, “But I admire Tang Wanru’s optimistic attitude(乐观的态度). She’s always looking at the bright side of life. I should learn from her.”

The European Union (EU) is like a wall. Some Eastern European countries like Albania want to get inside, while the UK is thinking about getting out.

On June 23 this year, people from the UK will vote (投票) and decide if the country will stay in the EU, the UK Prime Minister David Cameron said on Feb 19.

The EU is an organization in which its 28 member countries work together. But the UK has always kept away from getting too deeply into it. Now, 19 out of the 28 members use the same money: the euro (欧元), but the UK is not one of them. Also, some EU countries set up the Schengen(申根) area, so people in it can move freely without a visa (签证), just as we do between Chinese provinces. However, the UK chose not to join.

In recent years, the EU seems to be even less attractive to many British people. More and more foreign workers from other countries, especially those in Eastern Europe, go to Britain. And many British believe that it put a burden on the UK’s welfare (福利), reported the Daily Mail. Besides this, the country has always given money to the EU but gets less in return, according to The New York Times.

However, there are also people who want the UK to stay in the EU. They say it’s easier for the UK to sell things to other EU countries. The EU as a whole has a big say on the international stage, and leaving the EU would hurt the UK’s influence on the world. Leaders of other EU countries like Angela Merkel of Germany and Francois Hollande of France hope to keep the UK in the EU, too.

“We need to think carefully about what is best for Britain, what is best for our future,” said Cameron. And as each side has its own ideas, we may not know the result until June.

Getting electricity has always been a problem for the 173people living in Nuevo Saposoa,a small village in Peru,South America. However, things went from bad to worse in March 2015after heavy rains damaged the only power cables in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps, which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the harmful gases they produce.
Luckily, researchers at the University of Technology (UT) in Lima,Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful solution. They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil, both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light bulb.
While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the ides is quite simple. As plants create their food (using the sun’s energy, water and chemicals from the soil),they also produce waste which they return to the soil.Tiny animals in the soil eat this waste and they produce electrons-the building blocks of electrical energy. The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to capture the energy and keep it in the lamp’s batteries for later use.The researchers say a single charge can power a 50-watt Led light for two hours-enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done.
The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2015.So far, they have been a huge success!Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest communities,42% of whom have no electricity.

The government in China plans to end its one-child policy and letfamilies have two children instead.

The plan was announced on Thursday after high –level politicalmeetings in Beijing. A Chinese Communist Party statement gave anumber of reasons for the change in policy. The statement said the change is meant to balance population development, stop a falling birth rate(出生率) andstrengthen the country’s labor force(劳动力).

China, with the largest population in the world, started the one –child policy in 1980. But the government allowed only a small number of couples to have two children. For example, some families in the countryside could have two children, if the first-born child is a girl.

In 2013, the Chinese government gave other couples a chance to have two children if one of them was an only child.

Jiang Quanbao, a teacher and population expert, explained how Chinese families react to the newest policy. “Too many young people in the cities are no longer interested in having a second child,” he said. “People in the countryside are more interested. But some of them are already allowed to have two children. ”

At the end of 2014, China had a population of 1.37 billion people. A total of 800 million of them have jobs. But the labor market population will drop in 35 years. That is to say, the country will be in great need of labor by the year 2050. With the two-child policy, an increase in births can solve this problem.

Boys and girls, what do you think of the two-child policy? Do you want to have a new-born brother or a sister?

This photo has touched a lot of people’s hearts. A reporter, Nadia Abu Shaban, shared it on the Internet recently. In the picture, a Syrian(叙利亚的) girl “ surrendered(投降) ” because she thought the photographer‘s camera was a gun. She was very scared.

It was taken by a photographer, Osman Sagirli. He said he took the picture at a regugee camp(难民营)in Syria last December.

The girl’s name is Adi Hudea. Her father died in 2012. She has been living with her mother at the refugee camp ever since.

“You know there are refugees in the camps. It makes more sense to see what they have suffered, not through adults, but through children, ”Sagirli said.

In 1971 there was a war in a part of Nigeria called Biafra,in western Africa.People were dying, children were hungry and there was a lot of disease(疾病).There were thousands of people who needed medical help—but there were no doctors or nurses to help them. Some doctors from France went to work there as volunteers, and some of them decided to start an organization to help the people in disasters(灾难) all over the world. That was when Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF) was born.
Since it started,MSF has helped people all over the world. The disaster might be war or an earthquake that means people need medical help.
About 90% money that MSF needs comes from personal donations(捐款);the rest come from governments and business.MSF helps everyone,it doesn’t matter who they are.
MFS has about 3,000 volunteer doctors in nearly 60 different countries. These volunteers do many different things:some,of course, care for people who are sick or injured, and others, train local doctors and nurses in their own countries.MSF also sends engineers to poor countries to help people to do things like making wells,so they can have clean water.
__________________They are sometimes attacked(进攻) or killed. For example, five MSF volunteers were killed in Afghanistan in 2004.
All the volunteers worked hard, the act of their great bravery and their selfless spirit moved the world in 1999.MSF won the Nobel Peace Prize.

British people are famous for drinking tea. But brother and sister, Sahara and Bobby Green, became young millionaires when they opened a chain of American-style coffee shops in the U.K.

Having the idea: It started when Sahara took a weekend trip to New York to visit her brother Bobby. One evening, in a Thai restaurant, Sahara told Bobby how much she wished she could buy American-style coffee in London. Bobby suggested they start their own coffee shop. Sahara fell in love with the idea.

Doing the Research: Back in London, she spent a whole day on the London subway, getting off the train at different stations to taste the coffee. “It was terrible, and I knew there was a gap in the market.” In November 1995, they opened their first Coffee Republic shop in central London.

Making it work: The first year was very difficult. There were problems finding and keeping staff, and British people were not used to the names of American coffees, like latte and machination. But being successful was their dream and they were not going to give up. Today, there are over 100 Coffee Republic shops all over the country and the company has revenues(收入) of £30 million a year.

Advice for others: Sahara has now written a best-selling book about their experience, called Anyone Can Do It! She hopes it will help other young people to start their own businesses. She believes success is 1% idea and 99% hard work, but she says, "If you think you have the energy, then get out and follow your dream."

Young people are perhaps better-known for spending money than saving it.But some new banking websites are seeking to change that. These websites offer young people the information and tools they need to watch over their money. The websites also let the users share their financial* experiences with other young people.

Nineteen-year-old Alix Scott has been working at a store this summer. She is saving money to pay for college next year.“I have to save for all my college money because my parents call’t offer me enough. So,I have to depend on my own savings,”She said. But instead of putting her money in a local bank,Ms Scott began using SmartyPig,a web-based banking service. She said,“When I do that,I stop the drive to just spend the money.”

Michael Ferrari developed SmartyPig with a friend in 2007.SmartyPig is really all about helping people save for very specific financial goals. So that could be a wedding,a vacation,an I-phone.Mr.Ferrari says SmartyPig opened after he started a college savings account* for his new baby.He says that experience helped him realize the power of saving for a specific goal.Helping other savers pay attention to their goals is the idea behind his online company.

Michael Ferrari said,“For example,I’m saving up for a vacation.I want to save 5,000 dollars.I want to meet this goal in three years.SmartyPig will in fact help you know how much money you need to save every month. You don’t have to move from your present bank. We’ll actually go in and get those money on the day you refer to every month and we’ll put them into.your SmartyPig account, where they’ll actually increase interest*,as well.”

Twenty-two-year-old Khang Nguyen is studying engineering in college. He likes being able to share his saving goals with his online community. He said,“I think it’s actually a good thing that they are able to see it.Like,a group of my friends after they found out,you know, about what I do,they always come ask me for financial advice.”

A growing number of young people have shown an interest in online banking websites like SmartyPig.They like their operation and services and like to share their personal information online.

In today’s world many people seem to be hungry for money. Some of them even lose their lives for it.Money does have its most useful effect on the poor, but once a person has a rich life,a lot more money doesn’t mean more happiness.

If money was everything, all millionaires(百万富翁)would have true love, true friendship, good health and a long life. However, this is not always true.

Nothing else is more pleasant than the three words which are”I love you” But can love be bought?I’m afraid not.Love means to givenot to takeTo every person, health and a long life are probably the most precious(宝贵的)things.Well, can health and a long life be bought with money? The answer is“No”.

Of all the longest living people in the world, few of them are millionaires.True friendship can’t be bought either. In a word, where money is worshiped(崇拜),money can cause brothers to quarrel, lovers to hate, strangers to fight and so on.No matter how much money you have,it is still not enough to make you a happy person if you have no one to laugh with,no one to cry for.

Sports, school are tiring. But there is a great way to unwind after all of those activities. Go to north London, to the coolest part of the city---Camden. There you can find fashion trends (流行,趋向) and famous people.

Sam and I walked down Camden High Street and made our way to a bridge over Regent’s Canal. It is a 9-mile man-made river that goes through London.

We went into a big market and saw crazy signs, fun T-shirts, and things like hand-made earrings for sale. We bought Chinese fried noodles. It tasted very different from the noodles we make at home, and we ate it with a fork instead of chopsticks!

Camden is famous for the punk(朋克)style that started in the 1970s. Punks walked around with bright pink and green hair, broken clothes with safety pins, metal buttons(纽扣)and pierced ears and lips. Punk music shops played loud, heavy rock music.

But there were also groups of hippies(嬉皮士)with big sweaters. They sat in cafes drinking soymilk, with black clothes, black lipstick and painted white faces.

Besides all these “normal” people, a lot of famous people come to Camden. Actor Orlando Bloom from Pirates of the Caribbean lives there.

Camden is especially known as a home to famous musicians. Lots of top bands played here, including Coldplay, Oasis---and Sam’s favourite band, The Vaccines. I had never heard of them before---But luckily they were playing that night in Camden.
