Many expressions that we use in American English come from novels.Today we will look at some of them from Lewis Carroll's famous novel"Alice in Wonderlan"in detail.
The story is about a young girl falling down a rabbit hole. When she finally lands, she finds herself in a strange world and meets some strange characters.
The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit, who runs past her and says some strange words.Alice chases(追赶)him, and that is where her adventures begin.
In English, chasing a white rabbit means chasing an impossible clue and finding yourself in a misleading situation.
Then,as she runs after the rabbit, she falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.
To fall down the rabbit hole can mean to enter a confusing(令人困惑的)situation. However, usually we use this expression to mean we get interested in something to the point of distraction(分神).It often happens by accident and is about something not that meaningful.
Later in the story,Alice meets the March Hare and the Hatter at a crazy tea party.Hares(野兔)have long been thought to behave excitedly in March, which is their mating(交配)season.Scientifically, this may not be true. But to be mad as a March Hare means that someone is completely mad,or crazy. The expression mad as a Hatter also means to be completely crazy.Of the two,mad as a Hatter is more common. But don't tell the March Hare.Who knows how he will react(反应)!
Near the end of the story,Alice meets the Queen of Hearts.A woman who is called a Queen of Hearts likes controlling others and always tries to control everything and everyone around her.

I want to rant a little about cell phones. Here are a few things I hate about them.
I hate it when people tum cell phones on in the movies to check their messages. When someone turns a cell phone on in the movies,I want to turn on a flashlight and point it at their faces.
I hate it when people talk loudly on cell phones in libraries,in quick bookstores,on buses or on trains.Do these people really think we want to hear their conversation? It's not very interesting,to be honest. They're usually talking about what they ate for breakfast, and we can't hear the other end of the conversation(although I'm pretty sure the other side of the conversation is just as boring).
I hate it when people answer their phone calls while I'm talking to them, and then,in front of me,continue a long conversation.I also hate it when people text while I'm siting at dinner with them. This is probably the worst thing people do on cell phones. This sends the message to the person you're eating with that"You are not interesting or important enough.I'd rather text my other friend.Obviously,I like this other friend much better than I like you."
I saw a girl yesterday standing in front of the Pacific Ocean. The sun was setting. The sky was pink,
orange, and blue. The waves were rolling onto the beach. She was looking down at her little pink cell
phone, testing something. She did not look up once.I really wanted to tell her,"A"
              (1) People usually rant about things that make them ______
              A. angry
              B. embarrassed
              C. sad
              D. disappointed
              (2) The writer believes the worst thing that people do with cell phones is teat someone ______
              A. while reading in a library
              B. while walking at the beach
              C. while watching movies in the theater
              D. while eating dinner with someone else
              (3) The writer probably ______
              A. hates people who have cell phones
              B. talks loudly on her cell phone on buses
              C. tries to use her cell phone politely
              D. calls someone often at breakfast
              (4) What would the writer probably say at the end of the passage? ______
              A. Put away your cell phone and go to enjoy the latest movies!
              B. Turn off your cell phone and talk to your friends face to face!
              C. leave your cell phone in the bag and go home for dinner with your family!
              D. Throw your cell phone in the ocean and enjoy the wonderful worried in front of you!

In 1769,long before computers were invented,a man from Hungary(匈牙利)built a wonderful machine that could play chess very well.It delighted(使高兴)people all over Europe and beat nearly everyone it played, including famous figures like French leader Napoleon Bonaparte, and scientist and inventor Benjamin Franklin. For decades, many people believed that it was truly a thinking machine.
There were people who said it was a hoax, but could not prove it or explain how it worked.About 85 years later, the secret was finally revealed. There was a man hiding inside the machine all the time…who was obviously very good at playing chess!

As an exchange student,I must admit (承认) that at first America was a big culture shock for me.
I stayed with a host family in a small town.My host parents organized a lot of activities in my spare time so that I wouldn't miss home or feel lonely.
However, life was hard to get used to.My main problem was with the language.I failed to understand much in the first few weeks because everyone spoke so fast.ThoughI managed to get used to it.I still have problems because they used a lot of idioms (习语).
Another difference was with the food.My host family always had bread, potatoes and salad for meals.I really miss the dumplings, rice and delicious dishes from home.
School was a big shock too. They do not require students to wear uniforms,so students can wear almost whatever they like. Some students have strange hairstyles (发型) as well. Some students even have pink or purple hair!
---By Brad LiMy dream was to see some real snow,so during the Christmas holiday,we took our passport (护照) and flew over the Pacific to Calgary,Canada. We took a bus to a ski resort in the Canadian Rockies. As the bus climbed through the mountains,we saw the thick snow on the trees.I was dying to get out and play with it.At last,we reached the resort and quickly jumped out of the bus. This was our first experience with snow.We were like little children---we made snow balls, and threw them at one another. Then we check in at the hotel.
The next day,we put on our ski suits and gloves, took our skis and went outside onto the snow. Our instructor took us to a gentle slope (斜坡),and showed us some basic skills. To be honest, the first lesson was not a great success.I kept on falling over, and I had to hold on to a rope to keep my balance (平衡).
However, the next day,I only fell over a few times, and I managed to do a few rapid runs.I felt pleased with myself, and my instructor told me I was doing much better.Although it was very cold,I spent most of my holiday skiing.I had a wonderful time.

Children with no shoes on do better at school than those with shoes on,a study suggests.
For over 10 years, researchers from universities observed (观察) children in 100 schools from 25 countries. They found that classrooms were quieter when children took off their shoes. It provided a quieter environment where pupils were more willing to focus on study than those with shoes on.
"Children are much more willing to sit on the floor and relax if they have no shoes on,"said professor Stephen Heppel,a lead researcher.
"The last place a child would sit to read is an upright chair. And we've found that 95% of them really don't read on a chair at home,"Heppel added."When they go on holidays, they read lying down."Professor Heppel hopes to bring the"shoeless policy"to all U.K.schools.He says relaxing conditions at school make children feel as if they're at home.He believes all the teachers will be glad to adopt the habit.

Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you.Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and the technology is there.
So how?The cars have sensors(感应器)all around which can find other cars and objects in the road.Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems(卫星导航系统)are used so the car knows how to get where you want to go.All you have to do is type in the address! Finally,a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up,stop and turn.
Sound like your idea of heaven?Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while‘driving'would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn't have to worry about remembering directions to where you're going. In addition, computers would also drive more safely than people-they would obey the rules and have quicker reaction times when in dangerous situations.
However, there are many drawbacks of driverless cars.Computers would have difficulties making ethical(道德的)decisions:if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn suddenly and potentially kill the car's passengers? Moreover,I personally find driving fun-I'd miss never driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made-should children,or drunk people,be allowed in a driverless car by themselves?Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?
I'm not certain I'd want a driverless car-but it's only a matter of time before they'll become more affordable and popular on our roads.
