When you are at the top, you can see all of the nice things, just like in life."

At that time, I was too young to   (9)   his words. But I got new hope. Finally, I found   (10)   standing at the top of the mountain. I could see the whole sky, and it was as clear as crystal(水晶).

There was once a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace,Many artists    (1)  .The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose    (2)   them.

There was a calm lake in one picture. The lake was a perfect mirror and peaceful towering(高大的)mountains were all around it.Overhead was a blue    (3)   with light white clouds All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains, too. But they were bare(光秃秃的)and had rough rocks.

Above was a(n)   (4)   sky,from which rain    (5)   and in which lightning flashed.Down the side of the mountain a waterfall fell quickly. This did not look peaceful    (6)   .

But when the king looked    (7)   ,he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush     (8)   ina crack (裂缝)in the rock.In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There,in the middle of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest—in perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the second picture.Do you know   (9)  ?

‘‘Because,’’explained the king,‘‘peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble,or hard work,Peace    (10)  to be in the middle of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.”

An elderly builder was ready to retire. He told his boss that he wanted to leave the house-building business and live a more leisure life with his  56 and enjoy his big family. Although he needed to retire, he would miss the pay that it could deal with the life  57 .

The boss was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one  58   house as a personal favor. The builder said yes,but at that time it was easy to see  59  he was not careful. It was an unfortunate way to end a devoted career(忠诚的事业).

60  the builder finished his work, his boss came to inspect the house. Then he  61 the front-door key to the builder and said,“This is your house... my gift to you.”

The builder was  62 !What a shame(羞愧)!If he had only known he was building his  63   house, he would have done it all so differently.

So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at a time, often putting  64  than our best into the building. Then, with a shock,we realize we have to live in the  65  we have built. If we could do it over, we would do it much differently.

Life is a do-it-yourself project. Your attitude and the choices you made today help build the "house" you will live in tomorrow. Therefore, build wisely!

The first time I remember noticing the crossing guard was when he waved to me as I drove my son to school. He    (1)  me with a puzzle—all because he waved to me like someone does on seeing a close friend. There was a big,    (2)  smile on his face. For the next few days I tried to  (3)  his face to see if I knew him. I didn’t. Perhaps he had    (4)  me for someone else. By the time I was quite sure that he and I were strangers, we were greeting each other warmly every morning like old friends.

Then one day I found out the truth. As I drove near to the school he was standing in the middle of the road  (5)  his stop sign, I was in line behind four cars. After the kids had reached the safety of the sidewalk, he lowered his sign and let the cars through. To the first car he waved and smiled in just the same way he had done to me over the last few days. The kids already had the window down and were happily waving their reply. The second car got the same  (6)  from the crossing guard, and the driver, a businessman, gave a short wave back. Each of the following car of kidson their way to school responded heartily.

Every morning I continued to watch the man with  (7)   . So far I haven’t seen anyone  (8)  to wave back. I find it interesting that one person can make such a(n)    (9)  to so many people’s lives by doing one simple thing like waving and smiling warmly. His cheerfulness armed the start of my day. With a friendly wave and smiling face he had changed the  (10)  of the whole neighborhood.

Many people say their most painful (痛苦的) moments are saying goodbye to those they love. After

watching Cheryl, my good friend, staying with her sick mother for months, I think the most painful moments can be in the 1____to say goodbye.

Cheryl made the two-hour trip over and over to be with her mother. They 2____the long afternoons comforting (安慰) and sharing good memories. 3____her mother’s illness got worse and worse, Cheryl sat for hours in 4____by her mother’s bed.                     Cheryl would tell her not to 6____and say it didn’t matter. Still her mother apologized (道歉) at each goodbye. One day Cheryl found a 7____to give her mother the same comfort her mother had given to her so many times.

“Mom, do you 8____when I joined the high school basketball team?”Cheryl’s mother nodded.“You’d drive so far and sit for so long but I even 9____had a chance to play. Have you ever had a day when everything goes wrong? Not too long ago, I was having one of those days.   (1)   low spirits, I was unhappy and sad. I was thinking about my problems. After all, no one else was   (2)   the same problem as I was.

I expressed my sad state(状态) to my mother, hoping for some pity.   (3)  , she said, “I heard Lily was having a difficult day,   (4)  . Why don’t you make her some cookies and we’ll take them to her this afternoon?” I didn’t really want to, but decided that I didn’t want to go back to my own problems just yet. I made the   (5)   and placed them on a plate. Then I made a card with a sunflower on it and wrote a small warm and sweet note.

That afternoon, we dropped in at my friend’s house. I went to the door and   (6)   the bell. Soon, Lily came to the door. She didn’t expect our visit. So she looked at us in surprise. Before she could say   (7)  , I rushed, “I heard that you were having a hard day and decided to bring you something. I hope your day goes   (8)  .” Lily’s face was getting   (9)   in that small act. It was as if a dark sky suddenly shined with the golden rays of the sun. Her day was cheered up.

I got back into the car and drove home. That day I experienced the truth “Those who bring   (10)   to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.”

When I was about 12 years old, I really wanted a new bike! I   (1)   my parents my birthday wish, but I knew there was little hope because my family could   (2)   have the money.

On my birthday my parents told me they had my   (3)   outside in the back yard. There was my back,   (4)   it wasn’t the bike that I thought it would be. This one was yellow, old. It was so

                (5)  ! But I put on a smile(微笑),   (6)   as fast as I could and didn’t look back.

As time went by, I began to understand my parents gave me   (7)   much more than just an old bike. They gave me a life lesson about   (8)  . When you give something out of love, it doesn’t matter what it is in fact. What matters is the love that is in it. I like to remember this   (9)

because giving a gift is not about money. It’s about how much love you can feel from it. Do remember, a gift that   (10)   two dollars isn’t any less valuable(有价值的) than an expensive one.
