We see them everywhere-on boxes of food,on packages and on CDs.They,of course, are bar codes. The invention of bar codes has changed the way we shop and how companies learn where their products are.
It was two university students from America,Bernard Silver and Norman Woodland, who first got the idea of bar codes. In 1948,they heard that the president of a food company was looking for a way to easily get information about what was being sold to customers. They tried to help by using a code system. They invented a large electronic reader to read the codes. However, computers couldn't easily record the data that was read.
Then,in the 1960s,David Collins made important developments in bar codes. He developed a system for recognizing train carriages. In order to develop this technology for other kinds of businesses,Collins started his own company. In 1969,Collins's company put a bar code reading system in a car factory, showing that bar codes could be useful.
Shortly after Collins started his company,an American electronic company called RCA also saw the potential(潜力) of bar codes to help businesses.RCA's system, which recorded how much of a product was sold, was not perfect.Since bar codes were not common, not all products had them and different companies used different codes. Then,Woodland helped develop the Universal Product Code (UPC),which gave every product a code that included information about the manufacturer and the kind of product being sold. This made bar codes much more practical.
In addition to shops, hospitals use bar codes to identify patients by giving them cards with bar codes on them.Libraries use bar codes to record which books have been lent, and airports use them to find out where bags are going.Bar codes have made life much easier and simpler.

              FUN WITH COOKIE
Paul: "I have been working for this company for ten years, however they chose the new guy for promotion(升职) over me."
Julia: "Well, that's just the way the cookie breaks into pieces."
This is an informal expression that means bad things happen in life and there is nothing you can really do to prevent it. It's not worth getting sad; you should just try and accept it calmly.
Of course in the UK we would generally use the word "biscuit" instead of cookie when talking about those hard baked, sweet, flat cakes which are so popularly eaten with a cup of tea. Cookie is originally a Dutch term meaning little cake and has spread to the United States because of immigration(移民) from Holland.
Also in the US we can find "fortune cookies" which are usually served with Chinese food. However they are almost unknown in mainland China and were invented in California by Asian immigrants. They are crisp cookies with pieces of paper inside, on which are written clever sayings, prophecies(预言) or words of wisdom.
A Cookie in computing is a collection of information which is used by websites to know users who have visited the site before. They are stored on your computer when you use the Internet, and also you will find the websites you used easily.
A cookie can also be a person. A tough cookie is unemotional(冷漠的) and a hard businessman while a smart cookie is sharp, clever and not easily fooled.
Biscuit and cookie is just one example of the difference between British and American words.
It is fun to know what "COOKIE" (56) ______ in different ways

              阅读下面短文,在表格内的空白处填入合适的答案(每空词数不限)
Do you think that living a hungry life is last century's story? Well, it may be this century's headline. The world has growing worries about a global food shortage. Right now, there are still 870million hungry people in the world, according to a survey of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. Children can't escape this, either. Around fifteen million children die of hungry each year. What's causing food shortages? There are several reasons. There are now more droughts and floods. This is very harmful to farmers and their ability to grow food.
Besides, with the growing population, feeding everyone becomes more difficult. There are a little more than seven billion people in the world. By 2050, the world population will be more than nine billion.
Another reason is food waste. The average person throws away 50kg of food every year. How can we help with food shortages? The easiest way is to cut down on food waste.
Next time before throwing away the food on your plate, just think how much work has been done to make it. By buying less, we waste less. This takes the pressure off producing so much food. And it helps to solve the problem of food shortage. You can also ask your schoolmates to join you.
In 2013, researchers at Kansas State University in the US put up short anti-waste slogans(标语) in dining rooms "Think Before You Waste". Guess what happened? Students wasted fifteen percent less food after that! The author of the study said, "You don't need a huge activity to make a difference.
