How can you learn about a person when you meet him for the first time? The fastest way is to look at his shoes.

A recent research shows that people can learn 90% about a stranger simply by looking at the person’s shoes. The research includes the study of the size, price, color, style and quality of the shoes, in order to learn how old the person is, how much he makes every month, what kind of person he is in life, how he works and so on.

In the study, 63 university students looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by volunteers. The volunteers in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then they were asked to fill out a questionnaire (问卷).

So what did the shoes say about their owners?

Some of the results were expected. People making more money each month most commonly wore expensive shoes. Colorful and fashionable shoes were usually worn by people who are outgoing and outstanding.

However, some of the results are surprisingly interesting. For example, comfortable shoes were mostly worn by people who easily agree with others. And ankle boots (裸靴) were more likely worn by aggressive (有进取心的) people.

The strangest of all may be that those who wore uncomfortable-looking shoes are mostly calm and quiet people. And if you have several pairs of new shoes and take very good care of them, you may spend a large amount of time worrying about what other people think about you.

              (1) The fastest way to learn about a person you meet for the first time is __________.

              A. to talk to him

              C. to work with him

              (2) People who easily agree with others mostly wear _________ shoes.

              A. expensive B. comfortable C. fashionable D. colorful

              (3) The statement “_________” is the author’s opinion.

              A. The volunteers in the study were photographed.

              B. People making more money commonly wore expensive shoes.

              C. Some of the results are surprisingly interesting.

              D. Ankle boots were more likely worn by aggressive people.

              B. what the research shows

Many reports say that sports help young people stay out of trouble. If a young person plays sports,he or she is less likely to have problems. This is because sports teach people about rules. They also teach people that if they work hard, they might succeed.

Another good way of sports is that they make people leave their houses. These days,a lot of people spend too much time watching television and playing video games. When you play sports, you go outside and exercise in the sun.You take in fresh air.All of these things are important.

You’re probably not going to become a sports professional, but that doesn’t matter.Sports will help you become a better and happier person.Sports will help you make friends and stay healthy. Here is another good reason to play sports:Sports are fun.

Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The program works because everyone’s eyes are different. So in the future you won’t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You’ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.
The eye-recognition(眼睛识别) program is already being tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon, this technology will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.
However, scientists are working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your finger.
Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don’t change as you get older, or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes, so the program can be up to 94% correct, depending on(依靠) how good the technology is. Some programs may only be right 51% of the time. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.
In the future your computer will be looking at you in the eye. So smile!

              (1) How does the eye-recognition program work?

              A. You type in your number.
              B. You say your name.

              C. You look at the machine.
              D. You show your ID card.

              (2) Why can the program be up to 94% correct?

              A. Because eyes never change.

              B. Because hands or fingers can get dirty.

              C. Because people like the idea of the program.

              D. Because the program is widely used around the world.

              (3) We already have machines that can tell who you are from __________.

              A. your eyes or your smell.

              B. your voice or the mark made by your finger

              C. your face or your voice

              D. your face or your hand

              (4) What does Paragraph 4 talk about?

              A. Introduction to other kinds of programs.
              B. Advantages of the program.

              C. The places where the program is tested.
              D. The way how the program works.

              (5) Of the following things, which one is right according to the passage?

              A. You needn’t remember a number when you take money out of a bank.

In China, safety education is becoming more and more important now. The last Monday in March is for students to learn it at school. It helps students learn more about what they should do to keep themselves safe. What are the accidents at school? Take a look.

Stampedes(踩踏), earthquakes and fires are the main accidents at school.

A stampede always happens in crowded places. When students around you begin to push, just stand there and try to hold onto something. If you fall down in the crowd, move to one side and protect your head with your hands around.

When earthquakes happen, you can get under a desk quickly and hold on. It’ll protect you from falling things. If you are outdoors, find a place away from buildings, trees, and power lines.

When there’s a fire, leave the classroom quickly. It’s better to put something wet over your mouth and nose. In this way, you won’t breathe in smoke. Many people die in a fire, not because of the fire but smoke. It makes them cough and they can’t breathe. That’s very dangerous! So when you want to get out, you should make yourself close to the floor. Then you can breathe some fresh air.
