I was not having a happy holiday. My family had decided to go to the   (1)   inNew Hampshire again. But I found it  (2)  .

What made the holiday even worse was that I had to share the same bed with my brother.

But I was wrong. This trip was the   (3)  holiday I have ever had. During the holiday, I met a very special friend.

It was on a sunny day. I saw a man carrying a small brown   (4)   while I was walking in the countryside. Wearing white clothes, the man   (5)   aghost. As he looked at me, I felt scared. I wanted to  (6)   when the man spoke to me. “Hello. Beautiful day, isn’t it?” he said.

The man talked a lot. But I wasn’t listening very   (7)  because I was looking at his little bag. I wanted to see what was inside   (8)  !

He saw me looking at the bag and he asked me   (9)   I would like to see. Out came a lovely, beautiful puppy (小狗). The brown puppy was   (10)   because it was only about two months old.

The man then asked me, “Would you like to   (11)   this puppy?”

I had always wanted a puppy and now I had the chance. I   (12)  him, took the puppy and ran home happily. For the rest of that summer, I played with him all the time. And   (13)  the trip, I took him home. The puppy is now loved by all my family. He is a friend to both my brother and me, a warm little ball of happiness in our lives.

I’ve always wanted to thank the   (14)   because he changed my life.

His gift has given me years of   (15)  . And I never have boring family holidays any more.

Once my mother told me a story. In Africa, when an antelope(羚羊)wakes every morning, the first thing it thinks about is, “I must be able to run faster than the fastest lion, or I’ll be killed.” At the same time, a lion wakes from his dream. The first thing the lion thinks about is, “I must be able to catch the slowest antelope, or I’ll starve(饥饿) to death.” So almost the same time, the antelope and the lion get up and start running toward the rising sun.

This is life: full of chances and challenges. Whether you are an antelope or a lion, you must go ahead when the sun rises. For students, it is just the same. If we do not study hard, sooner or later, we will fall behind the other students. At first, I didn’t know what the word “exam” meant. Later, I knew an exam was a kind of competition. In competitions, there are always winners and losers. As I grew up, I got to know competition well. In one’s life, there must be competitions, so people can improve.

Each time I saw children playing games, and heard their laughter, I wished I were that age again, However, I remembered my parents’ words: “You must work very hard in order to have a good future.” So I picked up my pen and began to study hard again.

I was still not sure what competition really meant. One day, I was taking part in an English-speaking competition. When I went to the stage, I saw other students looking at me kindly, I suddenly knew what competition was. It is not as cruel as my teacher and my parents told me. In fact, competition is the opposite: it is kind and necessary.

I learned a lot from realizing this fact. Now I understand more about the world. Competition is important for us all.

There are many things we need to know that we do not learn at school. For example, if we want to use our money wisely, we need to shop carefully. We need to know how to compare (比较) the prices of things in different shops. We need to be able to compare the quality of different brands. We need to know how to make a choice when we shop.

Knowing how to make such choices is a “life skill”, and we need these skills if we are to live useful and happy lives.

Some of these choices are small. For example, will I take an apple for lunch or a pear? Will I go to school by bus or on foot? Will I wear the red T-shirt or the blue one to the movies? Other choices are more important. For example, will I eat healthy food for lunch or will I eat junk food because it is tastier? Will I work hard in all my classes or will I only work hard in the classes I enjoy? We make choices like this every day.

We have to realize that the choices we make can affect(影响) the rest of our lives. Just as importantly, our choices can also affect other people. The next time you decide to waste time in class, play a joke on someone or talk loudly at the movies, think about this: Who else does your choice affect?

              Dear Teens,

①Do you wonder why some kids can stay calm while others get nervous so easily? Why do some kids do everything very quickly while others are verysluggish? Why are some kids always happy while some feel upset all times?

②One of the answers to these questions is personality(个性). People were born with different personalities. A baby gets its blood type, genes(基因) and other physical things when it is still inside its mother. These factors(因素) make part of your personality. Besides, family life, school learning and life experiences can also decide what kind of person you are. You may not like your personality. Don’t worry. You can always try to change it and make yourself better.

③If you are a selfish person who always thinks of yourself, you can start this way. Try to give others a hand and ask for nothing in return. The happiness you get from giving instead of receiving will help you change your personality.

④If you are very shy and don’t know how to make friends, just tell yourself to smile at others and start talking to others with warm greetings. You are sure to have more friends than you used to do.

⑤If you are a sluggish person who always does things slowly, you’d better make a plan every day. When you finish something, draw a happy face. If not, draw a crying one. No one would like to see a crying face and you will have the desire to change it into a smiling one.

⑥All in all, don’t get too worried about your shortcomings(缺点). No one is perfect. That’s why many people are trying to change. Don’t give yourself a hard time about it all. It’s not easy to change the habits overnight. Remember “ Rome is not built in a day”. Keep working at it. One day you’ll see that you can turn over a new leaf and be a new person.

Sports are very important to us. Sports are popular with young and old people. Many people do morning exercises, go to different sports clubs and take part in sports games. Other people like sports too but they only like to watch sports games and listen to sports news. They don’t do sports.

P.E. is an important subject in our school. Students have P.E. classes five times a week. Boys and girls often play volleyball in P.E. classes. There is a big playground in our school and students like to do sports there. Our school has a lot of sports games and many students take part in them.

Sports can help people to keep healthy. People of all ages must take care of their health and do exercise regularly (有规律的). My favorite sport is swimming. I go to the swimming pool once a week. But I like relaxing by the lake or the river and swimming there.

            • 7. When trouble comes, what do we usually do? We pick up our mobile phones and call for help. That’s easy, right? But in an emergency, many people are unable to call for help. Floods and earthquakes come suddenly. Wars can hurt or kill. Successful communication can sometimes mean the difference between life and death.Meet French NGO Telecoms Sans Frontiers (Telecommunications Without Borders(边界)). Its goal is to use mobile communication technology to help people in need. TSF began in 1998. First, they opened their main base (总部) in France. Then in 2003, they started another base in Nicaragua. The next year they opened their Thailand base. Now if a disaster hits anywhere in the world, TSF is ready. They can send workers to a disaster area to set up communication systems within 24 hours.Once TSF arrives at a disaster area, they set up telephone connections and Internet service. They share these services with other international helpers on the scene such as the UN or UNICEF. Mobile communication helps other volunteers do their jobs better.TSF also offers three-minute phone calls to local people who need to contact their loved ones. These communications can allow people to get together again after being separated(分开). Often the callers are moved to tears after speaking to a relative found to be still alive. Then the families can decide on a safe course of action for their family members.Since 1998, TSF has helped thousands of people in many countries. Most of the TSF workers does not get paid with money, but the satisfaction of helping others and changing lives is often a great reward.

We are learning English, but how can we learn English well? A student can know a lot about English, but maybe he can not speak English.

If you want to know how to swim, you must get into the river. And if you want to be a piano player, you must play the piano. So, you see, you can learn English only by using it. You listen to your teacher in class . You must read your lessons every day. You must speak English to your classmates and teacher and also you must write in English. Then one day, you may find your English very good.
