Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle, a thinker, said, “ Happiness depends upon ourselves.” In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.

When I was in Grade I in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Carl. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on Friday? He must be a fool." I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friend tomorrow afternoon), so I shook my head and went on. Suddenly, a crowd of kids ran toward him, knocking all his books out of his arms and making him fall down on the mess. His glasses went flying, and I saw them fall on the grass about ten feet from him. He felt low and terrible. As he touched around looking for his glasses, I ran over to him. I handed him his glasses and said, "Those guys are awful. They really should be educated to be better."

He smiled at me and said, "Hey, thanks!" I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. Then I knew he lived near me and he had studied in a private school before. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. I found him a pretty cool kid actually. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. The more I got to know Carl, the better I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him.

Over the next two years, Carl and I have been best friends. One day, he told me he had to prepare a speech for graduation (毕业). I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I hugged him and said, "Hey, big boy, you'll be great!" He looked at me with a real grateful look and said thanks.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began, "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you get through those hard times. Your parents, your teachers, your sisters and brothers, maybe a coach, but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give him or her. I am going to tell you a story."

I just looked at my friend surprisingly as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend at that time. He mentioned how he had cleaned out the lock in his heart. He looked at me again and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the silly." He continued. I heard my own breath go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his Morn and Dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize the meaning of their smiles.

Never underestimate the power of your behaviors. With one small action, you can change a person's life. For better or for worse.

The first man saw it, he sadly said to himself, “My life is just like that spider’s; busy all the time but getting nothing?” He became sadder.
The second man saw it and said, “What a stupid spider! Why doesn’t it find another way to a drier place? I’d never be that stupid.” So he became smarter.
The third man saw it. He was quite moved by the spider’s perseverance(坚持不懈)and said to himself, “I won’t let a little spider be stronger and more persistent than me. I’ll learn from his example and become stronger,” and he did.

A true friend is always helpful. I didn’t believe it until one thing happened(发生)to me when I was in Grade 8.

Jason was one of my classmates. He and I were also neighbors (邻居). He always listened to his mother but I didn’t like listening to my mother. I didn’t think it was necessary for her to teach me anything. Jason knew all about that but he said nothing to me.

One weekend, Jason invited me to watch a movie. I liked movies very much so I went to the cinema with him happily. The movie was about the love between a mother and her son. After watching it, I began to know how great the love of the mother was. I felt sorry that I didn’t listen to my mother before. I decided to think more about my mother than about myself. After I told that to him, Jason smiled (微笑) and said, “It’s really necessary for you to watch this movie. It’s good for both you and me.”

At that time, I knew why he invited me to watch the movie. Just at that time, I knew a true friend is always helpful.

Once, a circle(圆环) broke. It missed a small part of itself. The circle wanted to be whole, se it went around and looked for its lost piece. But, because it wasn't completed, it could roll (滚动) only very slowly. It smelled the flowers along the way. It talked with the worms. It enjoyed the sunshine. It found lots of different parts, but none of them fit. It left them all by the side of road and kept on searching.

One day, the circle found its lost piece. It was so happy. It could be whole, with nothing missing. It fixed itself and began to roll. Now that it was a perfect circle, and it rolled too fast to notice the flowers or to talk to the worms. The circle missed the flowers and the worms. It left its perfect piece by the side of the road and rolled slowly again.

Perhaps we are more whole when we are missing something. In some ways, a man who has everything is a poor man. He will never know what it feels like to hope and dream of something better. He will never know the experience of finding something he has always wanted and never had.

This photo has touched a lot of people’s hearts. A reporter, Nadia Abu Shaban, shared it on the Internet recently. In the picture, a Syrian girl“surrendered (投降)” because she thought the photographer’s camera was a gun. She was very scared.

It was taken by a photographer, Osman Sagirli. He said he took the picture at a refugee camp (难民营) in Syria last December.

The girl’s name is Adi Hudea. Her father died in 2012. She has been living with her mother at the refugee camp ever since.

“You know there are refugees in the camps. It makes more sense to see what they have suffered, not through adults, but through children,” Sagirli said.

Jealousy(嫉妒) is a very common problem in our life. When someone does better than us, usually we get angry because we want ourselves to be No.1.

We may become jealous(嫉妒的) when one of our classmates wears new shoes. We may become jealous when someone gets good grades in an exam. We get unhappy because these good things are happening to someone else but not to us.

It’s a bad thing to feel jealous. When we feel jealous, this feeling may bring bad results, for example, saying bad words about the person we envy(感到妒忌).

How should we do to deal with(处理)jealousy?

First of all, we should be satisfied(满意的) with the things we have. Second, we should learn to turn this kind of envy into a power. In fact, sometimes it can help us know what we like. It can help us become what we really want to be.

Life is like the four seasons. Now I am very old,but when I was young,it was the spring of my life. I was born,I played a lot,and then I started school. I learned many new things. Like a flower,I grew bigger every day. There were happy days and sorrowful days:some days the sun shone, and some days it didn’t.

In my twenties,I had a good job. I was strong and happy. Then I married and had a child. In those days, I didn’t have much time to think. Every day I was busy and worked very hard. And so,I started to get some white hairs. The summer of my life passed quickly.

Then the days got shorter. Leaves fell from the trees. My child was a university student, and then an engineer. My home was much quieter. I started walking more slowly. One day I stopped working. I had more time. I understood this was my autumn, a beautiful time when the trees change color and give us delicious fruits.

But the days kept getting shorter and colder. Winter has come. I am older and weaker. I know I do not have many days left, but I will enjoy them to the end.

If you arrange the 26 English letters alphabetically(按字母表的顺序排列)and use numbers to represent each of them, for example, 1 for a, 2 for b, 3 for c…, you can change an English word into a number. So hard-work becomes 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=98, meaning 98 is its mark; knowledge: 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5=96, while love:12+15+22+5=54, and luck : 12+ 21+3+ 11=47, a small mark. None of these words can give one a full mark. What about money or prayer(祈祷)? They can’t , either.
Then what else? Don’t be worried. You can always find an answer to a problem in your life, when you change your way of looking at things or doing things, or your attitude(态度).Yes, attitude is the word, see for yourself: attitude:1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5=100,a full mark.
Different attitudes lead to different courses of life. Most times people hope for a better life. It is possible that one will have a change for the better after one has changed one’s attitude.
When you change your manner and became friendly towards others, you’ll meet more smiling faces towards you. In the same way, if you take a positive (积极地) attitude towards failure(失败),you’ll find it’s also rewarding though it has caused you losses.
