Some people love eating food right after it is cooked. I prefer food just taken out from the freezer (冰箱). Fruit, candies, nuts, chocolate, cake with buttercream frosting (糖果), even peas, all of them taste delicious when frozen. In fact, I often eat them that way.

I was a kid when I picked up the habit. In my family, lots of things were thrown into the freezer--finally, two freezers--to prevent them from going bad. Among them were some of the candies my sisters and I had collected on Halloween.

If we eat when they are still warm, we'll find ourselves taking the cookies more than we should. It's better if we can put them into the freezer and wait. That way we'll eat less and enjoy them more because they are hard and chewing (咀嚼) becomes a slower, more patient effort. That's the point about frozen buttercream frosting. Pm it in your mouth at room temperature, and it's gone very quickly. But when it's frozen, you can enjoy the taste much longer as it melts (融化) in your mouth.

The freezer treats a lot of fruit kindly. Take frozen grapes for example, I keep a bowl of grapes in my freezer. They become a little icy, and somehow their sweetness is improved. They are perfect and healthy dessert (点心). This is the same with oranges, apples, bananas...You might think bananas would get super-hard when frozen. Wrong! They become cool, creamy and sweet. If you have wisely covered some or all of the bananas with melted chocolate before putting them into the freezer, they will have a double taste.

As long as you aren't eating anything that truly has to be hot, go ahead and experiment.

              (1) What does the passage want to tell us?

It is well known that the Japanese people’s love of fish is almost as strong as a bee’s interest in honey. As fish populations were decreasing, fishing companies were forced to fish further and further away from the shore. Then they had a big challenge — how to keep the fish fresh for longer. So they decided to keep the fish stored in freezers on the boats. But the public did not like frozen fish. So again the fishing companies had a new bigger challenge. What they decided to do was to have fish tanks on their boats. After catching fishes, they would put them in the tanks and keep them living there until they got back to shore. But in this protected environment, lacking predators(掠食者), the fish slopped moving around. The Japanese public felt these dull fish did not taste fresh, which had an unpleasant effect upon sales. Once again the fishing companies had an even bigger challenge ...

Stop for a minute! Before we go any further, I would like to ask “What are your challenges? How do you handle an unexpected challenge?” May I think it this way that you should try to attack your challenges? Conquer them with a Swiss Army knife. Take the most proper and simple tool that you can adopt to deal with your situation.

Now back to our story. How did the Japanese finally figure out the fresh fish problem? Sharks! You might think the same. Sharks were caught and put into the tanks with other fishes. Don’t sharks eat fish? Well, they do eat a few fish, but they did also keep more fish active and alert(警觉的). The fish stay fresh because they are challenged.

Now, try to keep yourself fresh by finding your own shark to offer yourself a challenge in your own business and career.

              (1) The main reason for the fishing company to fish in the far sea is that______.

              A. the fishes farther away from the sea tasted fresher

              B. the fish resource near the shore was decreasing.

Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and the technology is there.

So how? The cars have sensors(感应器)all around which can find other cars and objects in the road. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems(卫星导航系统)are used so the car knows how to get where you want to go. All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up, stop and turn.

Sound like your idea of heaven (天堂)? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while ‘driving’ would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn’t have to worry about remembering directions to where you’re going. In addition, computers would also drive more safely than people — they would obey the rules and have quicker action times when in dangerous situations.

However, there are many drawbacks of driverless cars. Computers would have difficulties making ethical (道德) decisions: if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn suddenly and potentially kill the car’s passengers? Moreover, I personally find driving fun –I’d miss never driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made –should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?

I’m not certain I’d want a driverless car – but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and popular on our roads.

              (1) When using a driverless car, you need only ________.

              A. read the road signs carefully
              B. check the cameras

              C. put the address into the computer
              D. remember the directions

              (2) The third paragraph mainly tells us about the ________ of driverless cars.

              A. instructions            B. standards
              C. advantages D. tests

              (3) The underlined word “potentially” in Paragraph 4 means “________“.

              A. possibly               B. successfully
              C. especially       D. naturally

              (4) What’s the writer’s opinion about future driverless cars?

              A. They’ll cause more accidents.
              B. They’ll be less expensive.

              C. They’ll use less energy.
              D. They’ll run much faster.

Taking away a cityˈs rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we canˈt eat or use. If we kept these things we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.

In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside of city to a dump. Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs and other places.

To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish---filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then youˈd never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.

In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change into something called hurnus, which looks like black earth. It is rich with the kinds of things that feed plants and help them grow.

In 2013.Richard Blackson, the director of an US art gallery, visited 23 schools in Philadelphia. He found a room full of broken musical instruments at each school. The schools said the instruments had been there for a long time. But Blackson also found that 1,000 of the broken instruments could be repaired.

In fact, many public schools in the United States don't have enough musical instruments because of budget(预算) curs. Several students often have to share one instrument. Thus, Blacken started a project called "Symphony for a Broken Orchestra(管弦乐团)", aiming to repair broken instruments for students.

To raise money, he reached out to David Lang, a Pulitzer Prize-winning US musician. The musician Lang came up with the idea of writing a symphony for the broken instruments. On Dec 3,400 students and professional musicians held a concert. They performed Lang' s Symphony for a Broken Orchestra, which shares its name with the repair project.

People can now go online to see profiles(简介) of all of the broken instruments and donate money m "adopt" one or more instruments. The project has raised over $ 237,000 (1.5 million yuan) so far, The New York Times reported. In the fall semester of this year, Philadelphia students will receive the repaired instruments.

High school student Evelyn Mitka, 16, played a violin that was missing a string(弦) during the concert. She told Doge News that the performance taught her a lesson. "You can learn music in an untraditional way. "

“Without music, life would be a mistake,” famous German philosopher(哲学家) Friendrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of our lives. But in recent years, some US schools have cut music classes to control budgets(预算).

For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired(解雇)over 1,000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught art or music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like science, math and history. That’s partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus on subjects that are tested more often.

However, learning music is beneficial(有益的)in many ways.

When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development program. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode(解码)them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.

Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music: Einstein played the violin, and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano.

              (1) Some schools in the US cut music classes, because ______.

              A. students in the US weren’t interested in music
              B. they were too difficult to learn

              C. there weren’t enough music teachers in the US
              D. the schools wanted to control budgets

              (2) In Paragraph 2,what does the underlined word“them” refer to(指代)?

              A. Public schools. B. Fired teachers.
              C. Parents in Chicago. D. Students in Chicago.

              (3) What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?

              A. Different abilities are needed to work together while we are playing music.

              B. Playing the piano needs people to use fingers to make sounds.

              C. Decoding music notes is needed while we are playing music.

              D. Playing the piano needs people to see music notes.

              (4) How many scientists who are good at playing music are mentioned in this passage?
