There are so many expressions in American English that sound pleasant (令人愉快的)but are not.  (1)   When someone says they have to "face the music", it does not mean they are going to a concert. "Facing the music" means to accept and deal with the punishment of an action.

                     (2)   For example, "I canˈt face another night of camping! Itˈs cold and rainy." Or "In life, you must face your fears." Face used in this way is very common. But now, letˈs go back to facing the music. Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful red sports car. She gives you the keys and says, "Thanks so much for watching my car while Iˈm away. But please, do not drive it. It is an extremely (极其) fast car."   (3)   You want to show off to some friends. So, you drive it around town one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. Bang!

When your friend returns you must tell her what you have done and "face the music".   (4)   It could be losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her sports car or both. Whatever the music is, you must face it.

                 (5)  To "take your medicine" means to accept the results from something bad you have done. And if someone says, "You made your bed. Now lie in it." they mean you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results!

In many countries, people celebrate Screen-Free Week. It is on the first week of May every year.   (1)

Supporters of Screen-Free Week say turning off technical equipment (技术设备)is good for kids. According to a study, kids slept better and got better grades when their parents limited their screen time.  (2)  .They point out that many kids who took part in the event in the past now spend less time using technical equipment.

                (3)   Some people argue that screen time is OK as long as kids don’t overdo(滥用)it. Also, others say turning off technical equipment completely for a week won’t teach kids how to balance screen time with other activities.

                 Here’s what two students think:

YES! Kids spend too much time in front of screen. According to a study, kids spend about seven hours a day in front of TVs,computers and other devices.  (4)  They can make art, play sports or hang out with friends and family.

                                                                           Davis, 14, New York

NO! Not all screen time is bad for kids.  (5)   Besides, it’s important for kids to use technical equipment ,because many jobs depend on knowing how to use technology. Instead of working on cutting kid’s screen time, parents should help kids learn to use technical equipment wisely.

My name is Pablo. I think I’m a lucky boy. I have a good family, and we live in a nice neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.   (1)  We have beautiful beaches, hotels, restaurants, shopping and sports.

However, in my beautiful hometown, there are also very poor neighborhoods. These areas are crowded and have a lot of crimes.   (2)  Some don’t really have a childhood because they’re homeless and live on the streets. They don’t have education. They don’t have enough food. Many use drugs (毒品) or have illnesses or mental (心理上的) problems.

Last year, I came back to Puerto Vallarta from my university in Mexico City. I spent one year as a volunteer with an organization called Outreach International. They have several programs.   (3)

I worked in a home for street children. At this home, the boys have a place to sleep and three meals daily. The home keeps the boys off the streets.   (4)  As a volunteer, I helped to prepare meals. I taught games — such as basketball, football and art. I helped the kids with their homework. These kids can be fun, but they’re also really hard to deal with. Their experiences on the streets make them strong and not always “sweet little children.”

At the boys’ home, I met two other volunteers — Brian from Canada and Greg from Australia. (5) .

We were the same age, came from good homes and had a good education. They were both college students, like me. We became very good friends. Now, we email each other.

It was the best — and most difficult — year of my life. I learned a lot that year.
