With the development of technology, WiFi is becoming more and more popular and important in people’s daily life. But have you ever experienced it? Just imagine what life will be like if there is no Internet.Maybe you won’t be able to talk with friends, play video games or search for information for your homework on the Internet. But in fact, only one third of the world’s population are able to get information on the Internet.The rest are too poor to buy WiFi access(使用    权) or they live in remote areas.As a result, they live without the Internet.

Google and Facebook, two world-famous technology companies, have decided to do something about it.Google’s Project Loon will try to send balloons which are 15 meters wide into our Earth’s stratosphere(平流层) in 2015.The balloons are made of a special material that is three times thicker than the plastic bag we use every day. Each balloon will carry a minicomputer and a WiFi radio. The WiFi radio will send the Internet over the areas it is floating over. Then people can get up-to-date information on weather or news.

Perhaps he made sounds like those he heard all round him----water splashing(飞溅), bees humming(嗡嗡作响声), a stone falling to the ground. Somehow he learned to make words. As the centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.
People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. Each contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not need all these. Only a few thousand words are used in everyday life.
The words you know are called your vocabulary. You should try to make your vocabulary bigger. Read as many books as you can. There are plenty of books written in easy language. Your dictionary is your most useful book.

Cell phones are one of the most useful inventions of the last 50 years, but not everything that is said about them is good. People often say the cell phones are harmful to lots of things, from finger injuries and headaches to house fires. The cell phones even have something to do with the disappearance of bees.

The theory (理论) is that the bees’ navigation systems (导航系统) are destroyed by the radiation(辐射) that is given off by cell phones. Bees have a built-in system a little like a GPS, andthishelps them find their way back to their hives (蜂巢). But recently, thousands of bees have failed to find their way home. It is believed that they are dying far from their hives.

The problem was first noticed by beekeepers in the US and the situation is more serious than it seemed at first. Did you know that most of the world’s crops are pollinated by bees? Without bees, the crops can’t continue to grow. Many beekeepers in theUSandEuropehave reported losing between 50 and 70 percent of their bees. Rick Smith, a beekeeper in Arizona, says that bees are dying in numbers that “we haven’t seen in the past.” At one time Smith had 8,500 hives. Now the number is becoming smaller and smaller, and it is said to be 1,280.

Nobody has shown that the cell phone theory is true, but it’s a fact that bees are disappearing in very large numbers. And we can’t manage without them. Einstein said if all our bees disappeared, man would live for four more years. The situation needs to be evaluated (评估) by the world’s best scientists. If the cell phone theory is correct, we need to do something about it immediately, before it’s too late.

Learning about the environment is very important. There are many good books that will help you learn. To get started, ask your teacher or a librarian for some suggestions. You can also look at some good websites(网站) with information about the environment and climate change. Climate change may be a big problem, but there are many little things we can do to make a difference.

Driving a car or using electricity is not wrong. We just have to be smart about it. Some people use less energy by carpooling. For example, four people can ride together in one car instead of driving four cars to work. Whenever we use electricity, we put greenhouse gases into the air. By turning off lights, the television and the computer when they aren’t needed, you can help a lot.

Don’t buy products that use too much energy. Some products, like certain cars, are made specially to save energy. These don’t pollute as much, either. Products like computers, TVs, and VCRs with the ENERGY STAR label(标签)R are made to save energy. Buying products with these labels will help protect the environment.

Buy recyclable products instead of (代替) non-recyclable ones. Recyclable products are usually made out of things that have already been used. It usually takes less energy to make recyclable products than to make new ones. So when you go shopping, look for the recycle mark on the package—three arrows that make a circle. The less energy we use, the better.

Many people like to travel by plane, but I don’t like it because an airport is usually far from the city. You have to get there early and wait for hours for the plane to take off and it is often late. On the plane you can’t open the windows or choose (选择) the food. Planes are fast, but it usually takes people hours to go out of the airport and into the city.

I like traveling by train. I think trains are safe. Railway stations are usually in cities. When you are late for a train, you can catch another one. You can walk around in the train and open the windows. You can see many interesting things on your way. I know it takes a little more time.

I also like cars. You can start your journey (旅行) whenever you want to, and you needn’t get to a railway station or a bus stop. Also you can carry many things with you in a car. But sometimes there are too many cars at rush hours (高峰期) on the road and you have to move very slowly.

It is important to learn about protecting our environment. Here are 5R rules for us:

              1Reduce

If you want to reduce the waste, you should use things wisely. People are cutting down millions of trees to make paper. If everyone uses paper carelessly and throws it out, soon we will not have any trees left. We are also wasting other things and don’t know how to deal with the waste in big cities, so it is necessary to reduce the waste.

              2Reuse

You should always think of reusing the things before throwing them away. Give your used clothes or small ones to the poor. In a family, you may pass on such clothes to younger brothers or sisters.

              3Recycle

We can recycle bottles, cans and paper easily. By doing this we save lots of time and money. For example, we can send waste Coke cans to a factory. And they are used to be made into new things by the workers.

              4Recover

When you buy a box of apples, there may be a few rotten (腐烂的) ones. You have two choices: to throw the whole apples away, or to cut off the rotten parts and eat the good parts. In the second way, you are recovering the eatable parts of food.

              5Repair

If one of the legs of your table is broken, you can repair it instead of throwing the table away. If you want to change for better ones, it is better for you to sell the old things or give them to other people who can use them after doing some repair. It is true thatNorth Americais a “throw-away” society, but the time has come to change our way of life so that we can protect our environment. We should try our best.

As a teenager, I had a lot of anger (愤怒) and was not good at communicating with my parents.

One day, when I was getting ready for school, my mother handed me a T-shirt. It was my father’s, not mine. At that time, I was taller and stronger than my father, so when I put the T-shirt on, I felt like I was being choked (窒息) in it!  I realized that it was a small mistake by my mother, but the feeling of being choked made me very angry. Without thinking, I took out my anger on my mother. I ripped (撕破) the T-shirt!

Later, my mother told my father what had happened, “See what your son has done.” Instead of scoldingme, my father asked my mother to repair the T-shirt. He then wore it to work the next day.

Later when my mother told me about what my father had done, I felt ashamed of my behavior. He spent the whole day wearing a ripped T-shirt. At the same time, I was filled with great admiration (钦佩) for my father. His kindness taught me a life lesson I would never forget. On that day, I made a decision that I would never let anger beat me.

“Do you have the time?” In English, it has two different sayings. The first one is, “Do you know what time is it?” The other one is, “Do you have time to do this or that?” The second one is generally used in English speaking country.

People commonly answer the question by saying, “I don’t have time” or “I have no time”. No time seems to express the same thinking as “I don’t want to make time.” No one gives you the time. It isn’t fruit on trees or rains from the sky.

You have the time. The key is what you want to do. You can get money, have a new friend and help someone. If you don’t decide on the use of your time, the decision will be taken away from you. Lots of things around us are ready to pull our time from us. It’s really up to us to decide on how to balance andmanagetime, and that’s a challenge.

Another saying in English is “take your time”, which means “relax; follow your own pace”. A deeper meaning of this simple phrase is that if you don’t take control of your time, someone else will do so for you. It’s a bit like a child being told “eat your food, or someone else will.” It does mean we should have a clear mind to manage time.

Speaking of friends and family relationships, how many times we use “I don’t have time” as an excuse to explain our less contact with them. This excuse may cause a breakdown in a relationship.

Before we make the world’s most common excuse -----“ I don’t have time”, we should think it over.

Almost everybody complains(抱怨)ahoutthe bad traffic. We often hear pedestrians(行人) complain about cars like crazy mice in the street and drivers complain about pedestrians like the blind. We complain about the heavy pollution in the city and complain about too much plastic garbage. We complain about any bad event every day.

However, have you ever thought what we can do for it and what we can do to improve it? Before we complain, let’s ask ourselves if we obey the traffic rules whenever we cross the street.

Several months ago, when I stopped at the traffic light, I watched pedestrians from my taxi. People struggled against the traffic stream. They looked as if they did not see the traffic lights or did not know what they meant when the traffic light were red. Only one lady who wore a red coat stood at the end of the crossing and waited. All the people were moving except her. You can imagine what a beautiful picture at that moment. What a good example that lady showed us. I will never forget that scene.

I know what we lack. Only complaining can’t solve any problem. If you complain about the plastic garbage, please take your own bags when you go to the market. If you are a driver, please wait for pedestrians. If you are pedestrians, please follow the traffic lights. Don’t just talk; do it.

When I was 14, I began an after-school job to work for a newspaper, The Houston Post. I was sent to some of the city’s worst neighborhoods to sell newspapers door to door. Even though the work was very hard, I was thankful for it.

It was a challenge(挑战) because people didn’t like a stranger knocking on their doors, especially a kid trying to get them to buy something. Once a man closed his door in my face heavily and shouted, “I don’t want any paper.” I forced myself to knock again and was able to tell him how great the paper was. I ended up selling him a subscription(订阅). I was soon among the top subscription sellers and, like other successful salesmen , was given responsibility(责任) for training newcomers.

Around this time I started playing the guitar. Before long I was playing in a band. When I turned 18, I tried to become a professional musician. I never lost sight of this dream. I’m sure it came from what I learned from knocking on strangers’ doors.

That experience helped me in many ways. Early in my music career I was locked in a legal dispute (纠纷) with a former manager. He pressured me to back off, but I refused.

Having all those doors closed in my face as a kid gave me the strength to stand up to this man. But this time there was one difference: I was the one saying no. And I won.
