Perhaps you have been told about some habits which stop a person reading fast and have been strongly asked to break those habits which you might have.

Do you still have any of these bad habits? Check yourself by answering "yes" or "no" to the questions:

(1). Do you move your lips (嘴唇) when reading silently?

(2).Do you point to words with your finger (手指) as you read?

(3).Do you move your head from side to side as you read?

(4).Do you read one word at a time?

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, start at once to break the habit.

If you move your lips, hold your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then if your lips move, you will know it and can stop them.

If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with your right hand. Then you will not have a free finger to use in pointing while reading.

If you move your head, place your chin(下巴)in one hand, and hold your head still (静止地).

If you read no more than one or two or three words at a time, you need to work very hard in learning to take in more words at each glance (看一眼) as your eyes travel across the lines of words.

A habit is any action that we have performed so often that it becomes something we do almost without thinking. Some of them are thought to be bad habits. People spend countless hours and dollars each year trying to drop these bad habits but often fail. Why? Change is hard work and there is no shortcut to achieve it. However, there is still some advice for you to follow.

First, look at why you do it. In other words, what’s the result of doing this thing? If your bad habit is shouting at people when you are unhappy or under pressure, what do you get from it? It may make you feel a little better for the moment. Or maybe you have a bad habit of leaving your homework undone. The result could be that you get more time to spend on the Internet!

Next, take a look on the other hand. What are you losing because of your habit? Shouting at other people is a bad habit because it makes people around you feel bad and unhappy. Leaving your homework undone is a bad habit because you may be punished by your teacher. Having more Internet time means that you are losing the chance to learn the things that you need to learn. When you think that way, you’ll find that it’s not wise to keep your bad habit! Now it is time to make a decision. What will you choose? I’m sure you will choose to do what you think is more important.

My summer hols wr CWOT. B4. we usd 2 go 2 NY 2C my bro, his GF& thr 3 : -@ kids FTF. ILNY, its gr8.

Can you understand this sentence? If you can't, don't feel too bad: neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized communication found on Internet or cellphones. To newcomers, it looks like a completely foreign language. So, what is the "translation" of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York; it’s great.

Schoolteachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming(破坏) the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes can be seen in students' writing. They fear the language could become corrupted (面目全非的).

Everyone should just relax, say linguists (语言学家). They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the UniversityofWales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nunberg, from Stanford University, agrees. "People get better at writing by writing," he says, "Kids who are now doing text messaging, e-mail, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than, their parents."

Linguist James Milroy says, for centuries, it is believed without exception that young people are hurting the language. And you canbet your bottom dollarthat when today's teenagers become tomorrow's parents, they too will think this way, Milroy argues that languages do not and cannot become "corrupted(堕落的)"; they simply change to meet the new needs.

However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write Standard English. Cynthia Mcvey says, "I can understand Netspeak worries teachers and it's important that they get across to their pupils that text messaging is for fun, but that learning to write proper English is a must for their future.”

Perhaps we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway.Erin, age 12, says, "I wouldn't use text language in my homework. Texting is just for fun."

Paper is one of the most important inventions of all time. The word “paper” comes from the word “papyrus” — a thin paper-like material made from the papyrus plant. It is believed that ancient Egyptians first used papyrus. In A.D. 105, a Chinese man named Cai Lun created paper by using pieces of old cloth, etc. For centuries, people all over the world used this Chinese way to make paper. In the early 19th century, Charles Fenerty, a Canadian man, invented a new way of papermaking using wood. Today, most of the paper we use is made from wood.

Paper money was invented in the 11th century in China. The government began using paper money because there wasn’t enough copper (铜) to make coins.

Today, it’s hard to imagine life without paper. We use paper to communicate in many different ways. We also use many important products which are made of paper. Take toilet paper for example. Many people believe that an American named Joseph Gayetty invented it in 1857. Walter Alcock, a British businessman, later had the idea of putting toilet paper on rolls (卷轴). In 1942, toilet paper became softer and St. Andrew’s Paper Mill in England began selling the first two-ply (两层的) toilet paper. Today two-ply toilet paper is the standard (标准) in many countries.

So can you imagine what life today would be like without this important invention?

The best way of learning a language is by using it. The best way of learning English is talking in English as much as possible. Sometimes you will get your words mixed up and people will not understand you. Sometimes people will say things too quickly and you can’t understand them. But if you keep your sense of humor, you can always have a good laugh at the mistakes. Don’t be unhappy

if people seem to be laughing at your mistakes. It is much better for people to be laughing at your mistakes than to be angry because they don’t understand what you are saying. The most important rule for learning English is, “Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes.”

My brother Scan and I went to visit Uncle Randolph on his farm. Our uncle was experimenting(做试验) for new things all  the time. We knew he’d been working on something in his barn(畜棚)。

On the second morning of our visit, we ran in the barn secretly before sunrise. At first, everything looked normal. Suddenly, in the corner, we noticed a huge machine with the words TIME MACHINE painted on it We smiled at each other.

Sean and I walked inside the machine. As Sean closed the door, I pushed a button(按钮). The machine started to fly. “Watch the time. Don’t stay too long!” said a voice.

Quickly, we pushed the door back open, but as we looked around, we realized we weren’t in Uncle Randolph’s barn anymore. There was a team of robots milking cows and collecting eggs.

I asked,“Where’s Uncle Randolph?”A robot answered,“Unable to compute Uncle Randolph. We do have an Uncle Sean.”Sean wasn’t prepared for that.

Then we went to the barn door and looked outside. A flying machine landed, a robot ran out and said to the other robots,“Ready for Mars(火星)!”

Just then we heard a message coming from, and five minutes later, we were back in Uncle Randolph’s barn. As Sean and I looked at each other, we both said,There’s no place like home!

            • 10. You may not realize it,but you are doing much more than just studying when you are at school.School is also the place where you learn to get on well with people. But this is not always easy. What can you do if you just don’t like one of your classmates?
If you discover that you have problems getting on with your classmates or friends, the most important thing to learn is tolerance.Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect the differences in others. We can not change the way that other people do,so it is important to learn to live happily with them.
Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other.Getting to know someone may help you understand why they do things differently.Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad.Tolerance teaches us to keep atemperate and open mind.
You need to remember an old saying,“Treat others how you want to be treated”.If you tolerate something,it does not mean that you have to like it.No one is asking you to change who you are or what you believe in.Tolerance just means that you should respect the differences in others and not try to make them change.
It is important to practice tolerance, because it will make everyone’s life easier.Learn to accept people for their different abilities and interests. The world is very different, and practicing tolerance in your own school and city can help make a difference.
