Life today is easier that it was hundreds of years ago,but it has brought some new problems,One of the biggest problems is pollution(污染).(A)We can see it ,drink it and even hear it.

Man has polluted the earth.(B)The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago,the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was not clean in a place, man went to another place. Now man is slowly polluting the whole world.

Air pollution is still the most serious,it’s bad for living things in the world.

Many countries don’t let people burn(C)“有害物质”for air in houses and factories in the city.Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It’s best to ride bikes. When you are riding, there is no pollution. But even in developed countries, most people don’t go to work by bike. It’s not because bikes are expensive or people are tired if they ride to work. It’s because the number of cars on the roads becomes larger. So more people put away their bikes and go to work by car, then things are getting worse and worse. We should have special roads only for bikes and make it so difficult and expensive for drivers(D)        (take)their cars into the city that they will go back to using their bikes.

A Kentucky(肯塔基)family took a vacation to New York City. One day,the father took his son into a rather large building. They were surprised at everything they saw—especially(特别地)the elevator(电梯)at one end of the building.
              The boy asked,“What’s this,Pa?”
The father answered,“Son,I have never seen anything like this in my life. I don’t know what it is!”
While the boy and his father were watching in surprise,an old lady walked slowly to the moving walls and pressed(按)a button(按钮). The walls opened and the lady walked into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched small lights above the walls light up. They went on watching the lights up in the opposite direction(反方向). The walls opened again, and a beautiful young lady stepped out.
The amazed(惊愕的)father quickly turned to his son and said,“Go,get your Mom here.”

            • 5. The famous scientist and thinker, Charles Darwin, was born on February 12, 1809. His family lived not far from the River Severn, England. Charles’ father was a well-known doctor and the son of a still greater doctor and scientist. Charles’ father hoped that his son would also become a doctor.
As a boy Charles liked to go for walks in the fields and forests. He watched nature and compared what he saw with everything he had read in science books. He also liked collecting very much. He collected many things: eggs, stones, and leaves. His father did not like this, as Charles was not studying very well at school. ①为了成为一名医生,十六岁时达尔文就被送到爱丁堡大学(Edinburgh University)学习。But he was interested in the history of nature. Then he studied at Cambridge University until 1831.
Some time later, he heard that the ship Beagle was going on a trip to South America and wanted a scientist. His professor advised him to go. He said the trip would be just for Darwin. So when the ship left England in December 1831, Darwin was on it. The research lasted almost five years. The Beagle studied the waters in the sea near South America. It also visited New Zealand, Australia and islands in the Pacific. Darwin saw many new plants and animals. He collected all kinds of plants, which he sent home from the places he visited. When he returned home, Darwin was warmly greeted by his families and many friends. In 1842, Darwin went to live in Kent, where he continued his studies of the changes in nature. ②Darwin understood that plants and animals are not always the same, and that they really change.
By 1859, Darwin had finished his famous book The Origin of Species. It made a great hit in the world of science. ③He was opposed(反对)by the church and even by some scientists. But later, more and more scientists agreed with him. Darwin continued his studies in science until he died in 1882.

You can see kangaroos everywhere in Australia. They appear on TV, in books and, in the shops. The government even plans to put them on passports.[103]Although it's the best loved animal in Australia, millions of kangaroos are killed every year. Why, people ask, do the Australians kill them? Quite simple, there are too many of them.

The number of kangaroos in Australia is believed to be 20—25 million. It is larger than the number of people living in the country.

There are several reasons for the growth in the number of kangaroos. There is plenty of water in the places where kangaroos live and many of the dingoes (澳洲野狗) that like to kill and eat kangaroos are not there anymore.

Kangaroos also produce (产生) the young all the year round. When a female (雌的) kangaroo gives birth , she then gets pregnant (怀孕) again immediately. The large number of kangaroos means some kangaroos don't get food to eat. They are so hungry that they break into farms and fight against other animals for food.

[104]To solve the problem, the Australian government allows a certain number of kangaroos to be killed each year

Many people don't think that it's right to kill kangaroos but the government thinks that it is only to help the farmers.Australia sells 5 million kilos of kangaroo meat every year—it is used to make hamburgers for dogs.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the nine o’clock Mystery North American. Black bears are shy animals. They are fearful by nature, and will usually run away if they see or hear people. Because of this , it can be difficult for scientists to learn about these animals.

In order to study black bears, researchers from New Jersey, USA, catch bears and use drugs to help them go to sleep. Researchers then work out the size and the weight of the bear, take blood to test for diseases, remove a tooth and take it to the lab to find out its age. From these studies, researchers want to find out how many bears live in New Jersey, how long they live, and how many babies they produce.

83 But in Minnesota(明尼苏达州), USA, researchers study bears that are completely awake. The bears know the researchers’ voices and they are not afraid of the research team. With the help of a few grapes to keep the bears busy, researchers can touch them to check their hearts, look at their teeth, and do other jobs. Researchers can also walk or sit with bears for hours and make videos to learn about their everyday lives.

In both places, the main purpose is the same—to make sure there is a healthy population of black bears. 84 But the research methods and the kinds of information that researchers are able to collect are quite different.
