With the holidays coming up, lots of people will be having parties. Want to make sure you’re a perfect host(主人)or guest(客人)? Now it’s a good time to brush up on your party manners.

When inviting guests to your party, send invitations to their homes instead of passing them out at school. This way, you won’t hurt the feeling of classmates you didn’t invite.

(1)Wait for all your guests to arrive before starting any activities. If people at the party don’t know each other, make sure you introduce everyone.

If your guests bring gifts for you, thank each gift----giver as you open his/her present. After the party, be sure to send a hand-written thank-you card to each guest, telling them how much you appreciate their gifts.

When you receive a invitation to a party, be sure to let the host know whether you can come.

Arrive on time. Bring a gift to a birthday party. (2)If(如果) it’s a holiday party, ask the host if (是否)there’s anything you can bring. Adults often bring a desert or a bottle of wine to a party, even when the host tells them that he/she doesn’t need anything. Young people don’t have to do this, but it’s always polite to ask.

Be friendly to the other guests. Remember to say “Please” and “Thank you”! When you leave, thank the host for the party.

Your schooldays should be some of the best and happiest days of your life. How can you get the most from them, and be sure you do not waste (浪费) this great chance to learn?

Be active (积极的) at school  Don’t say things are difficult or boring. Take interest in school life and your school subjects. Join lots of activities. Put up your hands quickly in class. Go around the school with a big smile. If you are not working, you are wasting your time at school. Teachers cannot make everything enjoyable (令人愉快的).

Keep fit  If you don’t eat a good breakfast, you will be thinking about food in class. If you go to bed late and don’t have enough sleep, you will be sleepy in class. Play enough sports every day in order to keep your body strong.

Face the problem   Do not say you will do things tomorrow. If you get behind the class, it is very difficult to get back in front. You cannot finish the race if you rest all the time. Everyone fails some exams, loses some matches and has bad days. Don’t make small problems very big and important. (1)Don’t forget to ask others for help. You are young, and no one thinks you must do everything quite well!

Spend the weekends  Don’t waste time lying in bed on Saturday or Sunday morning. Go and play sports, get together with friends in the park to relax, learn to play the piano, or help someone with problem. If you don’t want to go out, there are also a lot of things to do. (2)You may read a book, practice English or help Mum with housework.

Follow our advice, and have a happy school life!

              (1) How many ways to have a happy school life according to this passage?

As space science develops, man has learned more and more about space. Space is not only amazing but also dangerous. While working in space, spacemen are facing danger as well as access.

Scientists have found out that radiation(辐射) is the greatest danger to spacemen in space. When spacemen are working in space, they are in danger of radiation from the sun and other stars, which is bad for their health. The damage done by radiation won't be discovered until their children or even grandchildren are born. Some special medicine may work a little, but no really helpful medicine has been found.

(72)Space junk is also thought to be a great danger to spacemen. It's reported that there are 9,000 man-made things flying in space. About 30% of these are man-made satellites(卫星), 10% are spaceships, and the rest are space junk. An explosion(爆炸) in 1999 made a cloud of 300,000 fragments(碎片), each at least 4mm in size, and even a small piece of these knocked against a spaceship window and did some damage. Scientists are watching and reporting any possible danger all the time. They are working on helpful ways to deal with space junk.

Although space is really dangerous, (73)it interests everyone on the earth. In the near future, it may become usual for people to spend a few days in a space hotel. We may even choose to leave the earth and live in space in a few years. So we should care for space and do something to help improve the space environment.

              (1) According to the passage, about______ of man-made things in space is space junk.(填数字)

              (2) Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.

It was December, and Mary was thinking about the Christmas presents for her family. Her dad was easy to buy for. He loved history books. She could look at the books he had and buy something like that.

She would have to ask her mom what she was going to buy for him, so that they wouldn’t get the same one!

Mary’s problem was what to buy for her mom. Her mom didn’t read many books. She loved gardening, but she already had all the garden tools she needed. Also, she liked to choose her plants and seeds herself. Mary had a lot of ideas about the present. But nothing was perfect.

Mom always said that the best presents were the ones that you put time and hard work into. Suddenly Mary had an idea. Why not knit (编织) a scarf for Mom? That way she could wear it to keep warm when she was in the garden on cold days. She’d love it! So Mary bought some pink and orange wool. They were Mom’s favorite colors because they reminded her of the flowers she liked. Mary spent many hours knitting when her mom was not around. She wanted it to be a surprise. When Mom opened the present on Christmas morning, she was very thankful. She knew that Mary had spent a long time on it. She took Mary in her arms and gave her a big kiss!

Why do people cry? Scientists say the body produces(产生)tears because it needs them. One kind of tears(眼泪)is for the eye, the other is for the heart. They both work as cleaners. If something else like dust(灰尘)gets into your eye, tears also come into the eye to clean it out. If you are hurt by something, your strong feelings produce some poisonous chemicals(毒素)in your body, and at the same time, tears come out with them. (1)If tears don’t help clean out these poisonous chemicals, they will do harm to(伤害)the heart.

In the United States men have heart problems more often than women do. (2)Doctors say heart problems have something to do with the pressures(压力)of living and working now.Perhaps men have more of these illnesses because they do not cry enough. They need to cry more.

In fact, you can find many ways of reducing(减少)the pressures to keep fit. Crying is a natural(自然)and physical(生理)one.

All students have to face their own problems when they are growing up. You may not think that having a good family is a problem. But for me, it was. I had to face the problem of being the youngest of the Smith girls.

We live in a small town in Pennsylvania, US. There are three girls in the Smith family, Amanda, Theresa and me. People often say things to me, like "Oh, the three of you, you're such nice girls. Your sisters are so pretty and so thin! You're really nothing like them." That made me sad.

At school, all of my teachers had taught my sisters. On the first day of school, they said "Oh, the youngest of the three! I hope you're just like your sisters. They're such wonderful students. "

People always compared me with my sisters. So I couldn't help comparing myself with them, too. Theresa was smarter, Amanda was prettier. I began to work hard to be more like them. What my sisters did, I did, too. At last, l became dram major (主鼓手) of our school's marching band. Both Amanda and Theresa had been drum majors. I became editor of the school's newspaper. Theresa had been the editor two years before.

But last year, Amanda went to college, and Theresa went to high school. Now I'm by myself at junior high. Everyone knows me, because I'm the drum major and the newspaper's editor.

Now I don't feel like a Smith girl any more, I feel like myself. I'm proud of doing all of the same things that my sisters did. But the best thing is that I stop comparing myself with them.

Tim and Kerry Meek are both teachers. They live in the UK with their two daughters: eleven-year-old Amy and nine-year-old Ella. Recently, the Meek family has become the focus of the whole country after they completed 100 different outdoor activities in one year.

The Meek couple didn’t want their children to spend all their free time in front of the TV and become “couch tomatoes”. So about one year ago, the Meeks decided that watching TV and playing computer games were not permitted . Instead, they set 100 tasks for the two girls to do outside. Although Mr. and Mrs. Meek are not outdoor activity fans, they took part in all the activities to encourage their daughters. It turns out that the two sisters really had a good time joining activities.

Every holiday and weekend, whether it’s sunny, rainy or snowy, the Meeks’ would set off to try the activities on their list, including hiking, sailing, climbing , skiing, and so on. The two little girls not only had a wonderful time, but also learned a lot of skills from the activities. They were even able to stand up in front of their school to give a talk for charity. “Our friends spend a lot of their free time doing things which are harmful to their health. Luckily, we’ve had the chance to experience something different.” Amy and Ella also helped their parents to draw up a new list of challenges for the next 12 months.
