One day, a baby snail(蜗牛) found that he had to carry a big and heavy shell(壳) at any time.He was confused(困惑的), so he went up to his mother and asked, “ Why was I born with a shell that grew so hard and heavy?” His mother said, “Because we don’t have bones(骨头) to hold us up.We can only move slowly, so we need a shell to protect us.”

The baby snail asked again, “The caterpillar(毛毛虫) has no bones, either, and she can’t move quickly. Why can she live without a shell?” The mother snail answered, “That’s because a caterpillar will become a butterfly. She can fly high into the sky.The sky can protect her.”

The baby snail had one more question, “But the earthworm(蚯蚓) moves like us.He has no bones and he won’t turn into a butterfly. Why doesn’t he carry a hard and heavy shell?” His mother said, “He can dig a hole and hide in the ground, and then the earth can protect him.”

The baby snail then cried, “We are so poor! We have no protection from the sky or from the ground!” His mother smiled at him, “That’s why we have a shell. My dear, imagine that if we don’t have the shells, what will happen to us? Hot sun will dry out our bodies and we’ll have nowhere to sleep. What’s worse, we’ll die in the heavy rain. How terrible it is! We don’t depend on the sky or the ground for protection. We should depend on ourselves.”

Charles’ father was a well-known doctor and the son of a still greater doctor and scientist. Charles’ father hoped that his son would also become a doctor.
As a boy Charles liked to go for walks in the fields and forests. He watched nature and compared what he saw with everything he had read in science books. He also liked collecting very much. He collected many things: eggs, stones, and leaves. His father did not like this, as Charles was not studying very well at school. ①为了成为一名医生,十六岁时达尔文就被送到爱丁堡大学(Edinburgh University)学习。But he was interested in the history of nature. Then he studied at Cambridge University until 1831.
Some time later, he heard that the ship Beagle was going on a trip to South America and wanted a scientist. His professor advised him to go. He said the trip would be just for Darwin. So when the ship left England in December 1831, Darwin was on it. The research lasted almost five years. The Beagle studied the waters in the sea near South America. It also visited New Zealand, Australia and islands in the Pacific. Darwin saw many new plants and animals. He collected all kinds of plants, which he sent home from the places he visited. When he returned home, Darwin was warmly greeted by his families and many friends. In 1842, Darwin went to live in Kent, where he continued his studies of the changes in nature. ②Darwin understood that plants and animals are not always the same, and that they really change.
By 1859, Darwin had finished his famous book The Origin of Species. It made a great hit in the world of science. ③He was opposed(反对)by the church and even by some scientists. But later, more and more scientists agreed with him. Darwin continued his studies in science until he died in 1882.

You can see kangaroos everywhere in Australia. They appear on TV, in books and, in the shops. The government even plans to put them on passports.[103]Although it's the best loved animal in Australia, millions of kangaroos are killed every year. Why, people ask, do the Australians kill them? Quite simple, there are too many of them.

The number of kangaroos in Australia is believed to be 20—25 million. It is larger than the number of people living in the country.

There are several reasons for the growth in the number of kangaroos. There is plenty of water in the places where kangaroos live and many of the dingoes (澳洲野狗) that like to kill and eat kangaroos are not there anymore.

Kangaroos also produce (产生) the young all the year round. When a female (雌的) kangaroo gives birth , she then gets pregnant (怀孕) again immediately. The large number of kangaroos means some kangaroos don't get food to eat. They are so hungry that they break into farms and fight against other animals for food.

[104]To solve the problem, the Australian government allows a certain number of kangaroos to be killed each year

Many people don't think that it's right to kill kangaroos but the government thinks that it is only to help the farmers.Australia sells 5 million kilos of kangaroo meat every year—it is used to make hamburgers for dogs.

Now students’ English handwriting gets worse and worse. That makes their teachers feel worried. Is your English handwriting beautiful? If not, here are four steps that really work!
              ◆Use paper that has lines
Using paper that has lines can keep you writing straight when you write English words or sentences. Those lines on the paper can help you to write words in the right size. Be sure to fill the lined space completely. And make sure those capital letters(大写字母) are written properly.
              ◆Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. For some kids, going slower makes the handwriting clear. If you write too fast, it’s hard for you to stop where you should, and even worse, you may make more mistakes.
              ◆ Hold your pencil right
When you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. Some kids press(按,压) down really hard when they write. That makes the handwriting not nice. Try to relax yourself and don’t hold the pencil so hard. Let your writing appear nice and clean. 83 If you do so, people will think you are a student with a good habit.
              ◆Draw more pictures
Drawing can improve your handwriting. You need to use the skills to control your pencil better when you are drawing pictures. 84Even though you have no chance to draw at school, you can practice by yourself at home.

Handwriting is very important. Imagine you are a world-famous movie star or a well-known sports player, what do you do when your fans run up to you? Give them your autographs (亲笔签名), of course!
