“The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence.” That’s an old   (1)   in English. It means other places often look better, more   (2)   than the place where you live. Some people worry that young Chinese are beginning to feel that way. They see young Chinese ignoring Chinese culture and, instead, buying Japanese cartoon books,   (3)  Korean soap operas and even celebrating Western holidays.

Foreign books and soap operas are good, but Chinese   (4)  and actors are just as good. As for   (5)  , Christmas is nice, but it can never have the meaning for Chinese that Spring Festival has, and the   (6)   has nothing to compare with MidAutumn Festival. And let’s not   (7)   the part of Chinese culture I like best:   (8)   friendliness. Not all countries are as warm as China.

It’s good to enjoy other cultures and to learn   (9)   them, but they cannot replace your own culture. It’s good to look on the other side of the fence, but make sure you   (10)   a good long look. You will find that the grass isnˈt always greener on the other side of the fence.

            • 8. Before I came to Italy.I had different ideas about Italian culture.People seem to be very friendly. However, after staying here for a year,I find that's not always the case.Men and women will get quite different traveling experiences in Italy.
If you are a woman traveler, don't be surprised if you get a lot of attention. When you walk alone in the street, you may meet a guy who will help you with your luggage(行李) and sometimes even offer you a ride. However, there is a small chance this thing happens to men.
And if another man is around women, things are even worse. One day,two female friends and I took a taxi in Rome. When these two young ladies got into the taxi, the driver was very happy. He didn't even notice I opened the side door in the front. But when he finally saw me,the driver was silent. He didn't even turn on the taximeter (计程表) and wanted to overcharge me.
It seems like Italian men feel they must make women, whatever their age or how they look, feel confident. Some men love to fight for a woman's attention.
One reason could be that most Italians live in small communities. And mothers are the head of the home. For an Italian man,his mother is the No.1woman in his world. The environment is likely another reason for Italian men's passion(热情) and romance(浪漫).There is sunshine everywhere.Couples walk down quiet streets on nights. No wonder romance comes to life here.

Japanese students work very hard but many are unhappy. They feel heavy pressures from their parents. Most students are always told by their parents to study harder and better so that they can have a wonderful life in the future. Though this may be a good idea for those very bright students, it can have terrible results for those who are not gifted enough. Many of them have their parents lose hope. Such students feel that they are hated by everyone else they meet and they don’t want to go to school any longer. They become dropouts(辍学生).

It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are worried about their children, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that it is the teacher’s work to help children. To make matters worse, a lot of parents send their children to those schools opening in the evenings and on weekends - they only help the students to pass the exams and never teach them any sense of the world.

Many Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students’ hair to their clothes and things in their school bags. Child psychologists(心理学家) now think that such strict rules are harmful to the feelings of the students. Almost 40% of the students said that no one had taught them how to get on with others, how to tell right from wrong and how to show love and care for others, even for their parents.
