Think of life as a game in which you are playing with five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit and you keep all of them in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber(橡胶) ball. If you drop it, it will bounce(反弹)back.

But the other four balls, family, health, friends and spirit, are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be broken. They will never be the same. You must understand that and try to have balance in your life. How?

Don’t look down on your worth(价值) by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different and each of us is special.

Don’t let other people set goals for you. Only you know what is best to yourself.

Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.

Don’t be afraid of difficulties. Be brave!

Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you have been, but also where you are going.

Don’t be afraid to learn. Knowledge is a treasure(宝藏) you can always carry easily.

Don’t use time or words carelessly. You can’t get them back. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery(秘密), and today is a gift; that’s why we call it “ the present”. Life is not a competition, but a trip ,step by step.

Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable(一次性的) toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Many guests like the idea because they don’t have to bring their own. But if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring these things of your own. That’s because some hotels in Beijing have no longer provided guests with these disposables (一次性用品). Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It’s a waste of natural resources (资源) and is very bad for the environment.

In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of lunch bowls every year! Plastic can take 100 to 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw away, the better environment we will have.

So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again. Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life:

Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones.

After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then use it over and over again.

              Do not use paper cups.

At your school canteen (餐厅), use your own bowls and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.

              根据短文内容,判断下列句子的正误。正确请选(A),错误请选(B)。

              (1) Many guests like to use disposable things because they are very convenient (方便的).

              A. 正确    B. 错误

              (2) Some Beijing hotels have no longer provided guests with free TV programs.

              A. 正确    B. 错误

              (3) Plastic breaks down easily.

              A. 正确    B. 错误

              (4) After using a plastic bowl or a bag, we’d better throw it away, because it’s too dirty to use again.

We all know that the British people love their manners. They are part of their national identity (特性), as well as having fish and chips and complaining about the weather. Recently I read online that they said “sorry” up to eight times a day.

After some researchI have not been able to find any specific reasons why they are like this. I suppose, for centuries, manners, including how they behave at table and talk to other people have been one of the differences between the lower and upper classes and those manners show their social classes. Britain has traditionally been a quite conservative (保守的) country. There are many articles suggesting that their seemingly polite attitude of always saying “please” and “thank you” is quite false because it is impossible for a person to always feel that he or she wants to thank someone or say “please”.

Maybe it is forthis reason that people are going one of two ways: they are too polite and hold back their feelings or they are not polite at all and express their true feelings directly. Some British people are tired of pretending that they are always happy and having to please others. But sometimes because they feel they have to be polite, they are prevented from saying what they truly think.

              (1) What don’t the British people often do?
              A. Eat fish and chips.
              B. Have no quite good manners.
              C. Be polite to others.
              D. Talk about the weather.
              (2) What do the British people say up to eight times every day?
              A. Hello. B. Thank you. C. I don’t know. D. Sorry.
              (3) What doesthe writer think are the reasons why the British people are so polite?

① The upper classes should have good manners.

② They have learned much about politeness at school.

③ They like to hold back their true feelings.

④ They are not honest at all.

              A. ①② B. ③④ C. ①③ D. ②④
              (4) What is the best title of this passage?
              A. British people are too polite
              B. British people should not be so polite
              C. How to learn the British manners
              D. It’s time to change our manners

Many people travel to different places in the world by air. Usually it takes a long time, perhaps half a day, for passengers to stay in the plan. So airlines(航空公司)offer passengers food. But it is common that they feel bad about food taste. Do you agree?

To solvethis problem, airlines try hard to improve their food. They would like to do so because they don’t want to lose customers.

However, according to scientific research, part of the reason why plane food tastes bad is that at high altitude(海拔)we can not taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists have found that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off. As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure(气压)reduces one third of the sensibility(感觉)of our taste buds(味蕾). So our taste buds become senseless. The sad face, however, is that our noses don’t know it.

All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad. They also help explain why airlines choose to offer passengers salty and spicy(辛辣的)food. Without doing so, the food would be tasteless.

Now there are many researches on this. According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. And scientists write down their feelings about food taste.

Though scientists try their best, it is not as easy as they thought. Because they can’t deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure, making food taste good is still hard for them.

              (1) In Paragraph 2, “this problem” means ______.
              A. passengers stay long in the plane
              B. food on the plane tastes bad

              D. food on the plane is expensive
              (2) What do airlines do to solve this problem?

              B. Offer more food.
              C. Improve their food.
              D. Reduce the ticket price.
              (3) As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure reduces         of the sensibility of our taste buds.

Car-hailing company DiDi signed an agreement with TAL Education Group to provide free online courses for the children of taxi drivers. The courses, worth 3 0 million yuan, cover all subjects from primary to high school. Children can study courses at home, saving parents’ time to spend or pick up children from off-line after-school classes.

According to Zhu Jingshi, vice president of DiDi, all 153 million registered (注册) taxi drivers of DiDi can ask for the courses on the company’s mobile app. The car-hailing company will evaluate (评价) the drivers and provide courses on the basis of the time they became registered drivers with the company, the number of passengers served and evaluation from passengers.

The health and education of children have remained top priorities(优先权) of Chinese parents, including taxi drivers. A survey done by DiDi and TAL showed that although the average monthly income (平均月收入) of taxi drivers is only 6000 yuan, many would like to pay 40 percent of their income for their children’s education.

The survey found that most taxi drivers were born in the 1970s and 1980s and worked seven days a week. There is an old Chinese saying, “If someone gives you a little drop of water, you should return a spring of water.”That means if someone helps you a bit, you should remember it and thank them gratefully(感激的)in return.

We should live in a world of gratitude. We should prove it with actions, not just words. We thank people who hurt us, because they teach us important things. We thank people who give us up, because we learn how to be independent. We thank people who selfish(自私的),because we learn the importance of being kind. Of course, we should thank people who help us. We should thank people who teach us. We should thank people who care about us.

We thank our parents. They work hard all the time in order to give their sons and daughters a better life. They cook meals for us, they do the chores for us, they always give us food and clothes, they teach us what is right and what is wrong.

We thank our teachers who give us dreams. They teach us a lot of things but they ask for nothing from us. We are well-educated of them.

There are a lot of people that we should be grateful to in our life. We should find a way to thank them.
