(2016年贵州毕节)What do you think of celebrating Christmas Day in China? Christmas Day is very popular in China, especially for young people. Should Chinese people celebrate Christmas Day? 60% people think that we should not take Christmas so seriously, 10% think everyone should celebrate Christmas.

Some people think celebrating Christmas Day can help them understand western culture better. Some people think it is a great holiday to have a good time with their families and friends. During Christmas Day, they can meet friends, go shopping, watch movies and go to different parties.

But I have different ideas. Most of us celebrate Christmas just because we see many people around us do it.

China has its own holidays, such as the Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Day, so we don't have to celebrate holidays from other countries. Some people spend a lot of money celebrating Christmas Day. People buy lots of gifts for their friends and families, but this is not the best way to show their love.

Some teenagers can have a good time during their vacation, but some of them have part-time jobs because they want to increase their pocket money. And most of their parents allow them to do so.

In my opinion, this is not a bad thing. But I think teenagers should not have part-time jobs until they are sixteen years old. Parents should not allow their children to work under this age and no one is willing to hire(雇用) a child under this age.

A job is necessary in life. But before we learn to make money, we should first get a good education and we must get the education from the school and our families until a certain age. We can’t teach ourselves if we are only eight or nine years old. Besides, we should also learn how to spend money wisely. We can’t have a kind of “measure” of spending money if we don’t make it.

On the other hand, having a part-time job makes us get in touch with different people. We will learn how to be more patient with others and with life itself.

Do your parents ever say, “act like a lady” or “be a gentleman” to you? But in the eyes of today’s teenagers, what should a lady or a gentleman be like? Let’s take a look.

What is a gentleman? The girls have their ideas:

Huang Xiaoyu of Guizhou: A gentleman doesn’t always get angry. He wants others to be well and happy. He is always ready to help. There is a boy in my class and I think he is a gentleman. If I don’t do well in the English exam, he will say, “You will do better next time.” That makes me feel happy.

Chen Tingting of Shenzhen: A gentleman always says, “Ladies first” When students clean up the classroom, he does the heavy work. He lets girls go into rooms first. There are no gentlemen in my class. When there is something to eat, the boys in my class always get them before girls!

What is a lady? Boys tell us what they think a lady is:

Wu Yifan of Dalian: A lady is quiet and kind, but she’s not shy (害羞) and she can talk about her ideas in front of others. To me, Dong Jie, a film star, is a lady. She is pretty and kind. She does a lot for others.

Wang Lichao of Tianjin: A lady is not just beautiful but clever. She never says bad words. She is quiet and kind to others. I don’t think there is a lady in my class. Most of the girls are “wild beauties”, I think.

Many people like to watch TV. Watching TV is one of the most important activities of the day. TV brings the outside closer to people's homes. Some people say the world is smaller than before because of TV. What's going on in the other countries? How do people live in places far away? Is there a good sports game somewhere? What's life in the deepest part of the sea?

If you want to answer these and other kinds of questions, just turn on the TV. Turn it on and watch. You can see a lot and learn a lot. Of course, people can also learn through reading or listening to the radio. But with TV they can learn better and more easily. Why? Because they can hear and watch, too.

TV helps to open our eyes. TV also helps to open our minds. TV often gives us new ideas. We learn newer and better ways of doing something.

Parents now need tobribechildren to make them read at bedtime, a new survey said. Rewards include late bedtime, sweets and chocolate, and trips to parks and zoos.

Teachers are also offering rewards, with nearly eight in ten saying they give stickers and three in ten promising creative activities, such as drawing or painting for extra reading time. Over a quarter of 251 primary teachers and 501 parents of three-to-eight-year-olds showed.

Marie Jones, a mother of three, said, “Something I've always been a bit strict about is getting my kids to read but it hasn't been easy. I have to bribe them to read and for my youngest right now. I would bribe her with life experiences such as going to see a show, going to the theatre, going to a

country house or afternoon tea. And a good bribe works wonders.”

Helen Parker, one publisher, said, “In a time when there are so many digital(数码) things, parents have to bribe their children to pick up a book with promises of late bedtime, trips out and even money and sweets. We need books that are up to date, exciting and attractive so that children want to spend time reading.”

Parents and teachers also questioned the quality of the books for their children at school. More than a third said that the books were “unimaginative”, “outdated and old-fashioned” or “boring”. Teachers said children were losing interest in reading because of “boring storylines, out-of-date content(内容), simple characters and a lack(缺乏) of humor.”

The research also showed that children who read with their parents most nights are ahead of their classmates who do not. Nearly a third of teachers said that pupils who do not read often with their parents are likely to always remain behind pupils who do.

Researchers found children who are taught where to put the stress(重) in words and sentences can have a “great influence” on their reading progress.

Many teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members, especially (特别是) their parents, don’t know them as well as their friends do. In large families, it is quite often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for advice.

It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or a circle of friends. Even when they are not with their friend, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication(交流) is very important in children’s growing up, because friends can discuss something ,these things are difficult to say to their family members. However, parents often try to choose their children’s friends for them. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends.

The question of “choice” is an interesting one. Have you ever thought of the following questions? Who chooses your friends? Do you choose your friends or your friends choose you? Have you got a good friend you parents don’t like? Your answers are welcome.

Without proper planning, tourism(旅游业) can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They began to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country’s economy. It is important to think about the local people and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty than attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the wealth and happiness of local inhabitants.

Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means more other parts of the country’s economy can suffer.

On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, first-class roads, and other support facilities(设施)needed by tourist attractions.

For example, a major international class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying: Friends are God's way of taking care of us. But how do you find real friendship and keep it?

The Care and Keeping of Friends by American writer Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways to find friends. Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed and take care of it to make it grow.

First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints(抱怨) and do their best to help. To make a friend, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives.

But things cannot always be happy. Even the best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to them. When there is no one around, have a talk. If he or she doesn't want to talk, you could write a letter.

Sally says there are three steps to be friends again: Tell him or her how you are feeling; say what your friend has done wrong, and explain why you did this or that. The book also has advice on some small but important things like celebrating your friends' success Even if you haven't had a real friend before, you will start to think of having one if you read this book. Because the book tells that friendship is the most important thing in your life.

Where Are We Going, Dad?is one of the most popular television shows in China now. Fathers now take an active part in their children’s lives.

Five well-known fathers and their children travel around China, riding camels through the westerndeserts (沙漠), fishing in the east sea, and selling vegetables to get money back home in the southwestern Yunnan Province. One dad doesn’t know how to do his daughter’s hair, but he learns quickly and does it well now. Another one must stay with his son for three days in thedesert, because he and his son don’t know how to cook, the two only eat instant (即食) noodles.

This show raises an important question for modern Chinesesociety(社会) —what is the role(角色)of fathers in today’s China? In the old days, children must obey parents’ wishes and look after them in their old age. But Chinese parents now think that discussing and respecting (尊重) their children’schoicesmay be a better way to prepare them for modernsociety. “As they raise their children, parents are growing up at the same time,” said Wang Renping.
