Have you ever read stories of Sherlock Holmes---a famous detective? Here is one of his cases.
Stapleton, Charles' younger brother, found that he would inherit (继承) the Baskerville lands if Charles and his nephew(侄子) ---Henry both died.
Charles who had a weak heart believed super natural stories. After knowing this, Stapleton had the idea of buying a huge hound, and of using the phosphorus(磷) to make it shine like the hound in one story.
Then Stapleton asked his friend Laura to write a letter to bring Charles to the moor gate on that sad night. The hound, which was shining with phosphorus, chased Charles down the Yew Alley. Charles' fear was so great that his weak heart stopped, and he died but the animal did not touch the dead body. There was no sign of murder. It was difficult for Holmes to fine the murderer.
Two weeks later, Stapleton learned that Henry had reached England. He took his wife and the hound with him. He wore a false beard and followed Henry in London. He wanted to use the same way to murder Henry there. He needed something to give the hound Henry's smell, so he paid a woman at Henry's hotel to steal one of his shoes. The first one was a new one, which was no use for the hound, so it was put back. And then another older shoe was stolen. Before he was ready to murder Henry, he wasn't sure if his wife would keep his secret, so he did not tell her the truth. He locked her up in their hotel. She knew that he must have some evil plans. She sent Henry a letter which was made of words cut from a newspaper.
After receiving the letter, Henry realized he was in great danger and it must have something to do with his uncle Charles' death. So he asked Holmes for help.

Zhou Youguang is often considered as the "father of Pinyin". He created the writing system that turns Chinese characters into words using letters from the Roman alphabet. He died at the age of 111.
Mr. Zhou, who was born in 1906during the Qing Dynasty, studied in China's first Western-style university, St. John's in Shanghai, where he studied economics and linguistics. As a young man, Mr. Zhou spent time in the US and worked as a Wall Street banker and had several chats with Albert Einstein, according to New York Times. He returned to China in 1949and was given a task to create a new writing system using the Roman alphabet to help increase literacy.
Mr. Zhou spent three years developing the Pinyin system in the 1950s. It changed the way the language was taught and helped raise literacy rates(识字率). "We spent three years developing Pinyin. People made fun of us, joking that it had taken us a long time to deal with just 26letters," he told the BBC in 2012. He is the man who helped simplify Chinese.
Before Pinyin was developed, 85% of Chinese people could not read, now almost all can. It is also widely used to type Chinese characters on computers and smart phones. Now mobile phones and computers regularly use it for Chinese text input. "In the era(时代) of mobile phones and globalization, we use Pinyin to communicate with the world. Pinyin is opening up the doors to the world," Zhou told NPR.

From my father I have learned a lot. And I'm very thankful to him. I remember when I was a child, my father always got up very early, quietly putting on his clothes and going off to work. To arrive in time to open his tiny store at 8:30, he needed to leave our home at 6:30. After all, he had to take a bus and then the subway. The last journey was a long walk through a neighborhood much of which was full of the smell of rubbish. I learned: it is very important to work. No excuse.
When I was 12, I would, on some Saturdays, go to my father's store to help out. After helping set up the outside clothing display, for the rest of the day, I'd watch to make sure no one stole anything. When I noticed someone looking unusual or strange, I would look the person in the eyes, smile and say, "May I help you?" Usually that worked, but sometimes, someone would run off with something. The first time, I ran after the thief (贼) but my father shouted, "Martin, stop! There is no need to do that." It's true that safety is more important than money.
After 10years of hard work, he saved up enough money to buy his first car, a cheap one-he wouldn't buy one until he could afford to pay for it without borrowing money. I learned: buy only what you can afford. Buying necessary food and clothing won't make us go in debt (债务). The unnecessary things won't give us happiness, which comes from achievement only.

On Thursday October 3, Adam Harper decided to stop drinking coffee. Adam is a MBA student at Harvard University. He studies long hours, gets very little sleep, so he drinks a lot of coffee-anywhere from five to six cups a day. Recently, Adam felt that drinking thus much coffee was making it hard for him to sleep at all. He also began having problems with his concentration(注意力), and complained of stomachaches. Adam's doctor made this suggestions: stop drinking coffee altogether.
When Adam got up on October 3, he began his day without his morning coffee. By 11:00a.m., Adam was in a terrible mood. He was tired and had a headache. At 11:30, he had a meeting with his student advisor. In the meeting, he found it almost impossible to continue. What was going on?
Caffeine, a chemical found in coffee, was most likely the reason for how Adam felt. Caffeine is a stimulant that boosts(增加) energy levels and improves concentration- but only for a short time. Lowering caffeine consumption(减少摄取咖啡因) often makes a drop in blood pressure and the result is a "coffee headache". People who stop drinking coffee often say they feel tired and moody, and find it hard to focus.
The good news is that these feeling usually pass after four and five days. During this time, doctors suggested taking some aspirin for the headache. So, if Adam can wait, in less than a week, he may be feeling much better.

              (1) We learn from the reading Adam ______ .
              A. does researches on caffeine
              B. can never be feeling better
              C. still drinks 5to 6cups of coffee a day
              D. had some problems because of coffee
              (2) How may people feel when they stop drinking coffee? ______
              A. healthier
              B. uneasy
              C. energetic
              D. awaken
              (3) The good news shows that ______ .
              A. coffee can never cause headaches
              B. aspirin can stop us thinking coffee
              C. more and more people will give up coffee
              D. Adam will be better if he stops drinking coffee

When US teenager Jake Olson isn't playing football or golf for his high school, he's often offering inspiration(灵感)through his new book about his own life.
These activities might be too much for the average 16-year-old to deal with, but Jake is blind. When people ask him how he can possibly play golf without being able to see the ball, he says he is thankful for his father's guidance.
It seems apparent that his early experience playing sports as a person with sight and muscle(肌肉) memory- repeating behaviors over and over until they become second nature - have also enabled Jake to hit the ball quite well.
Jake was born with a rare kind of eye cancer that took away the vision from his left eye when he was a baby and eventually his right eye, in 2009, when he was 12years old. Rather than letting the disease hold him back, Jake used his loss of sight and his faith as sources of motivation(动力)."If I was going to sit on the couch all day, feeling sorry for myself, I wasn't going to do anything. I decided that I was going to go out and persevere (坚持不懈)." he said.
It was with that mind-set that the student from Orange Lutheran High School in California was able to write his first book, Open Your Eyes: 10Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life. "It's about opening the readers' eyes to their true talent in life and making sure that they use all the abilities that they have," Jake said.
Jake's father, Brian Olson, said the family is impressed with what he has done with his life, including showing people that they can get through hardships. "Your darkest hour can soon become your brightest, and with every setback, there's a setup," Jake said. "In every one of us, there's more potential than we can ever imagine, and it really is a choice."

              (1) We can learn from the article that Jake Olson ______ .
              A. was born with blindness
              B. has great muscle memory

              D. is trying to find the cure for his disease
              (2) According to the article, Jake's family members ______ .
              A. have pity on him deeply
              B. once gave up hope on him
              C. encouraged him to write the book
              D. admire his efforts and determination(决心)
              (3) The purpose of the book Open Your Eyes: 10Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life is to ______ .
              A. explain what "a happier life" means

              B. help people get better life through his experiences
              C. encourage people to discover and use the potential
              (4) The underlined word "setback" is closest in meaning to ______ .
              A. failure
              B. fight
              C. idea
              D. success

The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy, asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his legs. And then, he said to the reporter, "Look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my Mom wouldn't let go."

Jo said sadly,"We haven't got Father, and shall not have him for a long time."She didn't say"perhaps never",but each silently added it,thinking of Father far away, where the fighting was.
Nobody spoke for a minute; then Meg said,"You know the reason why Mother asked us not to have any presents this Christmas was that it is going to be a hard time for everyone; and she thinks we ought not to spend money for pleasure when our men are suffering in the army."
"We've each got a dollar, and the army wouldn't be much helped by our giving that.I agree not to ask anything from Mother or you,but I do want to buy Undine and Sintram for myself; I've wanted it so long,"said Jo,who was a bookworm.
"I planned to spend mine on new-music,"said Beth.
"I shall get a nice box of drawing pencils; I really need them,"said Amy decidedly.
"Mother didn't say anything about our money, and she won't wish us to give up everything.Let's each buy what we want, and have a little fun; I'm sure we work hard enough to earn it,"cried Jo.
