Chinese writer Mo Yan is famous all over the world, but do you know Anna Gustafsson Chen, his Swedish translator(翻译家)?

Chen was born in 1965 in Sweden. ①她很小的时候就开始学习汉语。 Now she is quite good at Chinese. She has been translating (翻译) Chinese books into Swedish for more than 20 years. By the year of 2012, she had translated 20 Chinese novels (小说). She has finished translating Mo Yan’s Red Sorghum, The Garlic Ballads and Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out. She has also translated books from other famous Chinese writers, for example, Yu Hua’s To Live and Su Tong’s Wives and Concubines. Chen has won the Swedish Academy Translation Award for her work.

Chen first read Mo Yan’s novel Red Sorghum in the early 1990s. “I read Ge Haowen’s English translation in a bookstore. I found it interesting so later bought the Chinese version and tried to translate it. It took me a long time, because it was not my professional job. I had to translate it only in my free time,” Chen says.

Though Mo Yan wrote the first draft (初稿) of Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out in only 43 days, Chen spent six years translating it.

The famous scientist and thinker, Charles Darwin, was born on February 12, 1809. His family lived not far from the River Severn, England.

Charles’ father was a well-known doctor and the son of a still greater doctor and scientist. Charles’ father hoped that his son would also become a doctor.

 As a boy, Charles liked to go for walks in the fields and forests. He watched nature and compared what ha saw with everything he had read in science books. He also liked collecting very much. He collected many things: eggs, stones, and leaves. His father did not like this: As Charles was not studying very well at school.

When he returned home, his family and friends greeted him.

In 1842, Darwin went to live in Kent, where he went on his studied of the changes in nature.2Darwin understood that plants and animals are not always the same, and they really change.

By 1859, Darwin finished his famous book The Origin Of  Species. It  made a great hit in the world of science.3 The church and some scientists opposed (反对)him. But later, more and more scientists agreed with him.

There was a tree in my garden. One day, two birds came to build a house there for their three newborn babies.

    One day, I heard the sound of the little birds. ① I ran to the garden and found two babies eating food on the ground. I thought they dropped off their house, so I decided to help them get back to their house. At that time, the father bird and the mother bird came back. They had some food for the third baby. They put the food on the ground, far away from the bird baby. To get the food, the baby had to fly to it.

    Then I heard the cry of the third baby. She was still in their house. She was afraid to get out of the house to get the food. But she was very hungry. To my surprise, the father bird and the mother bird just stood there and did nothing.

    After about ten minutes, the third baby didn’t have any other choice. She slowly want to the border(边缘) of the house and began to fly. She flew off from the house. Finally, the third baby landed on the ground and found the food.
