"How are you?" is a nice question. It's a friendly way that people in the USA greet each other. But "How are you?" is also a very unusual question. It's a question that often doesn't need an answer. The person who asks "How are you?" hopes to hear the answer "Fine", even if the person's friend isn't fine. The reason is that "How are you?" isn't really a question and "Fine" isn't really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying "Hello" or "Hi".

Sometimes, people also don't say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks, "Do you agree?" the other person might think, "No, I disagree. I think you're wrong..." But it isn't very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say, "I'm not sure." It's a nicer way to say that you don't agree with someone.

People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says "I've to go now." Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse: "Someone's at the door." "Something is burning on the stove." The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person.

Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people don't say exactly what they are thinking. It's an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it's part of the rule of the game of language.

In May, 2016, a kite exhibition called Flying High opened in Macao. At the exhibition, all the eyes were on a huge dragon-shaped kite.

The kite won the top prize for innovation (创新) at the 33rd Weifang International Kite Festival in 2016. The dragon head of the kite was 3 metres long and the body of the kite was l,000 metres long. The body carried scenes from the ancient Silk Road. It was easily among the top draw at the Flying High exhibition.

27-year-old Wang Zheng is a young kite-maker from Weifang, Shandong. He was among the 10 people who had spent a month making the kite. Wang explained, “In ancient China, three had the meaning of ‘many’. So a 3-metre-long dragon head is a symbolof long-lasting success.” Wang learned to make kites from his mother. He hopes to keep the tradition of handmade kites alive. “Kite-making techniques (手法) have been handed down for several hundred years. As a young person of Weifang, I think I should pass on these techniques. Although (虽然) the process (过程) of learning might sometimes seem rather boring and difficult, someone has to do it,” said Wang.

Wang also wants to encourage more young people to experience (体验) kite flying. He said, “Though the kite is tiny, it can have the whole sky as its playing field.”

Usually we all go to a store to buy something we need. But today we always want to buy new things through the information from advertising and sometimes from TV show. Itˈs quite different from the past.

In fact, people have been advertising for thousands of years. Long ago, some men called“criers(叫卖人)”walked up and down the street. They shouted about things that were being sold. Later, people met at one place. This place was a market. Some people came to sell. Other people came to buy. But only those people who were at the market knew what were being sold. When people learned about printing, things changed. Soon there were newspapers. Many people read the newspapers. They saw many ads in the papers. Later more people saw and listened to the ads on TV.

Erasers and pencils are good friends. But the pencil came first. A long time ago, when people needed to erase pencil marks(标记), they used bread.

On April 15th,1770, a British scientist named Joseph Priestley saw rubber could erase pencil marks easily.

In the same year, Edward Naime invented (发明)the first rubber eraser. He was a British engineer. One day, he erased something with rubber instead of bread. He found it was very useful. Then he began to sell rubber erasers.

But rubber, like bread, would go bad over time. In 1839, Charles     Goodyear made rubber erasers last(持续)longer.

In 1858, an American Hymen Lipman put erasers on the ends of pencils. We still use this kind of eraser today.

Did you know? There is a Rubber Eraser Day. It’s a day to celebrate the invention of erasers. It falls on April 15th every year.

Garden building is considered an important part of Chinese culture. Some people say that if you have never walked through a Chinese garden, you cannot say that you have really visited China.

Traditional Chinese gardens are located in North China in such places as Beihai Park, the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City. In larger imperial gardens, the main buildings are connected by an imaginary line in the middle of the garden on the north-south axis. Other features of imperial gardens are colored-paintings, man-made hills and lakes.

Most private gardens are found in the south, especially in cities south of the Yangtze River. Private gardens were mostly built at one side or at the back of the houses. Around the beautiful scene are small open areas with beautiful shaped-doors through which visitors can enjoy the sights. They are open on all sides and are often near the water so that the whole scene can be enjoyed. Suzhou, known as the home of gardens, displays the most and the best Chinese traditional private gardens. Different parts of it are examples of the garden style of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.[

The landscape garden contains a number of pleasant natural scenes and some fairy tales. The ancient Chinese used to call the garden landscape “Jing” , which means “scene” in English. Good examples include the ten West Lake Scenes in Hangzhou, the twenty-four slim West Lake in Yangzhou and the eight Daming Lake Scenes in Jinan.

In the United States, every year, Thanksgiving Day is on the fourth Thursday of November. Canada also has the Thanksgiving Day.                In the United States, sixteen, eighteen, and twenty—one are important ages in a person's life. There are no special celebrations for these birthdays, but each is a time when a person can do new things. After turning sixteen a person can work, get a driver's license and leave home. Many high school students learn to drive and get part - time jobs soon after celebrating their sixteenth birthday. At the age of eighteen a person in the United States can vote and smoke, but they are not allowed to buy wine until they are twenty - one.

In many Latin (拉丁的) cultures, a young woman's fifteenth birthday is important. At this age, she is regarded as an adult. To mark this special day, families with teenage daughters have a celebration called a Quinceanera. The day begins with the young woman and her family going to church. Later, there is a party and many guests are invited.

In Japan, young people become adults at twenty. At this age, they can vote, drink wine and smoke. The second Monday in January is a national holiday called "Coming of Age Day". On this day, twenty -year -olds celebrate by first going to a church to pray with their families. Later, they listen to speeches given by city and school leaders. Afterward, many celebrate with family or friends late into the night.
