If you donˈt love yourself first, how can you confidently give and receive love? Only when we fully realize who we are and accept ourselves, can we understand the love of someone else.

So letˈs start with some questions by asking yourself. Who are you deep down inside? What are your goals, strengths, clever ideas, likes and dislikes? What do you need to control your weaknesses and improve your growth?

Self-discovery can be scary, because most people consider themselves to be unimportant. They would rather become dependent than depend on their own. Is that true in your case?

Loving yourself influences your life. It influences whom you choose to fall in love with and your action in the relationship. lf there is no self-esteem (自尊), there will be no love.

A person with high self-esteem is responsible for himself or herself, no matter how much love and care there is between that person and others. Such a person is not waiting to be saved and will not place unnecessary dependence on others. He or she is confident of his or her own ability, value and mind. He or she remembers that he or she is the prize.

A person with high self-esteem depends on his or her own happiness, rather than looking for

someone else to make him or her happy. Happiness is an "inside" job. When you accept this responsibility for yourself, you build self-esteem, and then you receive love.

“Have a nice day!”may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.

“Have a nice day. Next!”This version of expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same tone (腔调) with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase the business.

The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression serves us when we don’t know what to say. “Oh, you just had a tooth out? I’m terribly sorry, but have a nice day.”

The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day” to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you.

Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it’s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don’t care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.

              (1) How does the author understand Maxie’s words?

              A. Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.

              B. Maxie really wishes the author a good day.

              C. Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.

              D. Maxie really worries about the author’s security.

              (2) What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?

              A. The salesgirl is polite.
              B. The salesgirl is bored.

              C. The salesgirl cares about me.
              D. The salesgirl says the words as a routine (常规)

              (3) By saying “Have a nice day,” a stranger may ______.

              A. try to be polite to you

              B. express respect to you

              C. give his blessing to you

              D. share his pleasure with you

              (4) What is the best title of the passage?

              A. Have a Nice Day—a Social Custom

              B. Have a Nice Day—a Pleasant Gesture

              C. Have a Nice Day—a Heart-warming Greeting

              D. Have a Nice Day—a Polite Ending of a Conversation

For some people, music is no fun at all. About 4% of the population is what scientists call “amusic.” People who are amusic are born without the ability to enjoy musical notes(音调). Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two songs.

As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. In fact, most people cannot understand what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping center can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics have to stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in social loneliness. “I used to hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify(辨别) this unusual condition.

Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from those of people who can enjoy music. The difference is complex(复杂的), and it is not connected with poor hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding common speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can’t see certain colors.

Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed (诊断). For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say, “No, thanks. I’m amusic,” says Margaret.

              C. Studying amusic people.
              D. Comparing music to color.
              (3) What causes amusics different from most people according to scientists?
              A. Their brains.
              B. Their poor hearing

              D. Their problems with speech.

Everyone has a beautiful memory about school which is hard to forget. Among many things, relationships are the hardest to leave behind. Some schools try to stop students’ puppy love (初恋)in different ways. Anything about “love” relationship is not allowed. For example, a middle school in Fu’an, Fujian Province forbids (禁止) boys and girls to sit together for meals and forbids boys to look at girls for a long time; a middle school in Luohe, Henan Province sets rules that boys and girls should meet in bright places with at least 5 other classmates, and if they meet in private they will be asked to go home with parents for more than a week and even advised to leave school; a middle school in Jinan, Shandong Province forbids everyone to send food and gifts to or receive them from the opposite sex (异性). It also forbids students to help the opposite sex with bags and coats and requires a “44 cm” distance between boys and girls.
Some students are not satisfied with such rules. “Why should we have strict places for different sexes to eat? It’s not using bathrooms!” Some people who care about the intelligence development of the students say that they should be more creative with fewer rules. For this, I’d like to say that middle school students are going through puberty (青春期). It’s normal for them to have some feelings for the opposite sex. Schools should provide correct guidance and education instead of giving simple and cruel rules and asking the students to follow.

Music is an important part of our life. But recently, to cut the spending, some US schools have given up music classes. Chicago public schools fired(解雇) more than 1,000 teachers. Ten percent of them taught Art or Music.

In fact, that is not just a problem in the USA. In other countries, such asChinaand Britain, Music isn’t thought so important as Science, Math or History, either. That’s because music isn’t seen as a very important life skill, and students usually needn’t take any exams in Music. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so they choose to care about subjects that are tested often.

However learning music is useful in many ways. According to an early childhood music development program, performing music isn’t so simple as it looks. When performing music, people need different abilities to work together. While playing the piano, they see music notes and use their fingers to make sounds. They need to deal with all these things at the same time. They need attention and coordination(协调) of many senses. Music is also connected with science closely. As we all know, many scientists are good at playing music. For example, Einstein played the violin well, and German physicist Max Planck was interested in playing the piano, cello and pipe organ(管风琴).

Would you like to learn music? The most valuable thing music does is to enrich your hobbies and bring you lots of pleasure.

Car-hailing company DiDi signed an agreement with TAL Education Group to provide free online courses for the children of taxi drivers. The courses, worth 3 0 million yuan, cover all subjects from primary to high school. Children can study courses at home, saving parents’ time to spend or pick up children from off-line after-school classes.

According to Zhu Jingshi, vice president of DiDi, all 153 million registered (注册) taxi drivers of DiDi can ask for the courses on the company’s mobile app. The car-hailing company will evaluate (评价) the drivers and provide courses on the basis of the time they became registered drivers with the company, the number of passengers served and evaluation from passengers.

The health and education of children have remained top priorities(优先权) of Chinese parents, including taxi drivers. A survey done by DiDi and TAL showed that although the average monthly income (平均月收入) of taxi drivers is only 6000 yuan, many would like to pay 40 percent of their income for their children’s education.

The survey found that most taxi drivers were born in the 1970s and 1980s and worked seven days a week. More than 70 percent of them have children under 18 but very few have time to be with family and children. Only 8 percent of them said they had guided their children in doing homework. Because of these, 60 percent of drivers hope their children could re ceive the guidance from professional services.
