Are you the first or the last child in your family? Or are you a middle or an only child? Some people think it matters about the birth order in the family. But there are different    (1)    (idea) about what birth order means. Some people say that the oldest children   (2)   (be) smart and strong-willed. They are very likely    (3)    (succeed). The reason for this is simple. Parents have a lot of time for their first child   (4)    give him or her a lot of attention. An only child will succeed for   (5)    same reason. What happens to the other children in the family? Middle children don't get so much attention, so they don't feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle one sometimes gets lost  in the crowd. The youngest child, however, often gets special attention. Often this child grows up to be happy.

But a recent study saw things quite differently. The study found that the first children believed in family rules. They didn't take many chances in their life. They usually followed orders. But rules didn't mean as much to the other children in the family. They took chances and they often did better in life.

Can music help you concentrate on work?    (1)

The study from the University of Wales Institute examined the ability of 25 students.

                      (2)  In one task they had to remember a list of eight consonant letters (辅音字母).

The students in the study were tested under three different conditions: in a quiet environment, while listening to music they liked, and while listening to music they didn't like.     (3)  The background music seemed to make memorization more difficult. However, scientists also found that listening to music before doing the tests seemed to help improve concentration.

"Although they listened to their self-selected music, their performance was poor, just as it was when they listened to music they disliked," explained one of the researchers.     (4)

As a part of this research, the students were asked about their study habits.     (5)

So, if you are studying for an exam, turn off your music!
