One day, a baby snail(蜗牛) found that he had to carry a big and heavy shell(壳) at any time.He was confused(困惑的), so he went up to his mother and asked, “ Why was I born with a shell that grew so hard and heavy?” His mother said, “Because we don’t have bones(骨头) to hold us up.We can only move slowly, so we need a shell to protect us.”

The baby snail asked again, “The caterpillar(毛毛虫) has no bones, either, and she can’t move quickly. Why can she live without a shell?” The mother snail answered, “That’s because a caterpillar will become a butterfly. She can fly high into the sky.The sky can protect her.”

The baby snail had one more question, “But the earthworm(蚯蚓) moves like us.He has no bones and he won’t turn into a butterfly. Why doesn’t he carry a hard and heavy shell?” His mother said, “He can dig a hole and hide in the ground, and then the earth can protect him.”

The baby snail then cried, “We are so poor! We have no protection from the sky or from the ground!” His mother smiled at him, “That’s why we have a shell. My dear, imagine that if we don’t have the shells, what will happen to us? Hot sun will dry out our bodies and we’ll have nowhere to sleep. What’s worse, we’ll die in the heavy rain. How terrible it is! We don’t depend on the sky or the ground for protection. We should depend on ourselves.”

              (1) Whom did the baby snail ask for help, his mother or father?

              (2) What will the caterpillar in the story become when he grows up?

              (3) Where can an earthworm hide?

              (4) Who should the snails depend on according to the story?

              (5) 将划线句子翻译为汉语

One day as I was sitting in a coffee shop, I noticed a girl working on her laptop. Two people (A)passed byand accidentally knocked over her drink. To avoid the embarrassment (尴尬), the girl pretended (假装) that (B) ___ had happened and continued working on her computer.

This reminded me that both in China and Britain, when something strange happens around you or when you are in an embarrassing situation, (C) people tend (倾向于) to use this common way not to catch other people’s attention.

A lot of the time, Britons(英国人)use self-depreciating humor (自嘲式的幽默). This is a well-known British characteristic (特色). For example, imagine walking (D) ___ your friends and you fall over. Your friend may just say (E)“旅途愉快!”Or you may just laugh about how clumsy (笨拙的) you are. For many Britons, making fun of yourself is a way of showing your strength of character.

Also, British are considerate when it comes to embarrassing others. For example, students (F)usuallyhave a birthday party every year. So during the school day, a student will give out invitations to the class. If one person doesn’t get an invitation, but the rest of the class do, he or she will feel embarrassed. To avoid it, it’s common for students to even invite people who aren’t (G)theirfriends.

My name is Mariusz Kedzierski and I’m 23-year-old Polish artist. Mostly, I make drawings. There is nothing special, except for one thing – I was born without arms.

But for me disability(残疾)doesn’t mean that I can’t live my own, great life. It doesn’t mean that I have to give up my dreams. Art has been my way of life for 7 years. Since that time I have drawn over 700 drawings that took me 15,000 hours. Thanks to my hard work and determination , I got 2nd prize “Best Global Artist” in Vienna in 2013. I participated in exhibitions in Cracow, Vienna, Oxford, Wroclaw and more.

Now I am travelling around the Europe, drawing on the streets of Berlin, London, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, and many other cities. I called this project ‘Mariusz Draws’. This way, I want to encourage all the people and tell them that all the limits are in our heads.

I am writing to my parents from the centre of Australia . At the moment , we are staying near Ayers Rock .On the first day , we took a plane tour over the rock , and I was surprised at how big it was : 3.6 kilometres long and 348 metres high! During different periods of the day , the colours of the rock turn dark blue , purple , yellow and red .

The Australians have a close relationship with the British . Many have British relatives , and they are like us in many ways . The foods that Australians like most are ham and beef with lots of salad . They also grow grapes and other fruits .They love all sports.( A)But the game that they like most is Australian football . Because most Australians live near the coast , they also love going to the beach for swimming and surfing or just lying in the sun .

(B)尽管是12月,但这里是夏季。The sun is very bright , and near the coast the countryside is very green . There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills , but the middle of the country has no trees or grass , just rocks and sand ...And kangaroos!

On the second day , we went horse riding . The horse that I rode was lazy , so I was left far behind the others . But I enjoyed the slow and relaxing ride .

Later this evening , we are taking the plane back to Sydney and coming home . It has been a wonderful trip .

(A)Children know that summer is probably the most fun of all seasons. However, experts(专家)say that it is also the most dangerous, especially for children aged 14 and under. In its first study of children’s safety in US, the National Safe Kids Campaign (NSKC) found that nearly half of the injury-related (与受伤相关的) deaths among children happen in summer.

Experts are also surprised by the study’s result. (B)They know summer is a dangerous season for children. During the summer, children are out of school and spend more time outdoors. They are more likely to get into an accident. “While we encourage(鼓励)children to be active(活跃的) and spend time outdoors, they need (C)_____(understand)the importance of safety,” said Everett Koop, an expert of the NSKC.

To help children stay safe, the NSKC started a “Make it a Safe Kids Summer” campaign (运动) during National Safe Kids Week, from May 5 to May 12. Here are some important summer safety tips from the NSKC:

               Always wear your seat belt.

○Make sure there is an adult around when you decide to go swimming.

              ○ (D)Wear a life jacket(救生衣)when on a boat doing water sports,

              ○Obey all traffic laws.
