AlphaGo is a computer program to play Go (围棋).It’s an AI program developed by Google DeepMind in London.

In the early days, AlphaGo could not win a single game, even against amateur (业余的) players. However,in recent years the AI program has developed fast. It is learning all the time.

In October 2015, AlphaGo beat European Go champion Fan Hui, a 2-dan professional (职业的) player.

The score was 5 to 0. Although Fan Hui is not a world- class player, the result of the game was greatly surprising. This was the first time that a computer Go program had beaten a professional human player without handicaps(让子).

In March 2016, Man vs. Machines Go was held in Seoul, South Korea. In the match, AlphaGo played against Lee Se-dol, a 9-dan professional player from South Korea. In the end, AlphaGo beat the world-class player Lee Se-dol. During the five-game match, AlphaGo won four matches, and only lost the fourth game. It has become the first computer program to beat a top-level Go player without handicaps. Now AlphaGo is the second inGo Rating (排名) of the world.

DeepMind developers hope Ke Jie will  take on AlphaGo in the next Man vs. Machines Go. Ke Jie, an eighteen-year-old boy from China, is the No.1 in Go Rating of the world now. He thinks AlphaGo can teach itself and develops better and better, but he believes he is the one to beat AlphaGo.

In the world, soccer (or football) is the most popular sport. This is because many countries have wonderful teams for the World Cup. The World Cup is held every four years.

To remember the 2002 FIFA World Cup, children from different countries and more than 60 children from different Japanese schools came together and spent three weeks drawing a big picture called“Dream (梦幻) World Cup”in Japan. The children drew animals, flowers and people playing soccer under bright blue sky. They wished each football team good luck by drawing the flags (旗帜) of all countries that would take part in the World Cup in Japan and South Korea. The picture was put up in a park near a playground in Yokohama.

Are you a football fan? The World Cup makes more and more people interested in football. Teenagers like playing and watching football. Many of them love some football stars so much that they get pictures of their favorite players such as, Figo, Oven and Pauleta. And they put the pictures up on the walls of their rooms. That is the way to show their love for the World Cup.

Wenlock and Mandeville are mascots(吉祥物)of the London Olympic Games.

Wenlock is the name of the English village(村) because many people think it is the birthplace(发源地)of the modern Olympics.

Mandeville is from the name of the village, Stoke Mandeville. The Paralympic Games(残奥会)began there.

You may want to know what they look like. They have only one eye each and the eye is a camera. They can use the camera to record

the people they meet, the places they go and the sports they try on their way to 2012. The pair don’t have feet.

The game’s organizers(组织者) hope the pair will make a lot of money and they say the mascots will be popular with kids. They

also think the children will see the mascots under their arms as wonderful toys.

Some people perhaps think the mascots look strange(奇怪). However, most children like Wenlock and Mandeville a lot.

It is often said that China is a developing country and the West is developed. However, China is trying her best to be “developed”. We can see her hard work in the following aspects(方面).

              Economics

China has had the fastest developing speed in economy(经济) for the last 30 years. Her growth in economy is 7%-9% each year.

              Roads and Railways(铁路)

By the year 2012, highway(高速公路) in China has been more than 96 000 kilometers. It has become the first in the world. China high-speed railway will be more than 170 000 kilometers by the end of 2015. China has already constructed(建设) the largest scale(规模) and the highest speed network of high-speed railway.

Developed World Service in a Developing Country

Most of China ’s visitors come from developed countries. China is trying to provide developed world service in a developing country. Though China won’t become developed in one day, she tries to make her service like that of a developed country. Welcome to China and enjoy her developed services!

Google developed a new photo app (应用程序)— Google Photos— for both the iPhone and Android. Recently, the app already has attracted (吸引) 200 million users. In an interview, Anil Sabharwal, who runs Google Photos, suggested ways Google Photos might continue to change and develop.

              Smarter Storage(存储)

One of the app’s main purposes is to help people back up (备份) all of their photos. What’s more, it automatically (自动地) deletes photos you’ve already backed up to free up (释放) space on your mobile phone.“For lots of our users this is so useful because they always run out of space on their mobile phones,” Sabharwal said.

Sabharwal also pointed to a future in which Google might use high technology to decide whether a photo needs to be backed up at all before it’s deleted.

              Google Assistant

Another important feature (特色) of Google Photos is Google Assistant. It will automatically find and group (分组) all your photos of beaches, for example. It will also group people together using face matching (人脸匹配) and people’s names. Then you can search“John at the beach” and find all your photos of John at the beach.

              Smarter Sharing

The last key feature of Google Photos is sharing. The feature is designed so that anyone you share photos with can, in a single click (点击), automatically add those photos to their own mobile phones. Photos can easily be shared to other apps and services, like Facebook or Gmail.

              Are Sports Important?

Sports are all around us. We watch and read sports news. There are also sports clubs, and even sports-only channels (频道) on TV. In many countries, players make millions of dollars every year.

But why are sports so important? They’re only games, right?

              Our readers answer:

              Vlad (Ukraine乌克兰)

Sports bring people together. In 2006, our team was able to play in the 2006 World Cup for the first time. Everyone was happy. Rich and poor, old and young, men and women—everyone was in the streets together!

              Mike ( U.S.A.)

Sports bring people together, but they divide them too. Fans of different teams fight all the time—they shout and hit each other. And here’s another example: My brother plays high school baseball. Last week, his team played an important game. At the game, two parents fought about a call. Come on … baseball is only a game! Sports are so competitive (有竞争力的) these days. It’s all about winning. Then the game isn’t fun.

              Oba ( South Africa)

Right now, some of the world’s best soccer players are from African countries, and the 2010 World Cup games will be held in South Africa. Yes, some players make a lot of money—maybe too much, but sporting events (like the World Cup) bring tourists to the countries where sporting events are held and money to the people in these countries. And that is good forAfrica.
