              Fried rice record spoiled

A group of chefs in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province, tried to cook the world’s largest serving of fried rice on October 22, 2015. The achievement set a new world record.

However, the chefs had little time to celebrate it. To their surprise, the honor was soon taken back. And they were criticized for wasting money and food—because the fried rice was finally used to feed pigs.

Around 300 chefs took part in the event. In all, they produced about 4,192 kilograms of fried rice, Yangzhou’s signature dish(招牌菜). The cooked rice looked delicious. It was full of carrots, peas, as well as large pieces of chicken, ham, shrimp. The record-breaking event was held to improve the image of Yangzhou and its local food among foreign tourists.

But the fried rice was not cooked for tourists or local residents at all. It was sent to pig farms shortly after the world record was announced. Photos and video clips on the Internet show the rice being loaded into several trash trucks.

Sharon Yang is the marketing director for Guinness China. He told reporters that the organizers of the event promised to send the rice to local canteens.“However,” Yang said, “it turned out that they failed to keep the promise. At least 150 kilograms of the fried rice was wasted. It couldn’t be eaten at all.”

“Although the achievement seemed great, it was against the Guinness’s moral standards,” Yang added. “So, we are not able to recognize the new record.”

Some local media reporters also criticized the event. “It is a shame to waste so much food for such a meaningless event,” said one of the reporters. “Don’t they know that many people in the mountainous regions(山区) hardly have enough to eat?”

              (1) Why did the chefs have little time to celebrate the honor of their achievement?

              (2) How much fried rice did the chefs produce?

              (3) How many kinds of ingredients did Yangzhou’s fried rice have?

              (4) The fried rice was not cooked for tourists or local residents, was it?

              (5) What did the organizers promise Sharon Yang to do?

Do you often put off doing something that you should be doing? It’s a bad habit called procrastination(拖延症). Most of the tasks that you procrastinate on aren’t actually difficult to do — you have the skills to complete them —you just don’t want to start them for one reason or another.

2-Minute Rule is a method of dealing with the problem and the goal is to make it easier for you to get started on the things you should be doing. It includes two parts. Part one comes from David Allen’s book, “Getting Things done ”. It’s surprising how many things we put off that we could get done in two minutes or less, for example, taking out the litter, cleaning up your desk and sending an email. If a take takes less than two minutes wo complete, then follow the rule and do it right now .

Can all of your goals be achieved in less than two minutes ? Of course not. But, every goal can be started in 2 minutes or less. And that’s the purpose behind the rule’s second part. Once you start doing something, it’s easier to continue doing it. The most important part of any new habit is getting started — not just the first time, but each time. I love the 2-Minute rule because it accepts the idea that all good things happen once you get started.

Want to become a better writer? Just write one sentence (2-Minute Rule), and you’ll be likely (可能的) to find yourself writing for an hour.

Want to make reading a habit ? Just read the first page of a new book (2-Minute Rule), and before you know it, you’ve read the first ten pages.

Use next 120 seconds wo get one thing done. Go!

(1)What can 2-Minute Rule help us to do? (不超过5个单词)

              ____________________________________________________________________

(2)Where dose the first part of 2-Minute Rule come from? (不超过10个单词)

Nathan Sawaya’s childhood was a lot of fun. He drew cartoon, wrote stories, and played with plastic toy bricks (积木). He got his first set of toy bricks from his grandparents at the age of five and he’s been building with toy bricks ever since. He even took his building bricks to college with him! Instead of books and a computer, he had a model of Greenwich Village made of bricks on his desk.

Nathan started as a lawyer but gave up his highly-paid job to become an artist that uses toys in his art. He uses toy bricks to build everything from the Statue of Liberty (自由女神像) to Superman! He has more than 1.5 million colored bricks in his working room in New York which he uses to make pieces of art. He started by building small models but then decided to do something big and created — a self-portrait (自画像). It took him two days just to build the eyes.

Nathan’s work has appeared in museums around the world. Children love his art because it is fascinating. Since it began in 2007, Nathan’s exhibition “The Art of the Brick” has been very popular with museum visitors everywhere.

“I’m proud that I took a dream I had as a child, to become an artist, and I have actually made a job out of it,” says Nathan. “To do what you love in life is the most important thing.”

Astronaut spends year in the ISS

Living in space is common to astronauts . But what if it is a task of a year?

US astronaut Scott Kelly was in the International Space Station(ISS) for 340 days. It was the longest time a US astronaut has spent in space at a time.

Kelly’s stay is part of the Twins(双胞胎) Study. When Scott spent a year in the ISS, and his twin brother Mark, lived on Earth. They gave scientists more ways to study human space flight.

Usually living in the ISS for such a long time is boring. Was it the same for Kelly? Let’s take a look!

              Good morning, everyone!

It’s time to enjoy a sunrise. But for Kelly, it was one of the 16 sunrises he saw each day in the ISS. Isn’t that cool?

              Work comes first.

During his stay, Kelly and his partners did about 400 science experiments. One of them was about planting vegetables. And they did it! Growing vegetables will be helpful for longer space journeys.

              Moving with microgravity(微重力).

As we all know, space is a place with microgravity, which influences(影响) human bodies. So Kelly did exercise more than 700 hours in the ISS. That is about two hours of exercise a day. Microgravity also makes some easy things difficult. Kelly often slept in a sleeping bag, or his arms would float(漂浮) in front of him all the time.

Boring? Why not do something fun?

Kelly loved taking photos from space and sharing them with the world online. Even President Obama is his fan. Under one of his photos, Obama wrote:“Hey, loving the photos. Do you ever look out of the window and just feel afraid?” “I don’t feel afraid about anything, Mr. President, except getting a question from you,” Kelly replied.

Answer the questions according to the passage.

Look around and you’ll see people busy on their smart phones(智能手机). Smart phones do make our lives easier than before. But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes?
According to a study, half of British people own smart phones and they spend an average of two hours a day using them. There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the UK who are shortsighted(近视) since smart phones were introduced there in 1997.
Looking at smart phones for a long time gives you dry eyes. When looking at something far away, your eyes automatically blink(自动眨眼) a certain number of times. However, when you look at things closer to your face, the blinking will slow down and this will be bad for eyes. Another bad habit is using smart phones in dark rooms before going to sleep. If you look at a bright screen, your pupils(瞳孔) will become larger and too much light will enter your eyes. This can do harm to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma(青光眼).
There are a few things you can do to protect your eyes. Hold your phone at least 30 centimeters away from your eyes when using it. Take a break every hour and try the following: look at something at least five meters from you and then try to look at the tip of your nose. Repeat this several times and it should reduce the discomfort in your eyes.

Although smart phones are useful, please use them in a right way.
