Many people run for exercise. But what will you do if you are not a "born" runner or jogger (慢跑者)? You may still want a kind of exercise that’s inexpensive and easy to do. Why not try walking?

Walking requires no special equipment (装备). It is a kind of exercise that almost any normal, healthy person can do. Walking is good for your health like jogging or running; it will just take longer. Jogging and running make your heart work harder than walking. They also put more stress on your legs and feet than walking does.

The problem with walking is that most people don’t take it seriously. But there’s a big difference between serious walking and the walking that most of us do. Walking, like jogging, should have a steady and continuous motion (稳健而持续的动作).

If you want to get your exercise by walking, you need to have your own walking plan. After all, runners and joggers set goals for themselves. Walkers need goals, too. You also need to set a course to walk. Start by walking about 15~30 minutes a day. Increase your time and distance (距离) slowly. And try increasing your walking speed little by little.

If you prefer to jog or run, follow the same advice. Start off slowly. Spend most of the first few days just walking. Then, start walking and running on the same day. Run or jog a short distance, then walk for a while, then, run, then walk. Follow that pattern for 15--30 minutes a day. Slowly make each run longer and each walk shorter. Later on, you can increase your distance, speed and exercise time.

What do we really mean by being open? Being open is a kind of invitation to others to come in, to speak and to share. It is important for others to get to know how we think and feel. In this way, we will be understood and accepted by others. If we aren’t open with others, we won’t fully believe in ourselves or others.

Here are a few ways for you to be more open. First, make your outside behavior the same as your inside feelings and thoughts. Second, share how you really feel about something instead of just opinions. Third, try to change your questions into statements (陈述句) and talk in the first person so that people will understand you more easily. For example, you might say, “I feel happy that you’re here.” instead of “Are you glad that you’re here?” Finally, try not to say, “I don’t know.” This usually means I don’t want to think about it any more.

Remember also that it is not suitable to be open with everyone in every situation. You may want to be more open with close friends, but not with people you don’t know well, because you are not sure how someone else will use what they know about you. Besides, some people may not be used to too much openness. If we say everything we feel or think to them, they will feel very uncomfortable at times.

In all, being open is a good way for us to get on well with other people, but we’d better keep the balance (平衡) between being open and not being too open.

              Title: Being   (1)

Try to share your   (7)   feelings.

Conclusion: It will   (10)   us get on well with others if we keep the balance between being open and not being too open.

There are many different ideas about when and where the first toothbrush was invented. Some say it was invented in China around the 11th century. Others say the Romans(罗马人) invented it around the time of Caesar. Nobody knows the exact history of teeth cleaning.

Before the first toothbrushes, sharp(尖的) objects were used to clean teeth.

It’s believed that tribes(部落) in Africa and Australia invented the idea of cleaning their teeth. The modem toothbrush with bristles(毛) was invented in China much later in the 16th or 17th century. Toothbrushes moved to Europe in the mid 1600’s and then became widely used in the area. Animal hair was the first type of bristle to be used.

Today, toothbrushes have nylon(尼龙) bristles and normally have a plastic handle. Animal hair was replaced by nylon in 1938. Electric toothbrushes were invented and marketed in 1880 by “Dr Scott”. The popularity of the electric toothbrush did not take off until after World War Ⅱ. When the cordless(无线的) model was invented in 1960, its popularity increased a lot.

Where does your food come from? How is it made? These days, many people worry about food safety. But food safety is not a new worry. In 1906, Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle. The book is the story of a poor family in Chicago. It is also about the dangerous ways that food was prepared. People were so worried that the U.S. started testing food.
These days, most food in the world is safe. Laws control where food comes from. They also control how food is managed and prepared. Laws are important. But it’s more important to make sure the rules are followed. A good food safety system keeps people safe. It also helps them eat healthy food. Labels(标签)on food give people important information. Then they can make good choices about their food.
Although food safety systems usually work, there can be problems. Sometimes mistakes are made. For example, a truck might carry eggs and then ice cream. The ice cream could make people sick when the truck isn’t cleaned before carrying it. Other problems are not mistakes. Sometimes companies break rules to make more money. When this happens, people don’t know if their food is safe.
As we all know, food is closely related(相关) to our daily life. We should take actions to make food safer!

              (1) What are the people worried about these days? (不超过5个词)

Like many other primary school pupils, nine-year-old Minnal went abroad with her parents during the recent school holidays. It may come as a surprise to learn that she neither shopped at a mall nor ate at a fancy restaurant. She climbed a mountain.

For eight days in May, Minnal hiked nearly 100 kilometres to reach the 5364-metre-high Everest(珠穆朗玛峰) base camp in Nepal. The girl talked about her special trip, "I thought this was the most meaningful trip for me. "It has not been confirmed if the Primary Four pupil is indeed the youngest Singaporean to reach the base camp, as no such records are kept.

Everest's south base camp in Nepal is where climbers planning to climb the world's highest peak stay to get used to the altitude(海拔高度). However, it will be some years before Minnal can actually climb the Everest as climbers have to be at least sixteen years to climb the peak.

How did it all start? It all began last year when Minnal's mother decided she might want to climb the famous Himalayas. As a good hiker, she asked both father and daughter if they were up for the challenge.

This year, on 20Maythe family flew to Nepal.

Minnal shared that most of the eight days were spent hiking ten to fifteen kilometres from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, with the help of three local guides. Luckily, she added nobody fell ill with altitude sickness. She also said that she is thinking of climbing Everest in the future.

              (1) What did Minnal do during the recent school holidays?

              ___________

              (2) How long does Minnal have to wait to climb the Everest's peak?

              (3) Who helped the family to make sure they didn't lose their way?

              (4) What did Minnal think of the climb?

              (5) How will you describe Minnal?

Do you think WeChat can keep families close? Some students say yes while some say no.

              YES
              Xing Yuxi, 12, Chongqing
I like to have a family group on WeChat. It’s important to have a good relationship with ourfamily members, as we love them more than anyone else in the world. In my family’s WeChat group, we often share photos that show our daily lives. We freely talk about our work, school, or even entertainment. It is nice to communicate with people who know me well.
                  Wang Wenyi, 12, Guangdong
WeChat family groups can help us do lots of things. For example, if you have a big announcement (通知) to make to your family, you can just send a single message to the group instead of contacting each member separately (分开地). This saves a lot of time. Also, different family members often live far away from each other. Not everyone contacts every other family member often. But family groups allow us to share our lives with everyone.
                  NO
                  Ma Jingwen, 14, Sichuan
I used to be in my family’s WeChat group, but I’m not in it anymore. I don’t think it is very useful. Every morning, my family members all send the same emoji (表情), which says “good morning, my friends”. The emojis look really old-fashioned, with shining or spinning (旋转的) Chinese characters (汉字). They’re annoying to me. On weekends, they share many pictures while I’m trying to study. My phone keeps ringing, which really distracts (使……分神) me.
                  Hong Weicheng, 12, Guangdong
Many people share their photos, addresses, and other private information in their WeChat family groups, which is not safe. Also, the long texts and continuous voice messages are annoying to me. My family members often talk about stuff (东西) that has nothing to do with me, but I have to spend time checking the messages anyway. It causes me to spend more time on my phone. It is bad for my eyes.阅读以上信息,用恰当的单词完成下面的表格,每空一词。

We say YES to others because we want to make them satisfied. But sometimes we have to say NO to others. How can you say NO?
Stick (坚持) to your plan.If you have your goals, this gives you a reason to stick to your plan. For example,if someone asks you to buy a new car,you can say,"Thanks, but I already have a car,so you don't need to give me some information about cars."
Be polite but firm (坚定) in saying NO.For example, the sentence,"I'll try to be there” is a good reply to a party invitation. This can give you an excuse not to go to the party.

It was 6:00 on a Monday morning. Adam, 12 years old, was on his way to school, the Mcedo-Beijing school in a slum(贫民窟) in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi(肯尼亚首都内罗毕). This school was built in 2001 with the help of China, for kids from poor families.

Before joining the Mcedo-Beijing school, Adam was at home with his seven brothers, collecting garbage(垃圾). The school is giving these kids hope for the future by providing a chance to get education.

Table manners are very different in every country. For example, when you are in England you must not lift your soup plate to your mouth. This is very impolite. But when you are in Japan this is completely normal. Lifting your plate to your mouth in Japan is a traditional way of drinking your soup. And also in Japan you don’t have to worry about making a noise when you drink it. It just shows that you really like the food! But it is not the same in Britain, so you shouldn’t make a noise when eating there.

In Britain, people don’t put their hands or arms on the table during the meal. But in Mexico, guests keep their hands on the table all the time. In fact, you should watch what your hands do very carefully. In Arab countries, it is impolite when you eat with your left hand, so don’t do it!

In all the cultures it is impolite to speak when you are eating.
