In most classes, students sit at desks and listen to teachers in a classroom. But in a new class at Chapman Middle School (CMS) in Kansas, US, students are leaving the blackboards behind for blue skies and green grass.

They are actually taking an outdoor life class. It’s not a typical class, but teachers are trying it out.

“We want kids to experience the outdoors,” the class teacher John Harris said.

Twenty-six students attend the semester (一学期) long class. The class includes four parts: archery (射箭), hunter safety, survival (生存) skills and fishing. Also, students will discuss protecting natural resources (资源).

Before Harris’ class this year, archery teacher Andy Fewin taught a 9-week outdoor life class. All CMS students took it.

“It gets kids involved (使参与) in something other than sitting and playing video games,” Fewin said.

Harris shares the same idea. He believes everyone needs to “enjoy life” and “get outside”.

“The outdoor life class aims to get the kids interested in coming to school, really enjoying their class time and understanding the big picture,” Harris said.

But he said everyone needs to finish their other work first. “It really teaches them to focus and pay attention in class. If they don’t, then they’ll miss out on the fun things we’re doing,” he said.

It was 6:00 on a Monday morning. With his books in his bag, 13-year-old James Mwangi was on his way to school, the Mcedo-Beijing school in a slum(贫民窟)in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi (肯尼亚首都内罗毕). This school was built in 2001 with the help of China, for children from poor families. After getting to school, Mwangi went straight to his class to do his class work. Before joining the Mcedo-Beijing school, Mwangi was at home with his seven brothers, collecting rubbish.(84)The school gives these children hope for the future by providing them with a chance(机会) to get education.“For me, education is the best gift,” said Mwangi.

Fire was discovered many thousands of years ago. The first time humans saw fire was probably when a tree was destroyed by lighting(闪电). Humans soon learned how to make fire. They probably made the first fire by rubbing(摩擦)two sticks together.

Fire was very important to humans. They needed to keep warm at night. They used fire to cook food.(1)They used fire to keep enemies and wild animals away. In some parts of the world fire was used to send massages. The Indians in America, for example, used fire to make smoke as a message. In some other countries people lit fires to warm their friends of danger.

(2)火也被用来照明 Before the invention of the oil lamp(灯), humans burned sticks to get light.

One man even used fire to tell the time. He invented a candle clock. He made a candle that took exactly twelve hours to burn. Then he marked this candle in twelve equal(相等的)parts. He lit the candle and could tell the time by counting the number of parts left of the burning candle. But the candle clock did not always work well. If there was a wild blowing on the candle, it burned too quickly.

It’s known that the marmots(土拨鼠) are very shy around humans, beating their tails and making loud noise with their teeth to tell other members of their colony to run away.

But when these marmots see Matteo Walch, they run to his side and show him nothing but affection(喜爱).

The eight-year-old Matteo Walch built up a great relationship with the creatures since first being taken to see them by his nature-loving family four years ago.

The family return to visit these marmots in Groslocker in the Austrian Alps(阿尔卑斯山) for two weeks every year.

Matteo loves those animals and they are not at all afraid of Matteo because he has a feeling towards them and they understand that.

Marmots stand at around 18cm tall and can reach up to 50cm in length. Strangely, the animals are heavier in autumn, when they can weigh up to 8kg, but 3kg in the spring months.

Michael, a teacher from Innsbruck, Austria, has taken lots of photos of Matteo and his marmot friends during the past four years.

He said,“I could spend several hours watching animals. It’s great that I have been able to document the marmot’s natural behavior around Matteo without making them afraid of me and my camera, I wanted to capture(用影片文字等记录…的原样) the animals exactly the way I see them ---the way they behave among each other.”

Many people run for exercise. But what will you do if you are not a “born” runner or jogger (慢跑者)? You may still want a kind of exercise that’s inexpensive and easy to do. Why not try walking?

Walking requires no special equipment (装备). It is a kind of exercise that almost any normal, healthy person can do. Walking is good for your health like jogging or running; it will just take longer. Jogging and running make your heart work harder than walking. They also put more stress on your legs and feet than walking does.

The problem with walking is that most people don’t take it seriously. But there’s a big difference between serious walking and the walking that most of us do. Walking, like jogging, should have a steady and continuous motion (稳健而持续的动作).

If you want to get your exercise by walking, you need to have your own walking plan. After all, runners and joggers set goals for themselves. Walkers need goals, too. You also need to set a course to walk. Start by walking about 15-30 minutes a day. Increase your time and distance (距离) slowly. And try increasing your walking speed little by little.

If you prefer to jog or run, follow the same advice. Start off slowly. Spend most of the first few days just walking. Then, start walking and running on the same day. Run or jog a short distance, then walk for a while, then, run, then walk. Follow that pattern for 15-30 minutes a day. Slowly make each run longer and each walk shorter. Later on, you can increase your distance, speed and exercise time.
