As we all know, Chinese students are hard-working. But they’re   (1)  at the same time.

At school, they have to follow the strict school  (2)  . For example, they   (3)   have long hair or wear strange (奇怪的) clothes.

And at home, they’re always busy with their homework and they don’t have any free time to do what they like. Once (一旦) they don’t do well in exams, their parents will lose   (4)   for them.

On weekends, their parents tell them to take part in different classes they don’t like. They always feel   (5)   and bored. They   (6)   interest in school things slowly. Some students can’t   (7)   it and leave home. Because their parents only care about children’s study and they never   (8)   what they want.

“Many students can do nothing   (9)   study. Some students even don’t know  (10)   to get on well with others and how to take care of others,”said an expert (专家).

“This is a serious problem. It’s necessary for us to think it over and solve it well,”said another expert.

Once there was a poor woman. She lived by herself in a little house in a village. She didn't have much money   (1)   she was very kind and happy.

One day a young man named Smith came to her door. He was a little thin and tall. He was very   (2)   and asked the old woman for help.

The old woman said,“Come in and have dinner with me, but I only have   (3)  .” They had dinner together. After dinner, the old woman told Smith to   (4)   some potatoes with him. He   (5)   her and then left.

Ten years later, Smith came back to the old woman's door again and   (6)   her a bag of money. She was very   (7)  .

Smith said,“Ten years ago you gave me some potatoes. I   (8)   some potato plants. From those plants, I grew some more plants. Now I am a   (9)   farmer because I have enough money to live, but I never   (10)   how kind you are to me.”

From Monday to Friday most people are busy working or studying, but in the evenings and at weekends they are free and   (1)  themselves. Some watch television or go to the movies, others take part in sports. This is decided by their own   (2)  .

There are many different ways to spend our   (3)  time.

Almost everyone has some kind of hobby : it may be something from collecting stamps to making model planes. Some hobbies are very   (4)  , but others don’t cost anything at all. Some collections are worth   (5)  of money; others are valuable only to their owners.

I know a man who has a coin collection worth several   (6)   dollars. A short time ago he bought a rare fifty-cent piece which   (7)   him$250! He was very happy about this collection and thought the price was all right. On the other hand, my youngest brother collects match boxes. He has almost 600 of them, but I wonder if they are worth any money. However,   (8)   my brother they are quite valuable. Nothing makes him happier than to find a new match box for his collection.

That’s what a hobby means, I think. It is something we   (9)  to do in our free time just for the   (10)   of it. The value in dollars is not important, but the pleasure it gives us is.

When Imet mybest friend for the first time. I was studying for an important oral exam in the library and people there made a lot of noise. The more upset I got, the  (1)  it was for me to stay focused. The worst was that someone was even singing loudly behind me.

I   (2)   and glared (盯着) at the person. She looked like a friendly girl,   (3)  it made me even angrier.

I picked up my books, glared at her and said in a low voice angrily. “Thanks to your   (4)  ,I’ve been unable to study. You’re so selfish.”

When I got home twohours later, I found that I’d left my most important textbook in the library and the library was closed. I was so   (5)   that I almost cried. Just then, the phone rang. After making sure that I was Jane, the girl said that she had found my book and she got my phone number from the librarians’ files according to my name on the   (6)  . She said she could bring it around for me.

I was so   (7)  ! When I found she was the girl I had shouted at for singing, my face turned red and I said sorry several times for my rude behavior(粗鲁的行为). Jenny just laughed and told me she was glad to see that I’d also left my glare in the library! I couldn’t help   (8)  .

We got along reallywell and ever since then we’ve been best friends. I often think how   (9)  I am. If Jenny hadn’t been a kind person who was willing to forgive (原谅) my rudeness, I would never have   (10)   such true friendship.

China has changed so fast that it is hard to know when to start. I came to China in 1994 and _(1)_ here ever since, so I have seen the changes in China. Take one city, Shenzhen for example. When I first saw this city, it   (1)  _ beggars (乞丐) and lots of low rise buildings. Many of the _  (2)  _ had shack (窝棚) buildings on top of them.

There were no birds and other little wild life. It was like entering a   (3)  _ planet. But in the past 20 years Shenzhen has been a rather modern city   (4)  _ huge high rise buildings and a stock (股票) exchange, also a very large shipping industry.

Now the city is very green, _  (5)  _ the wildlife has returned. Finally I can hear the birds _  (6)  _ and this brings hope of a better China in the future.

As China moves from being the "workshop" of the world to a more acceptable service industry and people live _  (7)  than before. The present leader is taking the country in the best possible direction and   (8)  _ is admirable (令人钦佩的).

China has changed for the better and I've enjoyed every minute   (9)  _ I've spent there. I think the country will become more beautiful in the future.
