In Britain, people all receive free medical treatment. Anyone who feels unwell may go to the doctor in a National Health Service hospital or in a “group practice” formed by several National Health Service doctors who are paid by the state.

Among the National Health Service doctors, some are specialists, others are general practitioners (普通医生).

Do the British think such a medical service (the National Health Service-NHS) nice?

Many patients complain about it nearly every time they go to see the doctor. They say, “ I spent an hour waiting to see the doctor, and when my turn came, he gave me only three minutes and said there was nothing wrong with me.”

What about the doctors and nurses then? Many doctors complain they have so many patients that they do not have enough time to look after any of them properly. Nurses complain that they are overworked and underpaid.

In England many National Health Service hospitals are old-fashioned and overcrowded, and, because of the shortage (缺乏) of beds, patients often have to wait a long time for operations.

Do the rich people complain? No. They prefer going to private doctors or those specialists in Harley Street---the famous “doctors’ street” in London. When the rich people are ill they go to a private nursing home, or they may hire a private room in an ordinary hospital.

If you go to Beijing and Shanghai, you can see the same and the different points between them. In some ways they look the same, in some ways they look different. Both of them have tall buildings and wide streets, although some buildings in Shanghai are taller than those in Beijing. They are both important in China. Beijing is the capital of China, there are more places of interest there, but Shanghai is the biggest city in China. Now they are becoming more and more important in China.

American and British people both speak English of course. But sometimes there are some important differences between British English and American English.

First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans don’t say each wordseparately. They say words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don’t know”. Or they may say “Whaddya say?” instead of “What did you say?” However, the British are more careful. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.

Sound is not only the difference. Words sometimes have different meanings too. For example, the vocabulary for cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.

Many expressions(短语) are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”. In America, you “give them a call”. When you are saying goodbye in England you might say “Cheerio!” In America you might say “See you later.”

There’re also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb “do” when they ask a question. They say “Do you have a storybook?” But the British often leave out the helping verb. They say “Have you a storybook?”

Most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what has happened to English. It can also happen to other languages, such as French. Many people in Canada speak French but their French is very different from the French of France.

Usually we all go to a store to buy something we need. But today we always want to buy new things through the information from advertising and sometimes from TV show. It's quite different from the past.

In fact, people have been advertising for thousands of years. Long ago, some men called“criers(叫卖人)”walked up and down the street. They shouted about things that were being sold. Later, people met at one place. This place was a market. Some people came to sell. Other people came to buy. But only those people who were at the market knew what were being sold. When people learned about printing, things changed. Soon there were newspapers. Many people read the newspapers. They saw many ads in the papers. Later more people saw and listened to the ads on TV.
