The world is not only hungry but also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since   (1)

70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water. But about 97% of that is sea water or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3% of   (2)   water from rivers, lakes, underground and so on. And we can not even use all of that   (3)   some of it has been made dirty.

Earth Day is on April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember how important water is. The water that we use is the most important natural resource   (4)   the earth. Today we   (5)   serious water problem. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes and oceans   (6)  . Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too.

How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First they polluted the air. Then when it   (7)  , the rain water makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain, called acid rain, is also bad for plants, animals and buildings. Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world   (8)   have enough clean water. We have to learn how to stop   (9)   water. The first step is to develop ways of reusing it.

Even though every large cities   (10)   its water, we would still not have enough water. So we should make use of sea water by removing the salt in it. If we can take these steps, fresh water won’t be used up.

We can see walls everywhere in the world. But the Great Wall of China is  (1)   of all. It is often  (2)   “the Ten-thousand-li Great Wall”. It is about 6,300 kilometres  (3)   and it is 4~5metreswide. In most places, five or ten men can walk   (4)  . When you visit the Great Wall, you can’t help wondering.  (5)   Chinese people were able to build such a great wall   (6)   any modern machines many centuries ago. Theyhad todo all then work by hand. It  (7)   millions of men hundreds of years to build it.TheGreat Wallhasa history of over two thousand years. The men began to build the  (8)   part of it about2,700 yearsago. Then Qin Shi Huang made the men  (9)   join all the walls together. He thought that couldstopthe invaders(侵略者)from coming into the country .Today the Great Wallhas becomea place of interestto all the people inthe world. Every year  (10)  people come to visit it from all over the world. There is a famous saying, “ He who doesn’t reach the Great Wall is not a true man.”

As we all know, the environment around us is getting worse and worse. In some places we can’t see fish  (1)  in the river or trees on the hills. Some people even have no clean water to drink.

Recently, a new life style called low carbon(低碳)life is spreading every corner of our country. The meanings of low carbon are

                (2)  energy and no waste. It is such an important project that I can’t wait to express my ideas on how to promote it.

Firstly, we should    (3)  a no-car day every week in our school. Because cars not only cause serious air pollution but also waste energy.

                (4)  the no-car day, neither students  (5)  teachers are allowed to drive to school. At the same time, just walk or run. Use our legs and enjoy the fun.

Secondly, we had better not use plastic bags  (6)  . No one can stand the“white pollution”,  (7)   it is wise to use cloth bags which can be used again and again.    (8)  ,one thing that we should keep in mind is that every big thing comes from the smalldetails. So, as students, we ought to turn   (9)   the lights the moment we leave, use  (10)   sides of the paper, and reuse our textbooks and so on.

All in all, it weighs greatly for all of us to put the low carbon lifestyle into practice. Just set our mind to these:no-car days, no plastic bags, and no waste. Let’s do it now.

It is autumn. A strong wind is blowing. It   (1)   flower seeds(种子)high in the air. One of the seeds is tiny. Will it be able to keep up   (2)   the others? Finally the wind stops and seeds fall quietly down on the ground.

Now it is   (3)  . After a long trip the seeds feel very   (4)  . They look just as if they are going to sleep in the earth. Snow falls and covers them like a soft white blanket.

Spring comes. It gets warm. The sun shines. Rain falls. The seeds grow   (5)   full and round that they start to break open a little. Now they are not   (6)  . They are plants. First they put roots (根) into the earth. Then their little stems(茎)and leaves begin to dance in the sun and air.

In summer, the tiny plant is all alone. It grows on and doesn’t stop. The sun shines on it   (7)   the rain waters it. It has many leaves. It grows taller and taller. It is   (8)   the people. It is taller than the trees. And now some flowers grow on it.

Autumn comes back. The wind blows past the flowers.  (9)   petals (花瓣) drop over the land and down to the ground. The wind blows harder. The flowers have lost all of their petals. Once more the wind shakes the flowers, and this time the flowers’ seed pods (荚) open. Many new seeds come out. Quickly in the wind they are   (10)   to new plants again.

People like dolphins because they are both lovely and clever. They have a(n)   (1)   IQ (智商).Dolphins can ‘talk’. Scientists try to ‘talk’ with dolphins, and the   (2)   make them surprised. They find dolphins may understand them so well.

Most animals enjoy playing, but dolphins like to make their games different. On a beautiful day in 1997, scientists on a beach   (3)   a little dog going into the sea. They were surprised to see the dolphins come up to the dog and then start throwing (扔) it into the air. The dog   (4)   the ‘game’ and kept playing with the dolphins for over an hour.

Dolphins live in  a very different world from   (5)  , but they are very good at our ‘IQ tests (测试)’. For example, in the picture above, a dolphin jumps   (6)   the water when he hears a whistle noise (哨声). He does this because he will get a fish   (7)   an award.

There is   (8)   much to learn about these lovely friends.

Today we can see that many people are cutting down the trees in the forests. A lot of rich land has become   41 . If we read newspapers, we’ll learn that the forests on the earth are getting smaller   42 . We are cutting down large number of trees   43  we need wood. Some scientists say that there will not be any great forests   44  20 or 30 years.

What will happen if the forests disappear? A lot of plants will die and the animals will   45  their homes. In many places the new farmland will soon   46  the old desert. Crops will not grow there. There won’t be enough   47 , and the weather will get hot and dry. If the climate of the earth changes, life will be   48  for everyone. Our living environment will become worse and worse. More and more rich farmland will disappear. We will suffer a lot of from both droughts (干旱) and floods.

So it’s our duty   49  the forests well. Everyone should try his best to make a contribution (贡献) to taking care of the forests. Stop   50     down the trees and make the world greener.

◆Don’t litter. Litter can   (2)   our water and that could do harm to us and to wildlife.

◆Recycle bottles, paper and plastic. This is a good   (3)   to develop and can really make a difference.

                (4)   turn off lights and electronic devices (设备) when they are not being used.

◆Use your   (5)   or walk to nearby locations rather than riding in a car. Encourage your friends and family to   (6)   the same.

◆Don’t throw your old clothes or toys away. Give   (7)   to a local charity (慈善组织) or a friend that may need them.

                (8)   wasting plastic bags by bringing your own reusable cloth bags to stores.

              ◆If you see litter,   (9)  .

◆By following these tips and using them in your everyday life, you will make the world a   (10)   place. It’s never too late to start, and what better time is there than right now?

The world   (1)   many interesting sounds. Some are unpleasant to our ears while   (2)   are very pleasant to hear. In a single day you probably hear   (3)   sounds. All sounds are different. Some   (4)   loud, some sounds are high, others are low, some sounds are useful.

                (5)   sounds we can’t talk or listen to each other. The ringing of the alarm clock wakes people up. The hooting(鸣笛声) of a car warns people of danger.

Some sounds are harmful. When planes fly low   (6)   the land, the very loud sounds can damage(毁坏) the houses. Very loud sounds can even make people deaf.

We know sound travels about one kilometer in three   (7)   In a thunder storm(雷雨) you see the lighting(闪电) first and then hear the thunder. This is because light travels   (8)   than sound.

Next time you see lighting, count the number of seconds before you hear the thunder. Divide(除以) this number   (9)    This will tell you   (10)   kilometers away the thunder storm is.
