An invention in front of your eyes
What is the most important invention of all time?Is it the written word that helps us to record information? Is it the telephone that lets us talk to people from all over the world? Is it the car that lets us travel at great speeds to meet others?Umberto Eco,an Italian writer, thinks it is something quite different. He says the most important invention might be bright in front of your eyes.He is talking about a simple pair glasses.
Modern eye glasses were invented around 1000years ago. They were more than just a convenient way to read. Before glasses, writers, scientists or teachers who could not see properly had to memorize everything. After about ten years of poor eyesight, they could not remember well enough and could not work.Glasses meant that people could work in their old age.
People who wanted to remember some information could write it down and read it.Eye glasses are one of the world's greatest inventions and were probably worn by the people who designed the first telephones and cars.

Have you ever heard of e-waste(电子垃圾), which can be produced every day? How do you deal with your computers, MP4 players and mobile phones when they’re broken or you want a new one?

Most people just throw them away. With the development of electronic industry(电子产业), e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to the United Nations, in2014, people around the world produced 41.8million tons(吨) of e-waste and only recycled 6.5 millions tons. The US the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China came second, with 6 million tons.

It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable or harmful, depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban mine(城市矿藏). The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is surprising. And the metals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the toxic chemicals(有毒化学物质)can get into the earth or air, affecting  the environment and people’s health.

Apple, for example, now recycle people’s used products in China when they are buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell them at lower prices. To help reduce e-waste, we can buy longer lasting electronic products. If you have unwanted electronics, find a new home for them. You can also take computers and phones to see if companies offer recycling programs.

              (1) The following can be e-waste EXCEPT ________.
              A. computers B. mobile phones
              C. plastic bags D. MP4 players
              (2) Which country produced the second most e-waste in 2014 according to the United Nations?
              A. China. B. America. C. Japan D. France
              (3) The underlined word “affecting” means________.
              A. 保护    B. 提高        C. 改善     D. 影响
              (4) We can________ to reduce e-waste.
              A. sell the electronics to Apple company
              B. buy longer lasting electronic products
              C. keep the unwanted electronics in our bedrooms
              D. throw away the unwanted electronics
              (5) The main purpose of this passage is to ________.
              A. prove that e-waste is not useful
              B. encourage people to buy more electronic products
              C. advise people to deal with e-waste properly to reduce pollution
              D. advise people to sell the unwanted electronics

Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The program works because everyone's eyes are different. So in the future you won't have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You'll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.
The eye-recognition(眼睛识别) program is already being tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain and France. Soon, this technology(技术) will change all other ways of finding out who people are.
However, scientists are working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hands or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your fingers.
Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don't change as you get older, or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes, so the program can be up to 94% correct, depending on (依靠) how good the technology is. Some programs may only be right 51% of the time. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.
In the future your computer will be looking at you in the eye. So smile!

French and American doctors have done an operation(手术) together in which the doctors were outside the operating room. This kind of operation is known as robotic_operation
Doctor Marescaux did the operation in an office in New York City last month, while a sixty-eight-year-old woman patient was in a hospital in Strasbourg,France.
A doctor in Strasbourg got the patient ready. He placed medical tools and a small video camera in her stomach area.Doctor Marescaux in New York watched the patient on a video screen. Then he used the computer to send messages to the robot machine.
The robot moved the tools that cut the woman's gallbladder(胆囊) away. The woman got well soon after the operation and left the hospital two days later.
Experts say the main problem with such a robotic operation is based on high-speed telecommunications(通信系统) between the doctor and the robot.Technology must be able to send a doctor's order to a robot to move the tool quickly.
Experts also say a successful robotic operation will improve an operation. For example, the robot can make such smaller movements than a person can.A robot machine can turn tools in ways that a doctor's hand cannot.
Doctors say such a robotic operation will make safer and better operations in the future. They say it will improve doctor training. It will also mean that doctors could do operations on people in dangerous places far away. And it could mean that people could have operations done by top doctors without having to travel to the city where the doctors work.

              Weather has a strong effect(影响) on people.It influences(影响) health,intelligence(智力),and feelings.
In August,it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States.People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problem during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West,it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times.People in these states will have heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example,in a 1983study by scientists, the IQ scores (智商分数)of some college students were very high during a storm, but after the storm, their scores were low.Storms can increase intelligence.Very hot weather,on the other hand, can lower it.Students in many schools of the United States often do badly on exams in the hot months of the year(July and August).
Weather also has a strong effect on people's feeling.Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel depressed(沮丧的) during cold weather. In hot summer weather,on the other hand, fat people may feel unhappy. At about 65F,people become stronger.
Low air pressure(气压) makes people feel free, but it also increases forgetfulness.People leave more bags and umbrellas on buses and stores on low pressure days. There is a"perfect weather"for work and health.People feel best at a temperature of about 64F with 65percent humidity(湿度).

Everybody has different hobbies that they like to do for fun or just to relax. There are many kinds of activities like volleyball, basketball, swimming, or baseball. It all depends on each personality. For me, basketball is a part of my life and it means a lot to me.
Since I was a little girl, I started to play basketball in the school team and also with my friends in the neighborhood. My mother told me that I liked kicking the ball around and had so much fun with it when I was only about two years old. Since then, playing basketball is my favorite sport. It is my hobby whenever I have free time.
Playing basketball also helps me to relax and be confident. I often play basketball with my classmates in the playground. After doing my homework or when I come home from school, I play a little bit with my friends outside of my house or we go to the park to play it.
Whenever I play basketball, I feel healthier and stronger. Besides, I meet new friends from the neighborhood. I not only like playing basketball, but I also enjoy watching basketball games on television.
