Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated(隔绝) and inactive.

Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.

These include custom-made navigation(导航) tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations. Phil Blythe explains: “For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.”

“But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.”

Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains: “The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key stress points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems.”

“For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined.We’re looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that.”

“We hope that our work will help with technological solutions(解决方案) to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.”

While beach vacations may be a great way to take your mind off work, people tend to forget about lakes, which can be as equally beautiful a travel destination as beach holidays. If you are looking for some peace on your vacation, we have some recommendations for you in the Caucasus.

1) Lake Van

Lake Van is the must－visit of all lakes on this list. The largest lake in Turkey, Lake Van is located on the eastern shore of Turkey and is also the most accessible lake there. Itˈs situated at 5，380ft above sea level, and unique to lakes around the world, the water is high in salt content.

2) Lake Cildir

Lake Cildir is located in Ardahan Province, East Turkey, near the borders of Georgia and Armenia. It is the second largest freshwater lake in Eastern Turkey, and many tourists are not aware of this beautiful attraction. Lake Cildir is surrounded by mountains of the Caucasus. The lake freezes during late November. If the winter is not harsh, you can try some lake activities like ice skating and ice fishing.

3) Lake Paravani

Lake Paravani is located in the south of Georgia. This time, the elevation(海拔)gets a little higher, as this lake is located at 6，801ft above sea level. At this level, altitude sickness can occur and it is a good idea to bring medication for altitude sickness. Being a volcanic lake makes for a more interesting experience. The lake is best known for fishing.

4) Lake Seven

Lake Seven is situated in the central part of Armenia, in Gegharkunik Province. It is the largest lake in Armenia, located at 6，200ft above sea level. Along the lake shore, there are various kinds of accommodation such as resorts and hotels, with plenty of activities to take part in, such as windsurfing, swimming and sunbathing. Meanwhile, do not forget to visit one of the famous cultural monuments, the Sevanavank Monastery(修道院), and it offers a great view of the lake as well.

  There is no better way to enjoy Scottish traditions than going fishing and tasting a little bit of whisky（威士忌）at a quiet place like the Inverlochy Castle. When Queen Victoria visited the castle in 1873, she wrote in her diary, “I never saw a lovelier spot.”

    Scotland is not easily defined. In certain moments, this quiet land of lakes and grasses and mountains changes before your very eyes. When evening gently sweeps the hillside into orange light, the rivers, teeming with fish, can turn into streams of gold. As you settle down with just a fishing pole and a basket on the bank of River Orchy, near the Inverlochy Castle, any frustration（烦恼）will float away as gently as the circling water. It’s just you and purple, pink, white flowers, seeking a perfect harmony. If you are a new comer to fishing, learning the basics from a fishing guide may leave you with a lifetime’s fun. For many, fishing is more than a sport; it is an art.

    Scotland offers interesting places where you can rest after a long day’s fishing. Set against a wild mountain and hidden behind woodland, the beautiful Inverlochy Castle Hotel below the Nevis is a perfect place to see the beauty of Scotland’s mountains. Ben Nevis is the highest of all British mountains, and reaching its 1,342-metre top is a challenge. But it’s not just what goes up matters; what comes down is unique. More than 900 metres high, on the mountain’s north face, lies an all-important source of pure water. Its name comes from the Gaelic（盖尔特）language “usqueb” or “water of life”. And it is the single most important ingredient（原料）in Scotland’s best-known drink: whisky.

University Library

University libraries house thousands of books．“Go to your college’s library as soon as possible when school starts with a list of the textbooks you need．Have the author names and publication dates with you．If the library has it，see if you can check it out or if it’s to be used only in the library，” says Jon Lal, founder of the savings website BeFrugal.con.

Book Swap

Textbooks collect dust as soon as the term ends．So why not let someone else use it?

Student organizations at schools such as Georgia College and the University of Florida set up online book exchanges．These sites allow undergraduates to list books they have and books they need in hopes of finding a match．

If your campus doesn’t have a book exchange，start one．Book swaps only work if students participate.

Project Gutenberg

The oldest digital library in the world offers more than 43,000 e-books，completely gratis (无偿)．Comparative literature students taking only Jane Austen at Binghamton University，for example，can find every book on their syllabus (课程表) via Project Gutenberg．

E-readers

Amazon’s Kindle Lending Library allows members to check out e-books for free．Students will be able to find both popular and classic titles．

There is a catch，though．To use the Kindle library，students need to own the namesake (实名制) e-reader．They also need to subscribe to Amazon Prime，which is $39 per year for college students．

Undergraduates may find PDFs of textbooks posted online，too，but downloading those copies can get them into copyright waters．And even so，searches may bear little fruit．Generally，undergraduates won’t be able to find many free textbooks except for classic literature．
