A boy was walking home from school when he saw a large, tempting(诱人的)apple on one of the branches of an apple tree hanging out over a tall fence. The boy wasn’t much of a fruit-eater,   (1)  a bar of chocolate if given the choice.   (2)  , as the saying goes, the forbidden fruit can be tempting. Seeing the apple, the boy wanted it. The more he looked at it, the   (3)  he felt and the more he wanted that apple.

                   (4)   as high as he could , but even as his tallest height he was  (5)_ to touch it. He began to   (5)   up and down , as high as he could, at the top of each jump stretching his   (6)  to get the apple . Still it remained out of   (7)  .

Not giving up , he thought , if only he had something to  (8)  on . His school bag wouldn’t give enough height and he didn’t want to  (9)   the things inside , like his lunch box , pencil case , and Gameboy . Looking  (10)  , he hoped he might find an old box , a rock , or ,   (11)  enough, a ladder , but it was a tidy neighborhood and there was nothing he could use .

He had tried everything he could think to do.   (12)  seeing any other choices , he gave up and started to walk   (13)   . At first he felt angry and disappointed thinking about how hungry he had become from his  (14)  , and how he really wanted that apple . The more he   (15)   like this , the more unhappy he became.

However, the boy of our story was a pretty smart guy,  (16)  he couldn’t always get what get he wanted .He started to say to himself, “This isn’t  (17)  , I don’t have the apple and I’m feeling miserable as well. There’s   (18)   more I can do to get the apple--that is unchangeable-but we are supposed to be able to  (19)  our feelings. If that’s the case, what can I do to feel better?”

In fact, nearly a thousand people   (10)   their lives that day and in the days that   (11)  . Many homes and buildings were  (12)   init. My family was   (13)   enough to get out of our house before the earthquake   (14)   destroyed it. We   (15)   it to settle in a neighboring town. How lucky we were!

I’ll never forget the way the earthquake   (16)   my dad. He moved our family from California within a month   (17)   he was determined to make a safer life for us. He didn’t think he was doing his job of protecting us by   (18)   to stay in a place where an earthquake could strike again   (19)   any time. I’ll never forget that earthquake and the way it changed our   (20)  .
