It was the American sitcom (情景喜剧) that influenced a generation. The six stars of Friendswenttheir separate ways after 237 episodes and a decade together as flat mates, sharing their lives, loves and careers in aNew York apartment.

“Friends had a huge influence on American TV history”, said Steve Beverly, professor of communication arts. “This group of six reflected what people their age experienced in their daily lives, so viewers could understand them easily.”

We all wanted a life like theirs—the cool New York flat with table football and easy chairs, and the

social circle of beautiful, supportive friends. We also wanted to drink endless coffee, which was one example of how the show changed our lives. Even the haircut of Rachel—one of the six—was copied by millions of women.

The show has been credited with influencing how many of us speak. Researchers analyzed every

episode to explore whether popular culture influenced how we speak. Before the show, people usually put

very orreally before an adjective. On Friends, they used so. “This guy is so cool,” they said, and now we

              all say it.

The show enjoyed a huge increase in ratings after the 11 September terrorist attacks, as sad New

Yorkers struggled to make sense of the real horrors that had unfolded around them. In the show, they

sought the return of a feel-good factor (因素), according to Robert Thompson, professor of television and

popular culture. “Friendsis set not in the realNew York, but in the fantasyNew York where everybody leaves their doors unlocked and people don’t fly planes into buildings,” he said.

Friendsis more than just a sitcom; it’s a way of life. Our attitudes to theFriends’ lives is a mixture of envy: ‘How do they get to sit on sofas all day drinking coffee?” and disdain: “Don’t they have anything better to do with their time, like earn a living to pay for thatManhattan apartment?” Anyway, althoughFriends came to an end long ago, it will last forever.

              (1) According to Steve Beverly, many people like Friends because ______.
              A. its actors were very attractive
              B. it was the first American sitcom
              C. it described American dream life
              D. viewers could relate to its characters
              (2) Paragraph 4 is mainly about ______,
              A. researchers’ interest in the show
              B. the show’s influence on language
              C. the relation between the show and culture
              D. the way the show’s characters use adjectives
              (3) What do we know about the show after 9/11?
              A. It helped people face terrorist attacks.
              B. It stopped being set inNew York.
              C. It provided people with comfort.
              D. It attracted fewer viewers.
              (4) In the last paragraph, the underlined word “distain” most probably means _______.

Suppose you’re in a rush, felling tired, not paying attention to your screen, and you send an email that could get you in trouble.

Realisation will probably set in seconds after you’ve clicked “send”. You freeze in horrors and burn with shame.

What to do? Here are four common email accidents, and how to recover.

              Clicking “send” too soon

Don’t waste your time trying to find out if the receivers has read it yet. Write another email as swiftly as you can and send it with a brief explaining that this is the correct version and the previous version should be ignored.

              Writing the wrong name

The sooner you notice, the better. Respond quickly and briefly, apologizing for your mistake. Keep the tone measured: don’t handle it too lightly, as people can be offered, especially if your error suggests a misunderstanding of their culture(i.e. incorrect ordering of Chinese names).

              Clicking “reply all” unintentionally

You accidentally reveal(透露)to entire company what menu choices you would prefer at the staff Christmas dinner, or what holiday you’d like to take. In this instance, the best solution is to send a quick, light-hearted apology to explain your awkwardness. But it can quickly rise to something worse, when everyone starts hitting “reply all” to join in a long and unpleasant conversation. In this instance, step away from your keyboard to allow everyone to calm down.

Sending an offensive message to its subject

The most awkward email mistake is usually committed in anger. You write an unkind message about someone, intending to send it to a friend, but accidentally send it to the person you’re discussing. In that case, ask to speak in person as soon as possible and say sorry. Explain your frustrations calmly and sensibly—see it as an opportunity to clear up any difficulties you may have with this person.

              (1) After realising an email accident, you are likely to feel _______.
              A. curious B. tired C. awful D. funny
              (2) If you have written the wrong name in an email, it is best to ________.
              A. apologise in a serious manner
              B. tell the receiver to ignore the error
              C. learn to write the name correctly
              D. send a short notice to everyone
              (3) What should you do when an unpleasant conversation is started by your “reply all” email?
              A. Try offering other choices.
              B. Avoid further involvement.
              C. Meet other staff members.
              D. Make a light-hearted apology.

If you frequently travel for business, Staybridge Suites offer you a range of home comforts. Four recent visitors to Staybridge Suites explain why they hooked, what they enjoyed and what made them want to return.

                 Claire Metcalf

"The concept is great, but the staff are the ones who really make it," she says. "It takes a lot of discipline to always be friendly, but the staff at Staybridge Suites do that. They genuinely care about you."

                 Andrew Roberts

"One of the best things is having my own kitchen. I often end up working late and I don't fancy eating in a restaurant on my own, so cooking for myself is a big drawcard."

"The main thing for me is being able to cook and have my own little flat. The staff are amazing. It is great to be recognized by them," he says.

                 Pauline Robinson

"What I love about it is the way that you are treated by the staff," she says. "Some of the staff have been there all that time and they do look after you well. As a woman staying on my own, it is reassuring that they look out for you, and recently when I was poorly they even brought things I needed to my room."

                 Ryan Ruckledge

"The fully-equipped kitchen is great. I always have a one-bed apartment so I have a separate kitchen and dining room and I'm able to relax and cook some meals. Eating out can feel a bit much when you do it day in and day out it makes you hate what you do—and I don't want that.

              (1) What attracts visitors to Staybridge Suites?
              A. A separate dining room.    B. A one-bed apartment.
              C. A home from home.    D. A lot of discipline.
              (2) Who think highly of the kitchen of Staybridge Suites?
              A. Pauline Robinson and Ryan Ruckledge.

              C. Andrew Roberts and Ryan Ruckledge.

              C. honour.    D. difficulty.
              (4) Why does the author write the article?

              B. To introduce four recent visitors.

Are you a bit bored with your nine-to-five routine? Have a look at our exciting range of holidays and decide what type of adventure you’d like.

                  Activity holidays

Our activity holidays are for everyone, people who love adventure or who just like sports. We have a huge variety of water, snow or desert holidays. We’ll take you scuba diving in the Red Sea or kayaking and white water rafting in Canada. If you prefer snow, you can try skiing or snowboarding in the Alps or even igloo-building. For those who like warmer weather, we also have sandboarding or camel trips.

                  Polar expeditions

Take a voyage to Antarctica or the northern Arctic; explore a land of white natural beauty and wonderful wildlife. Our experts will explain everything about the two poles as you watch the penguins in Antarctica or whales and polar bears in the Arctic. There’s no greater adventure than traveling to the ends of the earth. A once-in-a-lifetime experience.

                  Cultural journeys

Our cultural journeys will help you discover ancient civilizations: India, Thailand, Egypt and many more. Visit temples, places and ancient ruins—just remember to bring your camera! Get to know local ways of life by exploring markets, trying local foods and meeting local people.

                  Wildlife holidays

We organize small group tours to get closer to nature in Africa, Asia or South America. Go on trips in Africa and watch lions and giraffes. Meet the famous turtles of the Galapagos Islands. Look for tigers in India, or take an elephant tour in Sri Lanka. We use local guides and stay in a range of accommodation, from tents to tree houses.
