I worked in a store three years ago. I remember one girl who started   (1)   there a few months after me. I remember always meeting her, I don’t know    (2)   but for a strange reason we would never talk. We would just see each other and smile.

She would      (3)    smile in a really happy way until one day when we got to work in the     (4)    department again. She      (5)     as if she was the happiest girl in the world. But I had a strange feeling. So I went up to her and asked, “What’s wrong with you?” She answered, “Why?” I said, “I could feel you’re very      (6)    today and you’re trying to hide it.”

She was surprised as if I had      (7)    her deepest secret, so we started     (8)   .

She told me why she was feeling like that and why she was     (9)      to hide it and we had a good time together. Time     (10)      and we became good friends. She’d always tell me I had changed her     (11)     in so many ways, but I could not     (12)      how it had happened. I would just smile, not understanding what she    (13)    by that.

Today this girl is one of my best    (14)    .I really don’t know what I would do  (15)   her. She has been there for me in every possible way a friend could be. I guess what I’m trying to say is that you       (16)    know when you’re helping yourself. I    (17)     this girl never knowing that at the same time I was helping myself by finding a(n)    (18)      friend.

So the next time you see a     (19)     , and he looks as if he needs    (20)     who will listen to him, listen to what he has to say. You never know, you might just end up helping yourself.

When Dave was eighteen, he bought a second-hand car for£200 so that he could travel to and from work more   (1)   than by bus. It worked quite well for a few years, but it got so old, and it was costing him   (2)  much in repairs, that he decided that he had better   (3)  it.

He asked among his friends to see if anyone was   (4)  to buy a cheap car, but they all knew that it was falling to pieces, so   (5)  of them had any desire to buy it.

Dave’s friend Sam saw that he was   (6)   when they met one evening, and said, “What’s   (7)  , Dave?” Dave told him, and Sam answered, “Well, what about advertising(登广告) it in the paper? You may  (8)    more for it that way than the cost of the advertisement!” Thinking that Sam’s   (9)  was reasonable, he put an advertisement in an evening paper, which read: “For sale: small car,   (10)   very little gas, only two owners. Bargain at£50.”

For two days after the advertisement first appeared, there was no   (11)  . but then on the Saturday evening he had an enquiry (咨询). A man rang up and said he would like to   (12)  him about the car. “All right.” Dave said, feeling happy. He asked the man whether ten o’clock the next morning would be   (13)  or not. “Fine,” the man said, “and I’ll   (14)  my wife. We want to go for a ride in it to   (15)   it.”

The next morning, at a quarter to ten, Dave parked the car in the square outside his front door,   (16)  to wait there for the people who had   (17)   his advertisement. Even Dave had to   (18)  that the car really looked like a wreck (残破的车). Then, soon after he had got the car as   (19)   as it could be, a police car stopped just behind him and a policeman got out. He looked at Dave’s car and then said, “Have you reported this   (20)  to us yet, sir?”

The professor stood before his class of 30 senior biology students, about to pass out the final exam. “I have been privileged to be yourthis semester, and I know how hard you all have worked to for this test. I also know most of you are to medical school next fall,” he said to them.

“I am well aware of how much you are under to keep your GPAs up, and because I know you are allof understanding this material, I am prepared to an automatic B to anyone who wouldnot to take the final.”

The relief was audible(听得见的) as a number of students jumped up tothe professor and departed from class. The professor looked at the handful of students who , and offered again, “Any other takers? This is your last.” One more student decided to

Seven students remained. The professor closed the door and took attendance. Then hethe papers. There were two sentences typed on the:

“, you have just received an A in this class. Keep believing in yourself.”

I had a professor who gave a test like that. It may seem like the easy of grading exams, but it’s a that any teacher in any discipline(治学严谨) could and should give. Students who don’t have  in what they’ve learned are B students at best.

The same isfor students of real life. The A students are those who believe in what they’re doing they’ve learned from both successes and failures.

I spent two months with an American family last year when I studied in America. It is said,“The best house is in the,the best wife is in Japan, and the best food is in China.”So I took   (1)   and pleasure to   (2)  “the best food”for my American family. Each day, regardless of my poor skill of cooking,I performed(表演)my play in   (3)   way:changing the dishes’color, the meat’s type or the soup’s style(风味).Thus,my American friends could discover the   (4)   of eating Chinese food.Because of my“  (5)  ”job,I was often rewarded(奖励)by their   (6)   of appreciation such as “very tasty”,“excellent”, etc.But the joke was here:yesterday,I cooked Sichuan-style  (7)  for dinner.I was   (8)   at my achievement(成就).When all the family members arrived at the table, they first looked   (9)   at the fish, then looked at me.“Why do all the fish have their   (10)  ?”they asked,“It’s horrible!”Horrible or beautiful?I don’t know. But I   (11)   know that fish heads are   (12)  . The head is the best part of fish;in  (13)   only the respectable guest can have the special   (14)  of enjoying it.

Another   (15)   thing is:the American friends often said to me“   (16)   ”as they   (17)   fruits or other things.According to Chinese tradition,I would simply smile in answer to their kindness   (18)   actually helping myself to any of the food.  (19)  ,I said“help yourself”to them whenever I brought home fruits.Dear me,no matter how much or how often I brought home food,as long as it was nice to their taste, they   (20)   hesitated(犹豫)to use their hands to“help themselves”until all was finished.

Fire can   (1)   many things. It is dangerous to everyone, but it is   (2)   useful. We cannot live without   (3)   .In other words, fire is both the   (4)   and enemy of us. This   (5)   on whether we use it wisely or not.

To the people  (6)  live in the forest area, fire is particularly dangerous. It is the location   (7)  most of their houses are made of wood, which   (8)   catches fire. Especially in winter the air is   (9)   and the wind is often 1  (10)   .If one of these houses is on fire, the wind will   (11)   the fire to the neighboring houses quickly, and the fire will soon  (12)   all over the area. If this happens   (13)   , it may not be too bad.   (14)  if it happens at night, the situation will be very bad, for most people are   (15)    ,and many of them cannot run away in time. If they can, they will just   (16)   all the things behind. Some people even do not know   (17)   is going on, and they   (18)   in their dreams.

We should do our best to  (19)   the breakout of fire, which is mostly caused by people’s carelessness. Therefore, not only the people of the   (20)   areas but everyone else should be very careful in using fire.

I have learned a lot from being a taxi driver. I’ve been in the _  (1)  _ for many years, and I know there is a lot about it that is not so _  (2)  _ . Taxi drivers have to be tough to _  (3)  _ the New York traffic eight hours a day. Because taxi drivers are tough, people get the wrong _  (4)  _ that they are bad. However, you can read in the _  (5)  _ almost every week that taxi drivers _  (6)  _ the things people left in their cabs. If they weren’t _  (7)  _, you wouldn’t read those moving stories in the papers.

In 1913, I bought my own cab. It was difficult at that time so I had _  (8)  _ part of my money for something unexpected. I did pretty well, _  (9)  _ in those days. Once inBrooklyn, I found a _  (10)  _ in my cab. I remembered helping a lady with a lot of luggage that day, so I went back where I had _  (11)  _

her off. It took me almost two days to find her so as to _  (12)  _ the ring. I didn’t get as much as “_  (13)  _”. Still, I felt good because I had done what was right.

People ask me about the _  (14)  _. As far as I know, _  (15)  _ everyone will give you something. You know most Americans are pretty  _  (16)  _. I always try to be nice to everyone, whether they tip or not. In all my years of driving a cab, I have never had any _  (17)  _ with the public. I try to _  (18)  _ others the way I want to be treated. I have been trying this for a long time, and the longer I try, the _  (19)  _ it gets. Up till now, I still hold the view that _  (20)  _ is one of the greatest qualities of people.

After my brother died in an accident, my mom’s attitude to safety greatly changed. Suddenly, everything around us became potentially dangerous.

I grew up   (1)   a lot of restrictions (限制) and rules that were   (2)   to protect me. Unlike my classmates, I couldn’t walk home from school by myself; I couldn’t attend evening parties or go to summer camp. I knew my mom was only trying to protect me. She was   (3)   about me because after my brother died, I was her only child — and what if something happened to me?

I became a   (4)   worrier too. I worry about things like getting cancer, losing my wallet,  (5)   car accidents, and losing my job…  (6)   big and small, real and imagined.

The funny part is that you’d   (7)   know it by looking at my life, because I’m constantly   (8)   myself to do the things that frighten or worry me. In fact, I have   (9)   a rule for myself: If something   (10)   me, then I have to do it at least once. I’ve done lots of things that would have shocked my  (11)  : I’ve ridden a motorcycle, and I’ve traveled in the rainforest…

There’s something else I don’t usually talk about,  (12)   is the most important part in my belief. When I was 14, my mother died suddenly in a car accident. At her funeral I remember making a   (13)  . I could either live out the rest of my life trying to be “safe”  (14)   I could be brave enough to live out a fulfilling, exciting and, yes, sometimes   (15)   life.

In the end I think she would have been   (16)  of me. Courage isn’t a natural quality of human beings. I believe that we have to   (17)   being courageous; using courage is like developing a muscle. The more often I do things that scare me or that make me uncomfortable, the more I realize that I   (18)   do a lot more than I originally thought I could do.

                (19)   I inherited (继承) my mother’s cautious nature, I’ve also come to believe that fear can be a good thing, if we   (20)   it bravely.

I love this photo very much. In the third one, there are two   (8)  .They are my friends, Tim and his brother. They are playing basketball. In the last one, I’m singing and my friends are dancing.   (9)   I see these photos, I’m very happy. They make me think of the happy   (10)  . I will keep the photos all my life.

Life has    1          for millions of teenagers across the world who now make friends online.    2           you use chat rooms, QQ,MSN or ICQ, you are    3            of a virtual community(虚拟社区).
“I rarely talk with my parents or grandparents,   4             I talk a lot with my old friends on QQ,” said Fox’s Shadow, the online nickname(网名)used by a Senior 2 girl in China .“Eighty per cent of my classmates use QQ    5            school.”
QQ is the biggest messaging    6            in China. A record 4 million people used it one Saturday night in October,    7           to Tencent, the company which developed QQ.
And Fox’s Shadow might well have been one of them. “I log in(登陆)on Friday nights, and Saturdays or Sundays when I feel    8    . I usually    9     about 10 hours chatting online every week,” she said. “But I rarely talk with   10           , especially boys or men.”
Even though she likes chatting, she is careful about making    11            with strangers online. “You don’t know    12             you’re talking to. You should    13            be careful about who you trust online.”
Many people would like to meet offline when they feel they have got to    14            someone very well. Fox’s Shadow once met one of her online friends face to face. It was a girl who was a comic fan like    15            and they went to a comic show together.
However, not all teenagers have been so    16          . At the beginning of this year, a 17-year-old girl was killed after meeting a friend she had found on QQ. The criminals weren’t    17           until last month.
A 16-year-old Beijing boy, known online as Bart Simon, dislikes QQ users. “I used to chat on QQ, but I found that most people were talking    18            ,”he said. Now he chats online in English, using MSN. But he spends little time chatting as he sees it as a   19          of time and money .“If you are really    20            to it, sometimes you just can’t concentrate in class,” he said.
