The United States Capitol Dome(圆顶) in Washington, DC, is recognized around the world as a symbol of the U.S. Government. Since last November, the dome has been surrounded by metal poles and heavy cloth as part of a repair project.

The last major repair work on the U.S. Capitol took place in 1960. Since then, the dome has become weathered and worn. The Architect of the Capitol group reports that the dome has more than 1,000 narrow breaks on its surface and other damage.

The dome was completed around 1863. U. S. Senate Historian Don Ritchie says the dome’s cast(石膏) iron frame is at special risk of weathering. “The capitol dome, being cast iron, has been hit by lightning countless times. And so the current construction is to repair the leaks, to fill the cracks, to take off extra layers of paint.”

Some recent visitors to the Capitol were unhappy about its current appearance. They had hoped to get a picture of the usually shining dome. Joyce said, “It was impressive, and very fantastic, and all white, but when I come here today, it is under construction so my family cannot see it clearly, it is kind of a disappointment.”

Others were more understanding of the repairs. Rick Jones, another visitor, said, “It’s a little inconvenient for us not to see the dome but you have to think about the future and the people will be coming to this place for centuries...and you know ,there just needs to be preventive maintenance(维护). I am not upset with that at all.”

The project is expected to take more than two years to complete. The dome should be ready for a new president in January 2017.

Long ago, poems were recited out loud instead of being written down. Back when the Greeks first started the Olympics, they held poetry contests as well as athletic competitions.

Now, poetry competitions have been revived. This year 120,000 high school students competed in the first Poetry Out Loud national recitation contest, performing poems from memory for $100,000 in prizes.

The first competitions were held in classrooms. The winners went on to school-wide contests, and then they competed in city and state competitions, and then the 50 state champions, along with the District of Columbia champion came to Washington, D. C. last week for the last showdown(对决). After the 51 champions competed against one another, 12 went on to the finals. Then the field was narrowed to five. The final five had one last chance to "perform" a poem. The overall champ, Jackson Hille, a high school senior from Ohio, won a $20,000 scholarship.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation started Poetry Out Loud because they realized that hearing a poem performed is a different experience from reading it on a page.

Itˈs not just a matter of saying the words in the right order. Itˈs the tone of voice, the pauses, the gestures, and the attitude of the person performing that bring the words to life. "Each time we hear somebody recite a poem, we understand again what we found fresh and interesting about it,” says National Public Radio broadcaster Scott Simon, master of ceremonies for the finals. Hearing it in a new voice offers something new to the listener.

Not only do the people hearing poems have a new experience, memorizing and presenting poems helps the participants understand those poems in a new way. Another benefit of a competition such as Poetry Out Loud is that the participants learn public-speaking skills that can help them for life.

              (1) From the first paragraph, we can know________.
              A. the Greeks were the first to write poems
              B. the Olympics used to start with poem reciting
              C. poems were spread orally in the past
              D. athletes were asked to recite poems before competing
              (2) How many rounds of competitions did the champions take before they went to Washington, D. C. ?
              A. Three.                  B. Four
              C. Five.                    D. Six.
              (3) According to the passage, hearing a poem recited in a new can________.
              A. bring a new life to listeners
              B. help listeners find their interest
              C. make listeners learn the words
              D. offer something new to listeners
              (4) One benefit the participants get from a competition such as Poetry Out Loud is that they can________.
              A. become confident while speaking in public
              B. write good poems themselves
              C. change their attitudes towards life
              D. make friends with many great poets
              (5) Whatˈs the best title for the passage?
              A. Reciting poems improves your memory.
              B. Remembering a lot of poems is fun.
              C. Poets have a great time.

In many ways, Providence Mount St. Vincent in Seattle is a typical senior living community. It is home to about 400 elderly residents and provides them with different types of assistance. However, it is also the Inter-generational Learning Center---a preschool where children and seniors have the chance to bond.

Established in 1991, the ILC’s purpose is to allow kids to learn about acceptance while also being nurtured(养育). It also aims to help seniors develop a greater sense of self-worth and strengthen social interactions. Babies to prekindergarten-aged children are placed into six different classes at the ILC. The kids attend art and music classes, as well as story time and exercise time with the seniors. Marie Hoover, ILC director, said that interacting with the seniors has proven beneficial for the young ones, making them more open-minded.

“For the ILC children, interacting with the residents is simply part of their day-to-day life here and the way aging is ‘normalized’ , which may be the most important benefit they receive ,” Hoover said. “ I’ve had parents call me years after their children have graduated from our program to let me know about some incidents when their child was the first to warmly greet someone who happened to be in a wheelchair.”

As for the seniors, they’re delighted by the companionship the children provide. The children bring so much energy and joy to our residents. Many of residents are widows(寡妇) or widowers and can become lonely. Their adult children may still be working, so they may not get to see them as often as they would like. Having the children stay with the old makes our residents feel they are still part of a community. The young and the old connect and learn from one another at this unique facility.

              (1) ILC is intended to _______.

              A. build a typical senior living community
              B. take good care of the children

              D. rid the seniors of loneliness

              (2) From what Hoover said in Para. 3, we can learn that the ILC children _________.

              A. keep in touch with the seniors even if they have left ILC

              B. come to realize that aging is a normal part of life

              C. take different attitudes to the elderly after graduation

              D. think it easy to interact with the elderly residents in ILC

              (3) The last paragraph mainly tells us _________.

              A. the benefits the seniors receive

              B. a typical family

In 2006, a large number of new Internet sites became popular around the world. Some of these are for communication, others for entertainment(娱乐).

The blog is one form of communication that increased in popularity. Through these personal websites(网址), people can share their lives, ideas and opinions on the Internet. People of all ages have their own blogs. For young people, they are a way to show their writing and other forms of self-expression. Blogs also connect people with other people who have the same interests. For example, teachers use blogs to share ideas with other teachers, as well as experiences and concerns about their work.

People also take part in fantasy sports leagues with the help of the Internet. A fantasy sport is a game in which each member of a group acts as the owner of a team. Each owner creates a team of real-life professional players to compete against other teams in the league. More than fifteen million American adults play fantasy sports.                A sea turtle named Herman, an octopus called Octavia, and a seal named Lidia all spent this summer at the Smithsonian’ s National Zoo in Washington, D.C. But unlike the zoo’s other residents, they are not real animals. These creatures are actually huge sculptures(雕塑) and they’re made entirely out of plastic trash from the ocean.

These giant artworks, along with 14 others, are part of a traveling exhibit called “Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea”. The Washed Ashore project, led by artist Angela Haseltine Pozzi, works to raise awareness about the problem of plastic pollution in Earth’s oceans.

More than 315 billion pounds of plastic litter the world’s oceans today. Most of the plastic is garbage from towns and cities, as well as trash(垃圾) that people leave on beaches. Rainwater, winds, and high tides bring the trash into the ocean or into rivers that lead to the ocean. Once it is under the waves, the plastic begins to break up into smaller and smaller pieces. It often collects in spots called garbage patches, which spread over large areas of the ocean.

Thousands of marine animals, including whales, sea turtles, and fish, die each year from eating or getting stuck in plastic bags and other items. Plastic pieces can also injure coral and kill sea grass.

Washed Ashore and other organizations are working to stop that from happening. Since 2010, Washed Ashore volunteers have collected 38,000 pounds of plastic trash from more than 3000 miles of beaches. They helped Pozzi create more than 60 sculptures of marine creatures that were harmed by plastic pollution.

The artworks on display at the National Zoo include a 20-foot-long coral reef, a 12-foot-long shark, and a 16-foot-long parrot fish. Each one is made from hundreds of pieces of trash like water bottles and sunglasses.

“These sculptures are a powerful reminder of our personal role and global responsibility in preserving biodiversity on land and in the sea,” says Dennis Kelly, director of the National Zoo.
