When you're on the go, your best friend and resource can be your phone. In the age of smart phones, apps are like guiding stars: They can point you in the right direction for a hotel, list expenses, send postcards, and much more. When used together, these apps can be the basic travel tool, placing a wealth of information at your fingertips no matter where you are on the planet. U.S. News Travel has picked the essential travel apps, known for their utility and reliability. Best of all, they cost absolutely nothing.

              Trip It

              Your Personal Travel Agent

Be your own travel agent and plan every detail of your trip—from car rental to accommodating restaurants—with Trip It. You can make travel schedule by hand, or simply forward the email confirmations of your flight, rental car, train tickets, and hotels to plans.

              Weather Free

              Your Go-To Meteorologist(气象学者)

Stop trying to explain the weather forecast on the evening news (particularly when it's in a foreign language). The Weather Free app informs you (in English) of the climate in various locations. It features the local weather, and other key factors that will inform your decision about what to wear before stepping outside.

              Goby

              Your Event Guru

When you're in a foreign city, you sometimes look around and ask: Where are all the people? Goby has the answer. This app pinpoints the neighborhood hot spots (including museums, hotels, eateries, and more) in your neighborhood. But its true value comes in finding nearby events. You'll discover concerts, plays, and more right around the corner.

              (1) What is the advantage of using travel apps picked by the U.S. NewsTravel?

Manufacturers, sellers, and advertisers love to tell us that advertising will save us money. They are always convincing us that placing ads in and on everything from video games to toilet paper will save consumers money through the theory that the advertising pays the cost of part of the item or the service, allowing the seller or provider to charge less than they otherwise would.

                  Nonsense !

A couple of years ago, I planned to buy a Kindle (一种电子书阅读器). I decided to choose the one with the ads or "Special Offers" as Amazon called it, due to the overall purchase price, which was lower, and the promises of money-saving offers and in addition, I would have to accept the basic ads. Well, things were good for about six months. I did indeed receive some offers such as $10 off a $50 purchase, or the opportunity to buy certain books for only $1.Then the offers dried up when the Kindle Fire came out. Suddenly the majority of the special offers were restricted to (限于) Kindle Fire owners. Now there are very few offers for them either. The only things I now receive are true ads: Things for me to look at, but which hold no value for me at all. The advertising I ever allowed because I thought it was supposed to be a benefit to me is no longer benefiting me.

Frankly, it makes me mad. I fell for the "Advertising will save you money" strategy that so mand sellers like to throw around. I did my research and thought that it would be different with the Kindle. But it wasn't. Once they needed to sell a different product, those holding the older product got left behind. And now that they need to cut profit margins (利润率), even those holding the newer product are not receiving the offers that came in tile "heyday (全盛期)" of the special offers. Sure, you pay a little bit less for the model that displays ads, but beyond that the money-saving aspect is long gone.

              (1) The author thinks ads ________.
              A. won't bring customers good value as described
              B. actually benefit the producers in many ways
              C. can't make targeted customers know the goods
              D. pay for services for the customers in new ways
              (2) Why did the author choose to buy the Kindle with the ads?
              A. Because of his faith in the quality of the goods.
              B. Because other customers recommended it strongly.
              C. Because he was persuaded by the shopkeeper.
              D. Because of the attractive prices and promised offers.
              (3) Through the experience of buying the Kindle, the author realized that ________.
              A. customers just need to receive and enjoy the ads at home
              B. the prices offered in the ads were a good value for customers
              C. ads wouldn't always bring customers expected benefits
              D. the higher the prices, the better the quality
              (4) The underlined words "fell for" in the last paragraph mean ________.
              A. behaved well to make somebody believe something
              B. was tricked into believing something that was not true
              C. was encouraged to buy or to use new products
              D. did something in the same way as someone else did
              (5) By writing the text, the author mainly wants to ________.
              A. expose the lies behind the special prices
              B. find more strategies to resist the mean sellers
              C. warn us not to believe what attractive ads say
              D. tell us we can save money after choosing special offers

              Dear Jack,

I just moved to the Midwest from Florida, and I'm determined to keep running outdoors. I've figured out the clothes for my body but still struggle to keep my hands warm on long runs. Do you have any magic method to share? Thank you!

              Jeff

              Dear Jeff,

Although running outside in the Windy City in the dead of winter may draw looks of concern from your new friends, it truly can be a magical experience. I've had the chance to test out many glove combinations in my twenty-two running winters, and here are a few options that have worked well for me.

For runs that are at 32 °F(0℃)and warmer, many runners including myself keep their hands with warm traditional running gloves like Agloves, or if you're on a tight budget, a cheap pair of stretchy synthetic(有弹性的合成的) gloves you can find at your local store.

If the wind reaches 32 °F and colder, your extremities are at more risk of getting cold, especially because you're moving your hands back and forth cutting through the wind. In his case, go with a warmer, thicker glove like the B -rooks Vapor Dry, Mountain Harwear.

In the event of extreme weather, a layering(分层)system will work well. The great thing about this is that you can mix and match with various weights of gloves to see what works for you. You might start with a wool glove liner(衬里)to absorb the wet and cover with thick wool to block the wind, keep you dry, and create a layer of warm air between the two gloves. Lightweight and thick wool gloves with layers might meet your demands for gloves in much lower temperatures in winter.

For those who have bad circulation or enjoy super warm, add a heated hand warmer packet in your glove and your running partners will wonder what you're smiling about. It's funny how a little luxury like heated hand warmers can make your day(or your long run). I used these and a ThermaCare back warmer when I raced the Antarctica Marathon. It was 40 mph winds and snow was over my head. But my hands were smiling the entire time!
