Thanks to modern technology, today’s false teeth are almost the same as real teeth. This was not always the case. Originally false teeth were neither comfortable nor durable ( 耐久的). As dentists tried to improve false teeth, they tried many different materials and techniques.

Ivory was one of the earliest materials used to replace lost teeth. These teeth tended to become bad soon and rarely looked natural, but got the job done. Ivory was still used for the base of false teeth, even after quality human teeth became more available near the end of the 18th century.

Human teeth were one of the best materials. The source of these teeth came from dead bodies, poor people looking to make money, and even dentists’ collections. Understandably, these teeth were of poor quality, which meant that they needed to be removed when people were eating.

Porcelain (瓷) false teeth were invented in the late 1700s in France. However, they tended to crack easily, which made them unpopular choices. It wasn’t until after many improvements had been made in the late 1800s that false teeth made of porcelain became a popular choice and replaced previous materials. Porcelain is still a popular choice for many dental applications.

In the mid-1800s, vulcanized rubber (硫化橡胶) was invented and was used to hold false teeth. Because other kinds of false teeth were more expensive, vulcanized rubber false teeth soon became popular.

Luckily for us, new technologies and materials were invented in the 20th century for false teeth. Today’s false teeth are mostly made of plastic or ceramics ( 陶瓷). Plastics are easy to get, so the price of false teeth is also considerably lower. Modern false teeth are more comfortable, easier to chew with, and last longer than teeth made in the past.

For years, humans have made war with the dandelion (蒲公英). Most people consider dandelions annoying weeds, and try to get rid of them. They usually pull them up by the roots, or use chemicals to kill the plants. But our war with the dandelion may soon be over.

Although considered weeds, it’s no secret that dandelions have their uses. Young dandelion leaves make a delicious salad. Dandelion plants have a long, thin root called a taproot, which grows deep into the soil. The taproot creates paths in the soil, which allow water and air to mix in and keep soil healthy. Dandelion flowers also attract ladybugs, which can help kill small insect pests in gardens. However, most people still think of dandelions as simple weeds. It’s the sap (汁液), though, that just might change their minds.

If you’ve ever picked a dandelion, you’ve probably noticed the milky sap that comes out from the stem. Dandelion sap is a natural source of rubber (橡胶). Around 30,000 different products are made from rubber today. Most of these products are made from rubber that comes from the rubber tree. But there are problems with these products. Some people have a serious allergy(过敏症)to this kind of rubber. And for some reason, many of the rubber trees on our planet are nowdying off. These trees take years to grow, so theyare not easy to replace.

Scientists are starting to look at dandelion sap as a possible good source of rubber for the future. Dandelions are easy to plant and they grow quickly. People who are allergic to rubber products made from rubber trees are not likely to be allergic

to dandelion rubber. Still, scientists have some questions they need to answer before we can make dandelions our main source of rubber. Some scientists believe that in less than five years, we will have those answers and will finally end the war with this so-called weed. When we make peace with the dandelion, at long last, we’ll be

planting it, instead of pulling it!

            • 8. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Are we alone in the universe? It’s a question astronomers have thought about eversince we discovered theEarth was not the only planet in the universe.

But, while we carry out searches for habitable planets and even signals from anintelligent race, someexperts have warned that making firstcontact(接触) could bedisastrous. They say that if we were tobroadcast our position, it could invite an unfriendlyalien(外星球的) race to our doorstep—and finallymean the end of us.

Physicist and author Dr David Brin, speaking at the event, was one leading the call forcaution(谨慎) rather than contact.“Is there a chance, however small, that in making itselfknown to aliens, humanity couldbe about to make a huge mistake?”he said.“We live inthis jungle neighborhood where it’s quiet, and if youare a toddler (a very young child whois just learning to walk), it’s best to talk it over with the other toddlersbefore screamingyoo-hoo!”

However, others say we should not fear such a situation at all—and in fact, failing tomake contact couldprove to be a huge mistake. Dr Seth Shostak, Director of SETI (Searchfor Extraterrestrial Intelligence),argues that any aliens able to travel between the starswould be at least several centuries more advancedthan us. They would almost certainlyhave already spotted the human race, so there is no point hiding theEarth from them now.

It may be that ETs have been waiting for the Earth to call them, he added. For thisreason, some have beensuggesting Active SETI—which involves sending out messagesto try to contact, rather than trying tolisten to someone else’s conversation. If we avoidActive SETI, we could lose out.“The biggest downside ofnot doing Active SETI is wemay miss an opportunity for contact,”said Dr Shostak. He also argued that weshould sendaliens as much information as possible so that they can learn about the human race.
