Hundreds of years ago, news was carried from place to place by people on foot or by horse. It took days, weeks and sometimes months for people to receive news. Now it is possible to send words and pictures around the world in seconds. Billions of people learn about news stories of their own country and all over the world every day, either by watching TV or reading newspapers.

Newspapers have been an important part of everyday life since the 18th century. Many countries have hundreds of different newspapers. How do newspaper editors decide which news stories to print? Why do they print some stories and not others? What makes a good newspaper story?

Firstly, it is important to report news stories. TV stations can report news much faster than newspapers. Yet, newspapers give more about the same story. They may also look at the story in another way, or they may print completely different stories to those on TV.

Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People don’t want to read stories about everyday life. As a result, many stories are about some kind of danger and seem to be “bad” news. For example, newspapers never print stories about planes landing safely; instead they print stories about plane accidents.

Another factor (因素) is also very important in many news stories. Many people are interested in news in foreign countries, but more prefer to read stories about people, places and events in their own country. So the stories on the front page in Chinese newspapers are usually very different from the ones in British, French and American newspapers.

Men and women are regarded to have different roles in the society.

In a family where the roles of men and women are not sharply separated and where many household tasks are shared to a greater or lesser extent, notions of male superiority are hard to maintain. The pattern of sharing in tasks and indecision makes for equality and this in turn leads to further sharing. In such a home, the growing boy and girl learn to accept equality more easily than did their parents and to prepare more fully for participation in a world characterized by cooperation rather than by the “battle of the sexes”.

If the process goes too far and man’s role is regarded as less important – and that has happened in some cases – we are as badly off as before, only in reverse.

It is time to reassess the role of the man in the American family. We are getting a little tired of“Momism” – but we don't want to exchange it for a“neo-Popism”. What we need, rather, is the recognition that bringing up children involves a partnership of equals. There are signs that psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and specialists on the family are becoming more aware of the part men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all the credit – nor the blame. We have almost given up saying that a woman’s place is in the home. We are beginning, however, to analyse man’s place in the home and to insist that he does have a place in it. Nor is that place irrelevant to the healthy development of the child.

The family is a co-operative enterprise for which it is difficult to lay down rules, because each family needs to work out its own ways for solving its own problems.

Excessive authoritarianism(命令主义)has unhappy consequences, whether it wears skirts or trousers, and the ideal of equal rights and equal responsibilities is pertinent(相关的,切题的) not only to a healthy democracy, but also to a healthy family.

On January 13, 2016, France became the first country in the world to pass a law requiring supermarkets to donate (捐赠) food that is nearing its expiration date (截止日期) instead of throwing it away. The law requires supermarkets over 4,000 square feet to make an agreement with local food banks.

The law also does not allow stores to crush (压碎) or pour water over food that is about to expire, or store it inside until it is picked up by garbage trucks. These actions are often taken by supermarkets to keep away the hungry from finding this kind of food in the rubbish.

Also, factories producing products like milk for supermarkets, are now allowed to donate goods directly to the food banks. Though they have always been able to do that, the former law made it difficult for them to give away the food in a timely manner.

The law also requires the charities receiving the donations to store the food in a safe and clean manner and, more importantly, give it out with dignity. This means that they should send it to people in need from a food bank where they can communicate with them, instead of just handing it out on the streets.

France’s food banks are of course excited about the possibility of receiving extra food, like meat, vegetables, and fruit. Jacques Bailet, who heads a network of French food banks, says that of the 110,000 tons of goods received every year, only 36,000 tons come from supermarkets. Bailet guesses that just a 15% increase in supermarket donations would change to over 10 million additional meals to feed the hungry each year.

Though this is a great first step, Arash Dermabarsh, the activist responsible for the movement that led to the law, points that it is not done. He now wants to extend (扩展) the law to other places like restaurants, bakeries, and school cafeterias.

Why doesn’t the unemployment rate ever reach zero? Economists, who generally believe that supply tends to meet demand, have long thought about this question. Even in good times, i.e. not now, there are people who can’t find work. And even in bad times, i.e. now, there are job openings. With over 14 million people out of work and looking for a job, you would think every available job would be filled. But that’s not the case. Not now and not ever.

On Monday, the Nobel Prize committee awarded the prize for economics to the three scholars who have done the most to explain this phenomenon. Two of the winners are Americans, Peter Diamond of MIT and Dale Mortensen of Northwestern. The third winner is Christopher Pissarides, who teaches at the London School of Economics and was born on Cyprus.

Like most of economists, what they have found about why the jobless and ready-employers don’t find each other seems obvious. You have to find out there is job opening you are interested in. Employers need to get resumes. It takes a while for both employers and employees to make the decision that this is what they want. And these guys came up with a framework to study the problem of why people stay unemployed longer than they should and what can be done about it.

So what would today’s Nobel Prize winners do to solve the current problem of the unemployed? And does the awarding of the prize contribute to the politicians’ lowering joblessness?

Speaking from his north London home, Pissarides told The Associated Press the announcement came as “a complete surprise” though his work had already helped shape thinking on both sides of the Atlantic.

For example, the New Deal for Young People, a British government policy aimed at getting 18-24-year-olds back on the job market after long periods of unemployment, “It is very much based on our work,” he said.

“One of the key things we found is that it is important to make sure that people do not stay unemployed too long so they don’t lose their feel for the labor force,” Pissarides told reporters in London. “The ways of dealing with this need not be expensive training – it could be as simple as providing work experience.”

                  When is Canada Day 2016?

Canada Day 2016 is Friday, July 1st. This day is a statutory (法定的) hohday, meaning a large percentage of the population gets the day off and in turn, many retailers, government offices, libraries, schools and services shut down. Employees at most workplaces do not have to go to work but will still receive their regular pay. Celebrations such as fireworks or parades will ganerally be held on this day.

                  Canada Day Overview

Canada Day is celebrated on July 1st across the country. July 1st marks the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation (联邦) under the name of Canada—that's the technical explanation, but Canada Day also means fireworks and the year's biggest national party.

What to Expect on Canada Day

Schools, banks, government offices and many other stores and businesses are closed on July 1st (and July 2nd if the 1st falls on a Sunday). Most tourist destinations, including shopping mails will stay open. Some stores will have holiday hours. Call ahead to restaurants, stores and tourist attractions to confirm Canada Day hours.

Typically, Canada Day celebrations include parades, fireworks, barbecues and other get-togethers.

                  Canada Day in Quebec

In Quebec, Canada Day is not celebrated as fervently (热烈地) as in the rest of the country. Federal offices, schools, banks are closed but many people in Quebec look on July 1st as “moving day,” as this date has been historically the end of lease agree (租赁协议).

                  Canada Day Dates

Thursday, July 1, 2010 (many people also take Friday, July 2, as a holiday as well)

                  Friday, July 1, 2011

Sunday, July 1, 2012, but the statutory holiday is on Monday, July 2, 2012

                  Monday, July 1, 2013

                  Tuesday, July 1, 2014

                  Wednesday, July 1, 2015

                  Friday, July 1, 2016

                  Saturday, July 1, 2017

                  Sunday, July 1, 2018

According to sociologists(社会学家), every modern industrial society has some form of social stratification(阶层). Class, power and status are important in deciding peopleˈs rank in society.

Class means a personˈs economic position in society. A commonly used classification is lower class, middle class and upper class. While sociologists disagree on how these terms should be exactly defined, they do describe societies like the United States quite well. One study shows that 53% of Americans belong to the lower class, 46% the middle class, and 1% the upper class. Interestingly, a surgeon earning $500,000 a year and a bus driver earning $50,000 a year both regard themselves as the middle class!

Power refers to the amount of control a person has over other people. Obviously, people in positions of great power (such as governors) exercise(行使)big power, but people who take orders from others have less power. Power and class do not always go hand in hand, however. For example, the governor of a state has great power, but he or she may not belong to a corresponding (相应的)economic class. Generally, however, there is a relationship between power and class. To our knowledge, there arenˈt too many people who arenˈt millionaires in the U.S. Senate!

Status is the honor or respect attached to a personˈs position in society. It can also be affected by power and class, but not necessarily so. For example, a university professor may have a high status but not belong to a high social class or have a lot of power over others.
