                 A Canine Reading Buddy

Dogs and people have developed a special bond over time. Recently, however, some dogs have taken a different role in people’s lives—therapy dogs.  (1)   Some therapy dogs visit patients in hospitals or nursing homes, while others visit children in schools and libraries. They are there to help children become better readers.

Reading programs that use therapy dogs have been in existence for morethan ten years. All therapy dogs of this program are registered with an organizationthat tests the dogs to make sure they have the right personality for the job.  (2)   Both the dogs and the handlers are volunteers with the reading program.

At the start of a reading therapy session, a child and a dog are introduced. The pair is allowed to settle down in a quiet corner together.  (3)  An adult handler stays nearby but generally lets the dog perform its job without interfering(干涉). Sometimes, a handler may ask a question that encourages the child to work with the dog to help the child feel more comfortable.

Not every child will be able to be part of a reading therapy program that uses dogs. A few children might be allergic to dogs or afraid of them; some children might have cultural traditions that prevent them from touching a dog.  (4)

Reading therapy programs inspire learning and change.  (5)   They spend time with human friends. For dogs that love human companionship and a quiet place to rest, being part of a reading therapy program can be a great way to spend a few hours each day. The readers benefit too, gaining confidence and learning that reading aloud can be a relaxing experience.

                (1)  She described all the things she had to do -one was to make her bed-from the moment she woke up until she flew out of the door for work. I suggested she experiment by not making her bed for two weeks. She was shocked, probably thinking I’d been raised by wolves in a forest.   (2)

Two weeks later she went into my office beaming. She had left her bed unmade for the first time in 42 years-and nothing bad had happened.“And you know what?” she said.“I don’t dry my dishes anymore, either.”

                (3)  One was discovering that she had choices in her life that she had never seen before. The other was giving herself permission to be less that perfect. This story shows an important principle (原理) about managing time: No one can do it all. Each of us has to make choices and accept trade – offs. The problem is, many people choose in ways that put themselves and their health last. They take better care of their houses and cars than they do of themselves.  (4)

So what is the solution? There’s an easy way. Decide what you want in your life, and put that first. On a daily basis, that should include regular meals, enough sleep and time with your family. Exercise, leisure, friendships and hobbies should also be regular aspects of life.  (5)     The choice is yours: whatever makes you feel good about yourself and your life. Take a nap(小憩).Take a walk. Take time to play the piano. Stop bringing your briefcase home from the office. Stop keeping your house as clean as your mother kept hers. Fill more of your time with want – to – dos instead of have – to – dos.

Have you ever met someone and walked away with"fool"or"loser"in mind? Are you afraid of being that someone and having others not like or understand you?Happily, you can get rid of these worries and fears by learning some effective skills on how to make a great and lasting first impression.Let's get started.

Talk about your interests and hobbies.  (1)  .It is always a great conversation starter!Ask if they like a specific band or singer. The more you have in common, the easier it will be to carry on the conversation.

Smile.Especially when first meeting someone. It's not necessary to show your teeth, just a meaningful grin(露齿而笑) will do.  (2)  ,or people will feel you're being fake or that you don't like them.

                (3)  .Stay focused on the person you are speaking with and certainly not on anything else to avoid them feeling unappreciated and unwanted.Often if the person has an eye problem, like an eye that turns in,you're put off by this.Instead, focus on the person's nose or mouth.

Have a sense of humor.Born funny people are just themselves and the humor shows.Don't worry if you are not a born funny person.  (4)  .Don't keep serious all the time while you are talking to a new friend.

Be yourself.Don't pretend to be someone you're not,or you are stuck with that label forever.Be yourself. That may be what everyone says but it is entirely true!  (5)  .If somebody finds out you have been lying to him or her, they will be very hurt and it will be hard for them to forgive you easily.
