If you are studying at school, do be a polite and clever student! There is no excuse for not doing your assignments(作业). If you can't come to school, you should call your teacher or your classmate and ask about homework. It is your responsibility to find out what homework you have missed. It is not the teacher's job to remind you of the missed assignments.

You must not be absent on a test day. If you are seriously ill, call and let the teacher know you will not be there for the test. If your teacher allows a make-up test, you should take the test again within one or two days after you return to class. Serious illness is the only reason for missing a test.

Be on time! It is impolite to be late. Also, it bothers other students. If you must come in late, be sure to do it quietly. Have your books and papers out of your bag before you come into the room. Then go to your seat and sit down quietly. In the USA, it is not necessary to knock before you enter the classroom. Most teachers will give you a low grade if you are often late.

In America, you should call your teacher by his or her last name instead of "teacher". Also you should use Mr, Miss, Ms or Mrs before the last name (such as Mrs Smith or Mr Jones). This is polite. The teacher will tell you the title that he or she likes. It is impolite in the USA to eat, drink or chew gum during class. Don't do these until the break. Also, removing your shoes in the classroom is not polite.

It's a nightly puzzle in many families: A student hits a wall doing homework, and parents are too tired or too busy to help.

Ordering a tutor is becoming as easy for kids as grabbing a late-night snack. With the rapid growth of companies offering online tutoring, students can use a credit card to connect.sometimes

in less than a minute,a live tutor such services can be especially helpful for students with tight budgets or tight time frames or those in remote areas.Prices, ranging from about $24 to $45 an hour, are lower than what many skilled tutors charge in a student's home And parents and students say the quick homework aid can ease stress and make evening at home more peaceful.

“The quality of online learning support can be unequal, and online tutors may not be the best for struggling students who need sustained(持久的)help.Courses can break down due to technical problems.and language barriers can cause problems on sites that rely on tutors from abroad,”says Michael Horn, executive director of education for the Clayton Christensen Institute.

Most sites get the support from part-time nr retired teachers, college professors or professionals with tutoring experience;most offer scheduled tutoring in addition to on-demand courses. The most common users are middle school students, and college students taking basic

Yamini Naidu, president of the National School Public Relations Association, says,”Students who come to courses with a list of question or assignments to work on-and who spare time to concentrate-benefit most.Online tutors fill a huge gap that can never be filled by parents.”

            • 5. Most American students go to traditional public schools. There are about 88,000 public schools all over the US.Some students attend about 3000 independent public schools called charter schools.
Charter schools are self-governing.Private companies operate some charter schools. They are similar in some ways to traditional public schools. They receive tax money just as other public schools do.Charter schools must prove to local or state governments that their students are learning. These governments provide the schools with the agreement called a charter that permits them to operate.
Charter schools are different because they do not have to obey most laws governing traditional public schools.Local state,or federal governments cannot tell them what to teach. Each school can choose its own goals and decide the ways it wants to reach them.Class size is usually smaller than in traditional public schools.
The Bush Administration strongly supports charter schools as a way to re-organize public schools that are failing to educate students. But some education agencies and unions oppose charter schools. One teachers'union has just made public the results of the first national study comparing the progress of students in traditional schools and charter schools.
The American Federation of Teachers criticized the government's delay in releasing the results of the study, which is called the National Assessment of Educational Progress.Union education experts say the study shows that charter school students performed worse on math and reading tests than students in regular public schools.
Some experts say the study is not a fair look at charter schools because students in those schools have more problems than students in traditional schools.Other education experts say the study results should make charter school officials demand improved student progress.

Kids love the all-knowing Google.Your kids likely use Google to help them find everything from information for homework assignments,to funny cat videos, and everything in between.Sometimes kids can take a"wrong turn"on Google and end up in a dark part of the Internet where they shouldn't be.Thankfully,Google has some parental control features that parents can implement to at least help reduce the volume(量) of crap(废物) that ends up in search results, which can enable you to help keep your curious kids from ending up on the wrong side of the tracks.
What is Google SafeSearch?Google SafeSearch is one of the primary parental control options offered by Google to help parents police search results.SafeSearch helps to filter explicit(明确的)content out of search results. It is mainly designed to target sexually explicit material (images and videos) and not violent content.
How to Enable Google SafeSearch?1.From the"Search Settings"preferences page, place a check in the box with the label"Filter explicit results".2.To lock this setting so that your child can't change it,click the"Lock SafeSearch"link. If you are not already logged into your Google account, you will need to do so in order to lock SafeSearch to the"on"position.
Enable SafeSearch on Mobile Devices. In addition to your computer, you will probably also want to enable SafeSearch on any mobile device that your child uses regularly. For instructions on how to enable SafeSearch on a variety of mobile devices, check out Google's SafeSearch Mobile support page.As we all know, kids are going to be kids and try to test their boundaries. We put up one roadblock and they go around it.It's a constant cat and mouse game and there will always be some internet door that we as parents forget to lock, and that will be the one that the kids get through, but we do the best we can.

See a cellphone cover that you like on Taobao?Forget about placing an order, paying the bill online and waiting for days for it to be delivered to you.In the near future, you'll be able to get it in minutes just by hitting"print"on your computer. You might find it hard to believe that you could actually"print"an object like you would a picture. But it is not that hard to understand how it would work.Just as a traditional printer sprays ink onto paper line by line, modern 3D printers spread material onto a surface layer by layer, from the bottom to the top, gradually building up a shape.Instead of ink,the materials the 3D printer uses are mainly plastic, resin and certain metals. The thinner each layer is-from a millimetre to less than the width of a hair-the smoother and finer the object will be.This may sound like a completely new technology, but the truth is that 3D printing has been around since the late 1980s.Back then,it was barely affordable for most people,so few knew about it.Last year, though, saw a big change in the 3D printing industry-printers became much cheaper. For example,10years ago a desktop 3D printer might have cost£20,000,while now they cost only about£1,000,according to the BBC.Taken out of the factory and introduced to more diverse and common uses,3D printing can create just about anything you can think of-flutes,bikinis,jewelry,aircraft parts and even human organs. In fact, scientists from Cornell University in New York have just made an artificial ear using a 3D printer, according to Science Daily. The fake ear looks and acts exactly like a natural one. However,as 3D printing becomes more common,it may bring about certain problems-such as piracy."Once you can download a coffee maker,or print out a new set of kitchen utensils on your personal 3D printer, who will visit a retail store again?"an expert in 3D printing told Forbes News.Even more frightening, what if anyone in the world could use a 3D printer to print out a fully functioning gun?
            • 8. EDGEWOOD-Every morning at Dixie Heights High school, customers pour into a special experiment:the district's first coffee shop run mostly by students with special learning needs.
Well before classes start, students and teachers order Lattes,Cappuccinos and Hot Chocolates. Then, during the first period, teachers call in orders on their room phones, and students make deliveries.By closing time at 9:20a.m.,the shop usually sells 90drinks."Whoever made the chi tea,Ms.Schatzman says it was good,"Christy McKinley,a second year student, announced recently, after hanging up with the teacher.
The shop is called the Dixie PIT,which stands for Power in Transition.Although some of the students are not disabled, many are,and the PIT helps them prepare for life after high school. They learn not only how to run a coffee shop but also how to deal with their affairs. They keep a timecard and receive paychecks, which they keep in check registers.
Special-education teachers Kim Chevalier and Sue Casey introduced the Dixie PIT from a similar program at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Georgia. Not that it was easy.Chevalier's first problem to overcome was product-related.Should schools be selling coffee? What about sugar content?Kenton County Food Service Director Ginger Gray helped. She made sure all the drinks, which use non-fat milk, fell within nutrition guidelines.
            • 9. Believe it or not, optical illusion(错觉) can cut highway crashes.
Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75percent using a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons(人字形),painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are,and thus drivers slow down.
Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C.is planning to repeat Japan's success.Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.
Excessive (too great) speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards (danger) are the greatest curves (曲线),exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.
Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially(最初) cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.
Chevrons, scientists say,not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

For a long time being happy was considered something that just happened, and there was nothing special about it.Now we know that getting along with other people is something that we can work at.It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better. One way is being unselfish, not wanting everything from our friends.Another way is to look for good points, not bad ones in other people. It is surprising how successful this treasure hunt can be.
You don't have to be spineless(没有骨气的) in order to be popular. In fact, you will be liked and respected if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights. But do it politely and pleasantly.Being friendly and polite to your group,to other people and to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character.
You can not expect to be perfect, and you must learn not to be unhappy when you make mistakes.Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed unless he refuses to learn from them. Many young people become discouraged when they know in themselves qualities that they do not like-selfishness,laziness,and other unpleasant qualities.Just remember that we all have some of these faults and have to fight against them.
At the same time,it is important to remember that, while you are probably no worse than others, the best way to be happy is to think yourself above other people. When something is wrong,it is good sense to try to make it right.Perhaps you don't like a teacher or a classmate.Try to see why and look at yourself, too,to be sure that you are not doing anything to make that person dislike you. Some day, things may turn out all right and then you will have to learn to get along the best with situation, without thinking too much about it.Worrying never helps in a situation you can't change.
