Today I went to Sam's school in the UK.It was different from my school in China.
The uniforms were a lot more suitlike.Girls wore gray skirts and white shirts, boys wore smart gray trousers, and everyone wore the school tie.
We arrived at 8:30am for registration, and lessons began at 9am.Like all 15 to16 yearolds in the UK,Sam is taking her GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) exams this summer.Once you've completed these, you can choose whether to do two more years of school and take your"Alevel exams",which you need to go to university; do a vocational qualification (职业资格); or leave school and try to get a job.Everyone has to take GCSE English language, math ("maths"in the UK) and science.Because Sam wants to go to university to become a lawyer, she's doing nine GCSEs in total. She'll need to get top grades, the highest being an A.
Some of Sam's lessons were a bit strange for me.We were reading Shakespeare in the English lesson, and there were all sorts of oldfashioned words like"thou"and"thee"to mean"you".In history we studied 20th Century China. It was strange hearing a foreign side of history and hearing English people trying to say all our Chinese names!
Classes were a lot smaller than in China; there were only between 15and 30students in each class! They were also a lot more relaxed.Male teachers were called"Sir"and female teachers"Miss"out of respect, but everyone shouted out answers and waved their hands in lessons. It was more like a debate than a class.A bell rang at the end of each lesson and everyone leapt up to go to the next class.
At break we bought crisps and biscuits in the canteen.Lunch was later than in China-at 1o'clock.We had big plates of"shepherd's pie"-minced meat topped with mashed potato-together with peas and carrots. For dessert there was hot sweet rice called"rice pudding"with jam in it.
It was good that I'd had a decent lunch, because at Sam's school,Monday afternoons are taken up with sport.I had my first introduction to the British game of netball-a bit like basketball.Luckily I'd had a quick look in the rulebook (规则手册) before I tried to join in the game.

There's another reason to clean those running shoes.Energetic exercise may help prevent vision(视力) loss, according to a pair of studies from the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The research offers hope for people trying to find ways of eye diseases.
"Besides getting eye exams, people can take a more active part in protecting their eyesight,"says Paul Williams, who carried out the research."The studies suggest that people can perhaps reduce their danger of these diseases by taking part in a fitness treatment that includes enough exercise."
Cataract(白内障) is the leading cause of blindness.More than one half of people in the US over the age of 65 suffer from some form of cataracts.
Diseases have several known reasons, such as sunlight exposure and diabetes(糖尿病) in the case of cataracts. Now,it appears that enough exercise may be one way to treat the disease.
To carry out the research,Williams examined information collected in the National Runners'Health Study, which he set up in 1991 to find out the health help of running.
In this case,he followed about 29,000 male runners and 12,000 female runners for more than seven years.Of these people,733 men reported being diagnosed(诊断) with cataracts filled out at the end of the study.Too few women reported cataracts to follow.
Men who ran more than 5.7 miles per day had a 35 percent lower risk of developing cataracts than men who ran less than 1.4 miles per day.The study also studied men's 10 kilometer race performances, which is a good sign of complete fitness.

Do you jump out of bed early, wide awake and ready to start your day?If so,you would be considered an"early bird".Perhaps, though, you hate the sound of your alarm clock each morning and have little energy until afternoon. If that's the case, you're probably a"night owl".
Most of us fall into one of these two groups, but what makes us this way?And is one better than the other? There are different opinions.
Traditionally, early risers have been praised as hardworking. On the other hand, those who prefer to sleep in and get up late are considered lazy. But even in the 21st century, most people still believe the early bird catches the worm.
Yet some scientists now believe"night owls"can really focus longer and produce more than early risers.
Research has found that the early bird does not always get the worm.In a Belgian study, both"morning people"and"evening people"were watched during their normal asleep and awake routines(常规).After 10hours of being awake, the"evening people"became more alert.However.the"morning people"became sleepy and less focused.Researchers believe the reason for this difference is that night owls receive a lastminute increase of energy from their brains. This added energy allows them to stay alert for longer periods of time.
Environment, lifestyle, activities and childhood routines all may have an effect on sleeping habits, yet genetics(遗传学)may play the biggest role.
It is possible to change your sleeping habits through regular bedtimes, early exercise and by avoiding midnight snacks. But if you're happy rising early or staying up late, you're probably doing what works best for your own personal body clock.

In this world, it may seem impossible to find happy thoughts to occupy your mind. Many people are caught up in work and the everyday tasks that take so much energy to complete. The truth is that when you fill your mind with positive, happy thoughts, it actually gives you a better quality of life and helps you cope with those everyday stresses.
Begin with a quiet setting or put on soft, relaxing music. Take ten deep breaths, breathe in through your nose and slowly blow out through your mouth. Ten to twenty minutes is a good amount of time to clear your mind of the pressures of the day. This is also a great way to calm your mind and find that inner peace that seemed to disappear while driving in morning traffic and solving all the problems of the day.
When you think happy thoughts, it brings the positive attitude to the surface. Each day think of those in your life who bring you joy. List them in your mind, one by one. Your family, your friends and the kind gentleman that held the door open for you today. Look for the joy in your day rather than focus on the negative(消极的).This kind of thought process builds a positive attitude. This attitude will become a habit and will make your mind focus on the pleasant people you have encountered.
When you think of others rather than yourself, you can't help but feel better and experience happy thoughts. When you bring joy to others, it is returned to you over and over again. Think of the elderly neighbor lady and take her a bouquet(花束).Regardless of the act of kindness, giving from your heart will make up a strong character and give you great happiness.
Filling your mind with happy thoughts may be a challenge on many days; however, taking the time to concentrate on the good things can be a life changing experience. Happiness and peace come from within. When you think of all the good you have done for others, happy thoughts will fill your mind and your heart.

There are thousands of products of all colors and shapes in a supermarket, making you believe that they are worth a try. How? Packaging (包装) is the silent but persuading salesman .

There on the shelves, each bottle, can, box, and jar has been carefully designed and measured to speak to the inner self of the consumer (消费者), so that is buying not only a product but also his belief in life. Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found that the look of the package has a great effect on the “quality” of the product and on how well it sells, because “Consumers generally cannot tell between a product and its package. Many products are packages and many packages are products,” as Louis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers’ feeling for packaging, noticed.

Colors are one of the best tools in packaging. Studies of eye movement have shown that colors draw human attention quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that it is very good for your body. And the word “green” today can keep food prices going up.

Shapes are another attraction. Circles often suggest happiness and peacefulness, because these shapes are pleasing to both the eye and the heart. That’s why the round yellow M signs of McDonald’s are inviting to both young and old.

This new consumer response (反应) to the colors and shapes of packages reminds producers and sellers that people buy to satisfy both body and soul.

              (1)   According to the passage, ________ seems to be able to persuade a consumer to buy the product.

              A. the pleasing color of the package
              B. the special taste of the product

              D. the belief in the product
              (2)   If a package or a product is round in shape, it can ________.

              A. bring excitement to the consumers
              B. attract the consumers’ attention
              C. catch the eye movement of the consumers
              D. produce a happy and peaceful feeling
              (3)   “And the word ‘green’ today can keep food prices going up.” This sentence suggests that consumers today are ________.

              B. enjoying the beauty of nature more than before
              C. beginning to like green vegetables

              C. iced drink    D. red vegetable

As I walked down the street, I saw another kid walking with his father,  (19)   I gave him the little toy. Then, I walked on, hoping that two people would have a   (20)  smile on their faces that day.

Millions of Americans return from long- distance trips by air, but their baggage doesn't always come home with them. The airlines collect the items and, for 90 days, try to find their owners. If they have no luck, they are left holding the bags of thousands of travelers. They don't keep them, since they're not in the warehouse business. And by law, they cannot sell the bags, because the airlines might be attracted to deliberately(故意地)misplace baggage.
So once insurance companies have paid for lost bags and their contents, and they no longer belong to passengers, a unique store in the little town of Scottsboro, Alabama, buys them.
The Unclaimed(无人认领的)Baggage Center has turned little Scottsboro in Alabama into a tourist place. It is so popular that the building, which is set up like a department store, is the number-one tourist attraction in all of Alabama. More than one million visitors stop in each year and take one of the store's noisy shopping carts on a hunt for treasures.
The Unclaimed Baggage Center has unique items lost by travelers, and whole bags of items found in shipments that for some reason never got delivered. You can find everything from valuable jewels to hockey sticks, best-selling novels, leather jackets, tape recorders, surfboards, even half-used tubes of toothpaste.
The store's own laundry(洗衣店)washes or dry-cleans all the clothes found in baggage, and then sells them. Do you need a wedding dress? There are a lot of beautiful lost and unclaimed ones.
The Unclaimed Baggage Center has found guns, illegal drugs-even a live rattlesnake-inside bags. The store has a little museum where some of its most unusual things have been preserved. They even include a burial mask from an Egyptian pharaoh's tomb.

              C. can be got back by the owners at any time
              D. is kept by the airlines for about three months

              A. Because they are not in the warehouse business.
              B. Because there are some illegal items in the baggage.
              C. Because the airlines might wrongly deal with baggage on purpose.
              D. Because the lost baggage belongs to insurance companies.
              (3) It can be inferred from the text that the Unclaimed Baggage Center ______ .
              A. is crowded with passengers looking for their baggage
              B. becomes the largest department store in Alabama
              C. is run by the airlines and insurance companies

I should know.I have been doing this for 20years.Why is it that I need a sign to remind me?
Every other week in my neighborhood we place either recycled bottles or paper out with our garbage. There is a (1) alongside the road that says"This is bin week"or"This is paper week".The schedule is simply changed every other week. But I can never (2) which week is which.Every week,I make a(n) (3) to look for the sign.

Then, yesterday I finally saw the man who (8) the sign.I slowed down and wanted to tell him how much I (9) what he did.I couldn't stop in time (10) I found that the traffic sign said"The Next Exit Is 2km".So I drove as the traffic sign (11)
By the time I got back, the man was gone.I felt so (12) .I should have stopped alongside the road and just said"thank you".I (13) in front of the sign and thought about how many times in my life I looked for a sign to tell me what to do.I was (14) that all too often I missed an (15) because I was looking for a sign.Today I wanted to tell"someone"how (16) I think their efforts are but missed the opportunity.
So,I wrote a (17) and placed it next to the sign.
If you have been (18) to move forward towards a dream, say (19) to someone who lends you a hand,or begin a new project, this may be the sign you've been looking for.
The note (20) ,"This is do it now week."
