When his book Little Princes begins,Conor Grennan is planning a yearlong trip around the globe,a journey that began with a threemonth volunteer service at the Little Princes Children's Home,an orphanage(孤儿院) in Nepal.

It is only during the last few years that man has generally realized that in the world of nature a balance exists (存在 ) between all forms of life.No living thing can exist by itself; it is part of a system in which all forms of life are joined together. If we change one part of the nature order, this will in turn almost certainly bring about changes in some other part.
The cutting down of forests reduces the supply of oxygen. The killing of weeds and insects by chemicals leads to the widespread poisoning (中毒) of animals and birds. The throwing of waste products into the ocean hurts life in the sea, while waste gases change the chemical balance of atmosphere and shut out some of the sun's necessary life-giving rays.
And so we could go on,adding more examples, until in despair (绝望) we might feel like giving up the struggle to control and keep within limits these harmful human activities.Man is very clever at changing the world around him to satisfy his immediate need, but he is not so clever at looking far ahead,or at thinking about what the future results of his action might be.Man may well destroy himself in his attempt (企图) to be too ambitious (野心).

              (1) The examples given in the second paragraph are evidences (证据) that ______ .
              A. it is during the last few years that man has generally known the balance of nature
              B. there are some living things which can exist by themselves without change
              C. all forms of life belong to a system in which all the parts can be changed for another
              D. we cannot change one form of life without destroying the balance of nature
              (2) The last paragraph suggests that,in man's attempt to increase immediate benefits, ______ .
              A. man often fails to think about his future results of his action
              B. man is always too ambitious to planning distant future
              C. man often feels that he will have to give up in despair
              D. man is always anxious to control and keep his activities within limits

              A. Cutting down woods does little harm to human beings.
              B. Man has to pay much attention to the future results of his present action.
              C. Oxygen comes from forests.
              D. This passage tells us to try our best to get as much as possible immediately.
              (4) Which of the following is the best title of this passage? ______

I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The advertisement in the paper said that you could buy tickets at the theatre box in Richland Hill any day between 10:00and 4:00.Since I work from 9:00to 5:30,the only time I could go to the theatre was during my 45-minute lunch break.Unfortunately, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hill is not very good. But if you are lucky you can make the round trip in 45minutes.Last Monday,I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes waiting for the bus.By the time
I saw one come round the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip.So I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again the next day.On Thursday,my luck changed.I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly twenty minutes. When I got there, however,I found a long line of people at the box office.I heard one man said he had been waiting in line for over an hour.Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line,I caught the next bus and headed back across the town.By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi.It was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to hear the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10minutes,but it felt like an hour to me.When I got to the theatre,I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, however,I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.

An only child, a perfectly ordinary little girl in rural Wisconsin, I wanted sisters more than anything. When I turned seven, my parents made a decision that delighted me beyond measure: they chose to adopt children.
It was Christmastime when my two new sisters, aged 6 and 3, arrived from Colombia. When they came, our friends and relatives visited us bringing gifts to welcome them. That evening our guests went home and we were left to ourselves. My sisters and I went to the bedroom we were to share. As we crawled into our beds, our parents came to see each of us, saying goodnight. They whispered(低声地说)to my new sisters,"I love you."
From the beginning these newcomers were like my own flesh and blood. We played and fought and learned just as if we had always been sisters. From the beginning we were all my parents' daughters equally, as they scolded(责备)and encouraged us.
Life seemed great. Beneath the surface, however, my parents were struggling with their own problems. They didn't love each other any more. As we girls were approaching our teen years, my parents made an announcement,"We're getting a divorce."
My sisters had been hurt before. They suffered a lot when their birth mother abandoned(抛弃)them, and none of us understood the depth of their inner pain. It was a pain that now came back.
We all struggled during this time. My father remarried and tried to provide some sort of stability(稳定)for us through this new family: another mother, brother and sister. But the relations between my parents and sisters continued to disintegrate. By the time I left for college, there was profound coldness between the family members.
During my college years, my outlook on life changed a lot. My sisters also began to reconsider their own lives and make changes that eventually brought us together as a family. We daughters now can understand our parents' feelings better. They have succeeded in providing us with a foundation of stable love. My mother and father have again become great sources of encouragement for us three sisters. One of my sisters has recently married, and family gatherings are now occasions of happiness.

To me,life without music would not be exciting.I realize that this is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concert, and listening to the record. But music plays an important part in everyone's life, whether he realizes it or not.Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music.Would the feelings, the moving plot, and the greatest interests,be so exciting or dramatic?I'm not sure about it.
Now,we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning-the kind of music we hear in the concert hall. But if we look at some parts of music more closely,we discover them in our everyday life too-in the rhythm of the sea,the melody of a bird in the woods and so on.So music surely has meaning for everyone,in some way or other. And,of course,it has special meaning for those who have spent all their lives working on playing or writing music.
It is well said,"Through music a child enters into a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body strong."

              D. The development of music
              (2) From the text,we learn that many people______.

You make decisions, year after year, never lasting for more than a few days ending up lost and in the same place you started.Allow me to suggest some tips that may help you stick to your decisions creating long-lasting positive change in your life.
Telling other people about your plan can help in many ways.First,it is always easier to stick to a decision when you have other people supporting you.Your friends are less likely to temp you with whatever it is you are trying to control if they know that you made a decision about it.Telling other people about your decision is also helpful in that it keeps us to the pressure on you to try and stick to you plan of action.
Choose a measurable and specific decision.Instead of deciding to"look better"or"have a better relationship with so and so",choose a more definable decision.Deciding to"eat a vegetable every day"or"go out for coffee once a week with John"is much easier to track and assess than a general decision to"be a better person".
Build a reward system.Connected to the last tip of choosing a measurable and specific decision is that when you do accomplish this specific behavior you decided to do,give yourself small rewards along the process. For example, for every week of healthy eating treat yourself with something special.
Creative visual aids.A colleague of mine decided one year for his New Year's decision to be more frugal. He decided to try and save money by lowering his monthly bills. So he posted a copy of his highest electric bill by his heater so that every time he wanted to raise the temperature he would see the high electric bill reminding him to be more cautious about his energy consumption.

              (1) Many people's decisions can't become reality because ______ .
              A. they don't take them seriously at the beginning
              B. they make them but can't stick to them to the end
              C. they meet much difficulty in the process
              D. they lack support from their families
              (2) Why does the writer advise telling your plan to other people? ______
              A. Because they will offer you support and pressure.

I am an American college student here.I met with Carl Baker and started a conversation with him at the bar. After 30minutes of talking,I found out about his recent hardships and his rent return from the war in Iraq.It seemed that he had been saying the same thing to people for the past year.He was on his way to Albrook shopping center and left his money and his camera in the taxi.He was on R & R (修养与恢复)waiting for his family to meet him here.He showed me the pictures of his wife, kids, and his best friends who died in Iraq.
Since I was a college student with a lot of friends in the army,I felt it was my duty to help him. After a long talk,I then lent him﹩50to live off for the next couple of days.He kept saying that he was going to pay me back as soon as his family got here and how he believed in karma. He explained that meant he would be punished by God in the future if he did not return my money. After a couple of
days,he told me that he needed to go to the neared Air Force base which was in Honduras to get a new passport.Since I was an inexperienced college student,I offered to lend him﹩350for his plane ticket to Honduras.
He assured(向„保证)me again and again,so I had to trust him.He-left for Honduras on October 29and then we spoke on Thursday after he returned.Later,I didn't receive a call from him.As you can tell, this was very difficult for me to write.I feel rather stupid.I understand now I can stop praying (祈祷)for him to get back in touch with me.I want to share this to hopefully prevent him from doing this again. Also,I want to get this off my chest, since I can't tell my parents.
