The following are about modern wonders of the world.
              The Suez Canal
More than 3,000 years ago,a king of Egypt ordered that a river be built to connect the Mediterranean Sea(地中海) and the Red Sea.This kind of man-made river is called a canal. However, ancient Egyptians did not keep this canal in use.As years passed, the sands of the great deserts of Egypt closed the small canal.
In 1859,Egyptian workers began rebuilding the canal. It was opened and named the Suez Canal on November 17th,1869.Though closed several times because of war or political problems, the Suez Canal is still the fastest crossing from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean today, saving shipping companies a great deal of time and money.
              The Channel Tunnel
The great canal connects oceans. The next great wonder connects land.It is called the Channel Tunnel,or"Chunnel",connecting Britain with France. The tunnel is 50kilometers long, built about 45meters below the earth under the English Channel(海峡).
The work began in 1987and it took seven years to finish. The cost was more than 13,000million dollars. The Chunnel opened In 1994.
Today, the Chunnel is very busy.High-speed trains carry cars, trucks and passengers from Britain to France and back again. The trains are famous for their smooth, quiet ride. The money paid for the trip is slowly paying for the huge cost.
              The Three Gorges Dam
The Three Gorges Dam is perhaps the largest construction project on earth. The work began in 1993.The Three Gorges Dam is built to produce power and control China's Yangtze River. The completed dam produces large amounts of electric power.
Completed in 2009,the dam creates a huge lake about 632square kilometers. Some critics say the dam harms the environment and damages historical areas.More than one million people had been resettled before the dam was finished.Chinese government officials say it will lead to increased economic development in cities near the dam,and the terrible
floods caused by the Yangtze have become memories of the past.

              (1) Which of the following took the longest time to build? ______
              A. The Red sea.
              B. The English Channel.
              C. The Chunnel.
              D. The Three Gorges Dam
              (2) What do we know about the effects the Three Gorges Dam has on China? ______
              A. It helps to protect the historical sites.
              B. It saves time for ships to travel upstream.
              C. It reduces the number of flood victims.
              D. It powers an area of 632 square kilometers.

What is the best way to catch someone who is telling a lie?
For a long time, the traditional method of catching liars was to watch their body language. Many people-from parents to police officers depend on this method. But does a person's body tell us the truth?
According to a new study,it is not the case.Researchers in the UK recently found that talking seems to be the best way to smoke out a liar.Their study took place at an airport.
The researchers asked volunteers to pretend they were real passengers and then lie to airport security officers. Some of the officers used conversation methods to question them, while other officers depend on their body language. The officers using the talking method were 20times more likely to catch the liars.
Like many methods, this talking technique has a name.It is called Controlled Cognitive Engagement or CCE for short. Here are four ways of catching a liar.
              ①Use open-ended questions.
These are the opposite of"Yes"and‘"No"questions.Open-ended questions force the person to continue the story of their lies until they are caught in their own web of lies.
              ②Surprise them.
Ask questions they may not think you are going to ask.Ask questions that are surprising or off-topic.This will make it harder for them to keep lying.
③Look for small details that do not make sense.
Ask them details in their stories and look for facts that seem to disagree with each other. But do not let them know you know.Just let them dig themselves deeper into a hole.
④Watch for changes in confidence and speaking styles.
Liars will often change their speaking styles when they are questioned. For example, when they feel in control they may be very talkative. But if they feel they are losing control, they may not talk much at all.

With the Chinese language growing in popularity, the UK government plans to invest(投资) 10million pounds to help more kids learn Mandarin(普通话).Do you think it is necessary for the UK pupils to learn Mandarin? Some people share their opinions online.
Ted(UK):The learning of any language can be valuable and rewarding, but it is not suitable for everyone.Chinese is a difficult language to learn and the UK has a poor reputation for teaching foreign languages. Why should they learn Chinese when most people in the world speak English?
Mark(US):I studied French for 2years in high school and German for 4years in college.I studied Mandarin informally for about 4months before moving to China. Now I speak Mandarin every day as my wife doesn't speak English. But it is far from being fluent.Learning additional languages is a great thing, which offers a different perspective on the world around us.Nowadays,it's almost necessary to be able to speak more than just your native tongue.
George (UK):No,unless they're taught from a very early stage of childhood.Mandarin is so difficult. If China really is going to dominate the world,it'll have to do so by speaking the world's dominant language---English.
Sam (UK):I don't think Chinese will become as widely spoken throughout the world as English. It is too difficult to learn as a second language. To learn Chinese you completely have to devote yourself to learning how to write and read it.If you have to learn it besides other subjects you can't be good at it.But Chinese will become more popular, and that is a good thing.

              (1) What is probably Mark's main motivation(动机)for learning Chinese? ______
              A. Further education
              B. Effective communication
              C. His frequent travel
              D. The official policy
              (2) What does Sam think of learning Chinese? ______
              A. It's necessary.
              B. It's of little use.
              C. It takes too much time.
              D. It's not popular.
              (3) What seems to be the major problem when foreigners try to learn Chinese? ______
              A. Its difficulty as a language
              B. Misunderstanding about China
              C. The great popularity of English
              D. A lack of learning resources.

Marmosets:These little monkeys do everything but give lectures on how to give birth!Devoted dads assist during their babies'birth. They also let Mom get some rest by taking care of the kids when she's not nursing them.
Sand grouse:These pigeon-like birds live in areas where water is rare,so fathers fly as many as 50miles to get water for their kids. After they dip their breast feathers in the water, they fly home and let their chicks suck the water from their bodies.

Arguing with your parents is totally natural for teens. From your hairstyle to your friends,to your marks at school,to your television habits,to your future plans,it might just seem like you argue with your parents about everything. While this is not generally a pleasant state of affairs,it is normal and it will most likely pass.
              Argue fairly
Arguments between teens and parents generally come about when both parties believe that they know what is best for the teens.Parents have been caring for their teens for over a decade, but teens are quickly becoming adults and believe that they are able to take care of themselves. If you must argue with them, argue fairly by:
●allowing each person to speak their mind.
●refusing to interrupt others when they're speaking.
●sticking only to the topic at hand.
              Argue respectfully
No matter how heated things may get during an argument, try to remember that your parents are still worthy of your attention, respect and love.During arguments,be respectful by:
●keeping your voice lowered at all times and refusing to shout.
●staying calm.Avoiding angry actions such as kicking, throwing or hitting anything.
●reasonably explaining the reasons for your opinions.
There is a thin line between a discussion and an argument, but smart teens know that keeping their interactions(互动) with their parents at the discussion level practically guarantees that they will be taken more seriously. No one likes to argue, and the parents can be very tired of it,so keeping things at the discussion level will work to everyone's advantage.
Arguing with parents is practically a sign of the teenaged years, but out-of-control arguments don't serve anyone well. Before arguing with your parents, decide what type of teen you want to be and what compromises you are willing to make in order to achieve your goals.

              (1) This text mainly tells teens ______ .
              A. how to avoid arguing with parents
              B. some tips on arguing with parents
              C. arguing with parents may hurt them
              D. arguments don't solve any problem
              (2) What are the teenagers advised to do when arguing with their parents? ______
              A. Make up your mind not to give in.
              B. Express yourself through actions.
              C. Show your respect for them.
              D. Interrupt them if necessary.
              (3) The author seems to think that teens'arguing with parents is ______ .
              A. natural B. special C. shameful D. impolite
              (4) The text is most likely intended for ______ .
              A. parents B. teenagers C. teachers D. friends.

              PAINT BROTHERS
Brothers Luke and Walker Floyd from Texas went into business together four years ago."Our father gave us the idea of striping(给…划上条纹)parking lots to make money to buy a car,"says Luke,14.They had to buy a machine that rolls along and pumps the paint through a sprayer(喷漆器),which cost﹩1,500.Talking to business owners to see if they wanted their parking lots worked on was hard at the beginning, and the manual labor(体力劳动)can be tough in the awfully hot Texas summers.
"There have been plenty of times I would have rather sat with air conditioning. But once I got out there and got my hands dirty,I had a great time with my brother!I look back on what I accomplished and have learned to appreciate things a lot more,"Walker,17,says.

              "Don't rush into it,"Will says."Buying a machine costs about﹩200,plus﹩130 a year for candy.I collect about﹩10 a week from one machine."
He has plans to expand, but that will have to wait since one of his machines broke.
"I've been successful in making profits over the last two years,"Will says, but getting out to service the machine is hard since he can't drive:He recommends that before you invest(投资)in starting a business, figure out what your costs will be.

When Citi Bike rolled onto the streets of New York,it was treated as a national event and even international media took notice.Even before it,one blog post on Le Monde's website announced,"Bike share to take America."
The next major development was in Copenhagen, which introduced a coin-operated system in 1995called Bycyklen,or"City Bike."For 17 years, these bikes zipped through the streets of Denmark's capital until the program was shut down late last year-it's getting an upgrade to third generation technology.
Sponsored (赞助) by media giant Clear Channel, the French city of Rennes brought the next generation of bike share to the world in 1998 by replacing coin operation with card access and electronic booths (电子亭).From there the technology has progressed, picking up GPS,cellphones, and real-time tracking along the way,and has spread throughout Western Europe-and the world.
However, the worldwide leader in bike sharing,as measured by the number of bikes,is China.According to data collected by the Earth Policy Institute,20 of the 25 largest bike share programs are Chinese.
Take a look at Hangzhou,China, and you'll see what just may be the best bike share in the world.Although now second in China by size, the Hangzhou Public Bicycle system is one of the densest shares, and probably the most extensively used one.Residents and tourists alike can put down a deposit(押金)of 200Chinese Yuan (about﹩33)and ride for an hour for freein this scenic city on the Yangtze Delta. Each additional hour is the equal of only﹩0.15-one reason why riders put in a quarter-million rides a day.By 2020 it's projected to have 175,000 bikes.
Then,in March,2017,many people in cities like Beijing and Shanghai received this kind of cellphone message:Come and ride our bike for free! These messages are part of the battle between two big bike-sharing companies Ofo and Mobike. Both of the companies are trying to attract more users and the competition is still going on.
Nowadays, most of the systems share several characteristics-bikes with low theft value, electronic docking stations, ranked(分级的) payment rates, smart phone operating systems-but different cities are trying different ways to make bike sharing work.Bike sharing is predicted to grow at a very fast pace, opening up to its users a new means of urban transportation.
